tomorrow marks the 200th anniversary of the battle of fort dearborn a deadly hand-to- hand fight between two of the groups trying to lay claim of chicago during the war of 1812 but some distinguished historians are asking us to use the bicentennial to rethink that important story of how chicago was born. a lot of people don't even realize there was a port here before there was chicago and it was so important to the settlement of this area. if you stand on any corner of michigan and whack produce stand near dearborn a small military post on an island where the chicago river mets like michigan.

imbedded here are run strips into they outlined the footprints of the court and there are other reminders of fort dearborn, a skyscraper entrance and sculptures on all four bridge houses. all of these events occurred somewhere and when you look at where they happened you lookyou connect with history. she has just released this book rising up from indian country the battle at fort dearborn. there were numerous warnings of an imminent attack. the battle

took place here in what is now roughly 18th street in the shadow of soldier field. 52 of 95 people died including 15 native americans, survivors were taken prisoner and the next day they burned fort dearborn to the ground. they were winning the battle but losing the war. despite the win the war really brings about a change that we are moving away from indian country and into an american era. when americans killed, it's a battle, when indians killed it's a massacre. she said it was also a way of rallying americans into court. i don't think it's
