drew peterson murder trial. tempers player between lawyers and the judge sends jurors out of the courtroom just moments after opening statements begin. good evening. thanks for staying up with us. >> it is our top story seen around the country tonight on wgn america >> mark and mike for years, we have been leading up to this trial and showing you the defense attorneys for drew peterson, many times cracking jokes outside the courtroom saying things and being very very goes. this time inside the courtroom things were very different. their rhetoric was extremely tone down. mostly because there was a jury there at this time. still court was anything but ordinary. there were probably 25 at least motions, objections to both sides.

there were two rare removals of the jury from the courtroom, one for the prosecution during their opening statements. one during the defense opening statements. there was a call for a mistrial. there were numerous side bars. and this was all the first day of trial. >> good day. it could be worse. >> defense attorneys claiming victory tonight after the first day in the trial of drew peterson. peterson who has been in jail for three years, wore a dark gray suit and tie. a white dress shirt. he was clean shaven but looked tired. he wore his glasses the entire time. >> they don't have any evidence. they are trying to dirty him up. we don't convict people based on dirt. >> james glasgow's opening statement jury was removed from the courtroom. the first of four times. objections flew after glasgow started a statement inferring that drew person tried to hire someone to kill his third wife the defense asked for a mistrial which was denied. the jury was instructed to

strike the partial statement. he went on to paint peterson as a man who killed because he was financially strapped supporting two households since he had a baby with stacy, who would become his fourth wife. he also allegedly didn't want to give up his $300,000 pension. >> a cat and fighter. >> a strong-willed argumentative woman saying she acted lake a mad woman at times and appeared to be supposed at other times. he said she would have put up a big fight if drew peterson was trying to kill her. >> if somebody was trying to kill her you would see that place torn apart, fighting for her life. think how you would be. there would be holes in walls, broken bottles and mirrors. a wreck. >> he's making drew the victim. kathleen is the victim. she's the queen of heaven. >> but there is no dna,

fingerprints or blood other than savios. he said disregard that and to pay closer attention to peterson's actions and reactions. >> the most important thing we saw was the picture of savio, kathleen in the tub and when you take one look at that photo, you know, light bulb goes off in your head she was wedged in the tub and that alone shows you us there no way it was an accident. >> this is the picture she's talking about. kathy naked and dead in her bathtub. the defense downplayed it. >> it is what it is. all of those jurors have been to funerals before. they have seen people who are deceased so i don't think it that prejudicial. >> the prosecution's first witness cried when she saw the picture but mary his close friend and neighbor saw the real thing. she found her friend in that tub on march 1, 2004. >> possible witnesses tomorrow that were supposed to be called

today tom, mary's husband, who was also there the night kathleen's body was found and the locksmith who helped drew get into the house that night. court starts tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. wgn news. >> three people in custody tonight but that is small comfort to a world war ii veteran who says he's now afraid to leave his home. he was walking home when three men brutally attacked him. >> he made it through the last world war. but tonight, 87-year-old porter questions if he can make it safely down his own street anymore. >> this neighborhood is pretty safe, you know. i didn't think nothing like that would happen. >> this is mr. cross yesterday, just moments after being jumped and badly beaten by three young men near 71st and claremont. he was walking home from the corner store.

with police chief tim mccarthy, survivor of the assassination attempt on president reagan. >> i think this law will help law enforcement. it will help reduce violence against our residents. it will help reduce violence against our police. >> it's a mandatory veto of a republican sponsored measure with a much different intent designed to allow easier access to ammunition. instead governor specifically targets rapid firing military-style guns like the ak-47. tak-9 and ar-15. >> we believe in public safety. >> there is an immediate blow-back from the illinois g.o.p. >> it's just a political stunt. >> and the gun lobby calls the governor's effort misguided, claims it targets the wrong people. the executive director of the illinois state rifle association telling wgn news tonight, there are millions of firearms in illinois that would be subject to this.

try swiffer sweeper vac. >> so what were you just saying before we started, warmest summer in -- >> 91 years. you figure this is the last day of july. we're 2/3 into the meteorological summer. you have to go back to 1921 to find a summer this warm. this july will close as the third warmest month, of all the months, that we've had going in chicago in 142 years of records. at the airport, warmest month, where observations started in 1928. what a beautiful day it turned out to be. our mariners are out there. you can see on the time lapse, always fun watching that. that after a morning of showers

and some pretty good thunderstorms in our southern suburbs. the last of those storms are now across the ohio river. and heading southbound. they have spent the day traversing that area. look at them still piled up and towering tens of thus of feet into the atmosphere. but they are moving away from us, and we've got a beautiful start to august on the way tomorrow. the big hot air dome that's anchored u.s. weather much of the summer continues, with these little storm includessters running around it old ring of fire pattern but fortunately there will be no such thunderstorms in our area until a few scattered ones come in and the heat and humidity build back in later in the week and into this weekend. some really hot weather due next week as well. here's where the rain came down in those storms overnight and this morning. you may have been awakened by the thunder and lightning, dramatic lightning displays. we've put up a bunch of pictures on our website. look at park forest with .56 of average of half average of

rockford. manhattan dekalb aurora and lansing all .4 of an inch of rain. the thunderstorms are shown moving away and here's this bubble of high pressure that will bring us a beautiful day as august begins tomorrow. again warmest summer in 91 years we're averaging 6.3 degrees above the long-term average. so we didn't just beat it. we're blowing it away. the summer of 1921 is the only summer in 142 years of weather records with more rain. and now we go into august which historically has been our wettest month. we had about 3.5 inches of rain in july. which was actually pretty close to normal at o'hare. not in other places obviously the drought is terrible across the country. continuing unabated. but the wettest month on record was back in 1987 and that was in august. a rain event, 17.1 inches fell in that month. looking at some august rainfalls in just the last 10 years since 2000.

over 12 inches a foot of rain in a single month in 2001. and last year we had 4 1/2 inches. i wish i could tell you that we saw substantive rains coming but the rain forecasts are truly anemic, just a half an inch indicated over the next seven days. that's less than half average and the temperatures will continue above average, with a surge of heat coming after tomorrow's comfortable upper 80's with low humidity. heat and humidity back on thursday and friday and more heat due into saturday. saturday, you could see mid-90's in the area. so could thursday for that matter. and the heat will resurge next week. the hot air dome has never gone away. it's just shifted south. six states with record highs. 108 at oklahoma city. 90's north of the canadian border and 80's up nearly to the arctic ocean. look at some of the record highs. tulsa oklahoma 111. wichita falls, 110. oklahoma city 108. dallas, 106, and no sign that

heat will break in that area. there are eight states tonight under heat advisories. the advisories that you see on the shoreline, those are for rip currents because of expected north-northeasterly winds tomorrow. and we still have some monsoon rains hitting the deserts of california and nevada. las vegas may see showers and storms tomorrow. we're a little cooler tonight in the wake of that cool front, the air has less moisture cooling off nicely. down to 75. but here's the blazing heat that will begin encroaching over the next couple of days. and we've got to be up -- not far from 90 maybe mid-90's on thursday. wind off the lake could temper the heat a tad in all but the suburbs on friday. not much. the heat will be back in earnest on saturday. scattered clouds. more comfortable humidity levels.

low temperature of 67. winds easing to 4-13. mostly sunny for wednesday. with moderate humidity a high of 89. light winds off the lake will keep the beaches in the mid-80's tomorrow. increasing clouds maybe an isolated shower or thunderstorm. it's looking like many of those will stay north of the wisconsin line. low temperature of 66. on thursday a mixture of sun and clouds. turning hot and more humidra? couple of severe thunderstorms may develop. if you get a downpour 95 with 80's at the beaches. then 92 on friday. 95, and that's right up to and over the beaches on saturday with big storms on a strong cold front saturday night. or early sunday morning. but i think much of saturday may be all right till late in the day when there will be a thunderstorm. if you've got some outdoor plans check back with us but it looks like tomorrow, thursday and friday.
