many spent the night outside the area ... this is the president's order allowing undocumented immigrant children to apply for special permits to go to school and work in this country republicans have opposed this measure saying it's politically motivated and encourages people to violate immigration law ... but the administration said it was the humane thing to do allowing these children through no fault of their own to come out of the shadows and participate in society here ... nearly 75,000 will be eligible here in illinois ... >>i'm always skeptical there's always that thought in the back of your mind what from not accept it or am i going to be denied ... >>you want to share this american dream with everyone ...

some anxious moments this morning but the defense ultimately decided to change its strategy ... instead of a motion for mistrial they asked the judge to ban all hearsay testimony thinking it's an appropriate punishment for the prosecution who for the third time defied the judge's order ... >>the misstep came while a retired bolingbrook police lt. recalled an incident on the witness stand when she said she was called to the kathleen savio home kathleen savio said that drew peterson threatened to kill her arriving at her home dressed in a swat uniform with a knife to her throat when she was asked if kathleen savio said she wanted in order of protection it was a direct violation of the order that the judge had given in not mentioning that order protection in the trial ... but the defense overnight had a

change of heart after the judge's recess before the judge could rule the czech defense withdrew the motion and the judge was requested to bar all further hearsay testimony ... when the judge asked drew peterson if he understood that under appeal he was waiving this ... he said that he did and the judge barreddenied the motion ... the cross-examination will resume that the judge has instructed the jurors to disregard any mention of that protective order mentioned in the witness' testimony our legal analyst terry sullivan

thinks that the decision by drew peterson legal team to withdraw the request for mistrial could hurt peterson on appeal >>if he gets convicted and it goes to appeal it is going to be o.k. there should of been a mistrial granted and what happened is he waved it and the appellate court will recognize that ... the drew peterson trial tonight on cltv. join lourdes duarte at 7:00 this evening, as the experts breakyou can also call in with your questions. a jury has been seated for another will county murder case -- in the courtroom next to drew peterson's trial. christopher vaughn is charged and the couple's three children, five years ago. starting a vacation when vaughn pulled his car onto a frontage road near channahon, and killed everyone. vaughn claims his wife did the shooting, as part of a murder- suicide. the judge set a hearing for tomorrow to discuss a cryptic poem written by vaughn that prosecutors want jurors to hear. opening statements in the trial are set for next monday.

a mchenry county sheriffs task force to protect children, now faces charges of producing child pornography and distributing it on the internet. this is the second time 36 year old gregory pyle has been arrested. in january, he was placed on administrative leave, after he was accused of sexually assaulting a boy. pyle worked for the sheriff's office for more than ten years. he is being held without bond until a detention hearing friday. if convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison. 50's is the first person in dupage county to be infected with west nile virus this year. west nile virus is spread by mosquitoes.. and the dupage county health department says the weather this year is very conducive to the type of mosquitoes thart carry the virus. about one in five people infected with west nile virus develop symptoms that include fever, headache, body aches vomiting. at least 6 west nile cases have been reported in cook county this year.

federal prosecutors want chicago alderman ed burke to turn over records of a program that pays disabled city workers. a grand jury has issued subpoenas to the city council finance committee which is chaired by burke. last year alone ... the committee paid out 115 million dollars in so-called duty disablility. mayor emanuel has said cutting out waste and fraud in worker's compensation could save the city at least 15 million dollars in next year's budget. burke's commmittee recently turned down a request by city inspector general joe ferguson for its disability records. but a committee spokesman says burke is complying with the subpoena. illinois lawmakers are set to return to springfield friday for another chance at trying to solve the state's pension problems. governor quinn called legislators back for a one-day special session to address the state's 83-billion dollar pension debt. that debt is growing by about

bomb exploded in the syrian capital of damascus just outside a hotel where u.n. observers are staying. at least three people were wounded. the bomb was attached to a fuel truck which exploded in a parking lot near the hotel. no members of the u.n. staff were injured. the rebel "free syrian army" claimed responsiblity... saying the attack targeted a military headquarters near the hotel. the rebels said it's a warning to president bashar al-assad that they could strike anytime at the heart of his regime. more than ten wildfires have scorched nearly 500,000 acres so far across california, oregon, idaho, and washington state. in washington, one of the fires has destroyed at least 60 homes and forced hundreds of families to evacuate. a state of emergency is in effect in two counties. officials believe the wildfires will grow even worse... because weather forecasts call for strong winds and no rain in the coming weeks. wildfires have charred roughly six million acres across the country this year. jerry sandusky is reportedly working on another book while he waits to be sentenced. the former penn state assistant football coach wrote a memoir called, "touched" in 2001. cnn affiliate wjac has learned sandusky is working on a second book. he was convicted of 45 child sex abuse charges in june.

prison officials say he is no longer on suicide watch and spends his time quietly in his cell. if he does publish a book, as a convicted felon, sandusky will not be allowed to profit by writing about his crimes. critics say he played the race card ... but vice president joe biden is not apologizing. biden was in virginia yesterday .. addressing a group which included many african-americans. he attacked republican presidential candidate mitt romney's support for lifting banking regulations imposed during the financial crisis. >>he said in the first hundred days he is going to let the big banks write their own rules " unchain " wells street ... they're going to put you all back in chains ... biden later pointed out that vice presidential hopeful paul ryan and house speaker john boehner have used the work "unshackle" in talking about the economy. unshackled the economy .. they put the middle class in shackles. mitt romney's campaign hit back at the obama camp for biden's

remarks .. calling it a new low in the race. romney himself took it a step further. he said obama's campaign has made wild and reckless accusations that disgrace the office of the presidency. at a campaign stop in ohio ... romney said ... quote .. "mr. president, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to chicago." an obama spokesman called it "faux outrage" ... pointing out that romney has often accused obama of being "unamerican." former wisconsin governor tommy thompson takes another step towards representing his state once again. he won the republican primary in the race for the u.s. senate yesterday. he defeated three other candidates with 35 percent of the vote. he'll take on democrat tammy baldwin in the general election in november. the 70-year old thompson was also the secretary of health and human services during part of the george w. bush administration. and after outspending her opponent by almost ten times linda mcmahon beats former congressman christopher shays in the g.o.p. primary for the u.s. senate in connecticut. mcmahon shelled-out 11 million dollars, while shays only spent about one million. she'll square-off next against

a towing mishap caused two private planes to crash into each other at nashville international airport. a gulf-stream jet was being towed on a ramp yesterday, when it broke loose and rolled into a parked twin-engine plane lifting that plane off the ground. no one was on board either plane, and no one was hurt. the faa is investigating. a little known airline rule is causing controversy... it involves men and children traveling alone. some men complain they're being wrongfully profiled... just because they are male. a firefighter from australia says he was on a virgin airlines flight, sitting next to two young boys, who were unaccompanied by adults, when he was asked to switch seats with a female passenger. >>it was very interesting and embarrassing as though i had done something wrong ... the majority of sex offenders are male so by doing this we are lowering risks ... a man sued british airways for sex discriminaition, and won for moving him away from unaccompanied minors. u.s. airlines have no set rules... it's up to each individual carrier. virgin airlines says it has been a long standing policy, based on customer feedback but, company

officials are now reviewing it. it's now safe to drink the water in sauk village. the illinois epa made the announcement yesterday tests show no more vinyl chloride in the finished, public water supply. the agency credits temporary filters for making sauk village's water supply safer. state attorney general lisa madigan's office is expected to tell village leaders .. they do not have to provide residents free bottled water. last month, the epa found vinyl chloride in sauk village's water supply. the lollapalooza clean-up began yesterday... and officials expect the cost to be much less than last year. concert promoter, c-3 presents, estimates the cost of clean-up to be about $150,000., compared with the one million dollar cost last year. the chicago park district will oversee the repairs... which are expected to go on for the next seven to ten days. the three-day music festival attracted about 300-thousand attendees to grant park. tonight's "powerball" jackpot is up to $320-million . no one matched all six numbers

"triclosan" is found in some soaps, deoderants, mouth washes toothpaste, trash bags and other producrts. most hand sanitizers do *not* contain "triclosan". about four million "bumbo baby seats" are being voluntarily recalled after injuries to babies. in the last five years, at least 50 incidents have been reported in which babies fell while the molded foam seat was on a raised surface. 19 of those babies had skull fractures. another 34 reports have been

it should be a nice weekend we have the air and water show coming this weekend 82 is the current temperature here in chicago let's take a look at the cooling happening out west and the dakotas and in montana that canadian pressure system is cooling things down ... temperatures are down 34 degrees in parts of montana and that is that front that is coming into the area here tomorrow that can grow up some pretty good thunderstorms temperatures wilco way into the 80s today low 80s tomorrow bringing thunderstorms and here are the low temperatures for tomorrow night ... friday we will recover into the '70s ...
