in the state of illinois and that fund used to pay for the public defender has been eliminated so the defendant has new attorneys ... we are days away from getting the details of what happened when the family went to a family vacation at a downstate water park ... it considerably thinner and clean shaven christopher vaughn greeted potential jurors with a timid " good morning ladies and gentlemen " as he took his place in the courtroom he is accused of killing his three children and his wife he told police early on the morning of june 14, 1920 07 there were on their way to a downstate water park in springfield when he pulled off an access road off of interstate 55 to secure the luggage atop the s u v there were driving ... he claimed his wife shot him

tried to escape and then killed the three children ... but the prosecutors contend that he himself shot his wife and kids wanting a $1 million life insurance policy he took out on his wife is also alleged that he went to a gun range and used the same handgun for target practice that was used in the murder he did that tonight before ... evidence from the fda will be presented by the defense to prove that suicidal behavior is a side effect of some medication that the wife had been taking ... the judge plans to go late into the day today for jury selection the trial will not begin until next monday regardless and it is expected to last up to six weeks ...

chicago's west side communties are on alert after three women morning attacks. two of the three attacks happened in the 2700 block of west jackson in the east garfield park neighborhood last month. the third attack happened near adams and washtenaw on august fifth. the woman in that attack was sexually assaulted and found with her legs and arms bound. police say her attacker wore a mask or rag over his face, dirty white gloves and he threatened the woman with a knife. a man charged with shooting a weapon at a suburban mosque during ramadan services was in court this morning. wgn's amy rutledge is live in skokie with the latest: >>this judge came down hard on david conrad $45,000 bond and electric monitoring device and a stern warning to stay away from the mosque and its members ... the 51 year-old fired a high

powered air rifle with a scope at the community center this friday he narrowly missed two security guards who were guarding the security of the facility during ramadan services ... the man was said to have an ongoing issue with the facility complaining about its expansion vocally at several town meetings ... the man has been a volunteer the village for more than 25 years he now faces four felony counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm and a misdemeanor for not having proper documentation for the weapon ... it is believed to is also responsible for vandalism on the property but it cannot be proved ...

there has been another attack on a muslim institution... this time at a full time islamic school in lombard. a member of the islamic community and the school had a 7-up bottle with acid and other materials thrown at them last night during ramadan prayers. during the prayer, worshippers heard a loud bang and went outside to find an empty bottle thrown on the window of the school. there were no injuries. lombard police are investigating the incident. the sikh temple in oak creek wisconsin held its first service since last week's deadly shooting. hundreds of people from all over the country attended the service yesterday. they took part in a traditional sikh cleansing and rebirth ceremony that is usually held once a year, in april. it capped a week of events meant to honor the six people who were killed, and to restore the temple as a place of worship. president obama is bringing his re-election campaign to iowa

today. he's on a three-day bus tour through the state where polls show he's locked in a close race republican rival mitt romney. the president criticized mitt romney and his new running mate in council bluffs iowa before backing tax cuts to the wealthy: >>they have tried to solis this trickle-down theory before and guess what every time it has been tried it did not work it didn't then it won't know it won't create jobs but will lower the deficit it's not a plan to move the economy forward we don't need more tax cuts for the wealthiest americans we need tax relief for working families! before heading to iowa .... the president spent the weekend home here in chicago .... raising campaign cash. he appeared at five fundraisers across the city ... and collected nearly four million dollars.

after a whirlwind weekend of campaign stops and media interviews... the romney-ryan presidential ticket is splitting up today... to meet voters in separate states. mitt romney continues his four-day battleground state bus tour with two stops in florida. later today... his vice presidential runningmate paul ryan, will attend the iowa state fair. during an interview on "60' minutes" last night... the gop ticket addressed their plans for medicare. >>what paul ryan and i have spoken about a saving medicare making sure there are choices for the future and that it's there for current seniors >>we have to preserve their benefits governor has made program promises to them ... the sacrifices have to be made by those who are younger ... also in that 60 minutes interview -- ryan he would release two years of personal tax returns to the public... the same number that romney did. democrats and some republicans have called on romney to release more returns.

the vatican says pope benedict's butler will face charges for leaking hundreds of the pope's secret papers. the private documents were taken from the pope's personal apartment and given to an italian journalist. that reporter then put the documents in a best-selling book called "his holiness." butler paolo gabriele will be charged with aggravated theft. a second man, a vatican computer expert, will be charged with aiding the butler. video is being released from inside a city bus... which captures the terrifying moments when the bus rolled over. 16 people were injured last week when a mass transit bus crashed in kansas city, missouri. one passenger who was sitting behind the bus driver says a car bolted out of a nearby gas station and cut off the bus. everyone is expected to recover. >>she veered off to the right

and she clipped the back of one car and then the bus went rolling downhill ... investigators say the bus met all safety requirements. no word yet on whether any charges will be filed. the house oversight committee is expected to file a civil contempt lawsuit against attorney general eric holder today. the panel wants holder to release documents linked to the "fast and furious" weapons tracking program. the house passed a contempt of congress citation last month. republicans accuse holder of stonewalling the investigation by not releasing the documents.. while democrats say the citation was politically motivated. the justice department said it would not prosecute holder, after president obama asserted executive privilege. the death toll in iran has risen to more than 300 from saturday's twin earthquakes. the news comes just one day after rescue workers called off the seacrh for survivors more than 3,000 people were injured following the quakes in northwest iran. the quakes struck near tabriz, iran's fourth largest city. more than 100 villages were damaged.

profitability they have a chance to put themselves into the black ... we have seen a rally in stock prices but no stocks are trading lower at the new york stock exchange ... while gas prices are on the rise nationwide--- chicago is getting hit the hardest. gas prices jumped 18 cents over the past two weeks--- the biggest jump of the year. here in chicago the price for a gallon of gas is highest in the city at $4.40 a gallon. the national average is $3.69... nearly 8 cents higher than a year ago. analysts say closed refineries and the drought are to blame-- which has pushed up the price of corn used to make ethanol found in gas.

private security guards shot and killed a teenager in south suburban richton park. it happened saturday night in lioncrest townhomes subdivision. the guards on duty confronted a car with two people inside after the guards saw them firing gunshots into the air. that's when one of the men... sean smith of chicago heights-- pointed and shot a handgun at the guards. the guards shot back and hit smith. he was pronounced dead at the scene. another person was hurt in the shooting. cook county police are investigating. a man and a teenage boy were each charged in connection to a deadly shooting inside a harvey sports bar. 30-year-old kevin gyce was killed early saturday morning after a fight broke out in the press box club. police say 16-year-old matthew smith was the one who shot gyce he's charged with first-degree murder. 24-year-old arsenio williams is charged with trying to help smith hide the murder. it's unclear what started the fight.

for the second year in a row an accident at the indiana state fair sent people to the hospital. five people were injured when a stage coach tipped over during a turn, at the pepsi coliseum yesterday. the state fair queen was thrown to the ground. four others were inside the coach, but none of the injuries are life threatening. no word yet on what caused the accident. this accident happened one year after the stage collapse that killed seven people at last year's state fair. hundreds of thousands of products containing apples are being recalled because of possible contamination. ready pac foods is recalling apples shipped to illinois and 35 other states because of potential listeria contamination. the bacteria was found on equipment used by the company's "missa bay" unit. no illnesses have been reported. the apples are sold as slices in fast food restaurants. oak brook-based mcdonald's has

stopped serving apple products from the "missa bay" facility and removed them from all restaurants and distribution centers. the mars rover - curiosity - is getting a brain transplant. that announcment comes from nasa which said engineers are updating curiosity's software. the improvment will allow curiosity to use the geo- chemistry lab sampling system and to move about more easily. scientists had to wait until after curiosity made it through the harsh environment of space. the initial processor was built years ago and is limited compared with today's technology. another rollover for the "powerball jackpot" means wednesday's drawing is now worth 305-million dollars. no one matched all six numbers in saturday's multi-state lottery drawing. however... tickets worth one- million dollars each were sold in florida, north carolina, pennsylvania and new jersey. no one has won big in powerball since june 23rd.

time for sports: first place in the central thanks to career- years from a.j. pierzynski and chris sale. sale struck out eleven oakland a's and walked no one yesterday. it was tied at one in the sixth inning, when pierzynski hit his 23rd home run of the year, to make it 3-1 sox. in the next inning... alexei ramirez hit a ground ball, but the third baseman and shortstop collided... pierzynski advanced the third... and then went on to score since no one covered home plate. sox won 7-3, and now lead detroit by two games. the sox visit toronto tonight. the cubs closed out a series against the 1st place reds at wrigley. there was no score in the fifth when jay bruce hit a two- run homer... rookie pitcher brooks raley gave up three runs in his second start. the cubs struggled at the plate and managed only four hits in the game. they lost 3-0, and dropped 3 of 4 games to cincinnati. it's the fourth time the cubs have been shut out in two weeks.
