indiana, where three crashes occurred killing one person and causing major back up throughout much of the day. good evening everyone i am karen jordan. i am -- i am robert jordan, and i am jackie bange. >> within a matter of minutes there were three separate crashes involving 20 vehicles this morning. richard swan, 69 years old of frankfurt, indiana us was killed. people say visibility was less than 30 feet, a combination of fog and smoke from a dairy barton fire blowing over the highway. the accident started happening in the northbound and southbound lanes in indiana. a truck rear ended another semi, causing a chain reaction crash.

skycam 9 was over the scene. 12 vehicles totalinvolved. a man riding in the back of one of the cars was pronounced dead. a woman in that car was airlifted in serious condition. police worked to clear the roadway. part of the interstate was backed up for hours . julio was caught in it. >> we came to a complete stop. there was a cloud of smoke in the air about two miles ahead of us and it stopped traffic. two semis crossed a car. they have to pull that semi-out before we can move. >> another crash involved six involves, a car trying to cut around a semi slammed into another car starting a chain reaction. three people were hospitalized with injuries not considered life threaten. a third crash involved two

vehicles. it took nearly eight hours before all lanes were finally back open to traffic. >> this is really a disaster for people who were stranded for hours inside their cars. a driver we spoke with said the situation was made better for him because of the kindness of a cook county sheriff's deputy who happened to be on i-65 and took charge, escorting people to a coach bus so they could use the bathroom and rounding up bottles of water for people who needed it. >> thank you. a crash along lakeshore drive claimed the life of a 6-year-old boy and his mother. three other people were injured. just after 6:00 the woman lost control of her car and drifted across the median into oncoming traffic. she and her son were pronounced dead at the scene. >> a search is underway in chicago for a driver involved in a deadly predawn hit-and-run. just before 5:30 this morning,

police say a woman was driving north on holman in the lawnle dale neighborhood. another driver in a monte carlo ignored the red light and smashed do her car. the driver of the monte carlo ran away, leaving an injured passenger in the car. police say that passenger is not cooperating. chicago police shot and wounded a man after he reportedly caught mayhem in the loop. the man driving a black nissan max ma rear ended a car heading south on lasalle. the man reportedly tried to attack the driver of the car he had truck. a private security officer stopped to check on the extent, and the man standpointed her. when the police sergeant got to the scene and ordered the man to drop the knife, he refused

and was shot. >> the two lady were trapped in the car. he kept swinging the knife like that. he warned him at least two or three times and he reached for a gun. and when he reached for a gun, he shot him. >> the suspect was shot in the leg and was taken to the hospital. the security guard who was stabbed was also hospitalized. >> an autopsy today determined the death of a three-week old baby girl in englewood was a homicide. they say she died of suffocation. child welfare authorities are investigating the allegations of abuse against the baby's 14-year-old mother and grandmother. according to police they were called to the home on wednesday after the baby's mother was reported missing. but the family refused to allow them inside, and police say the baby was held inside with her mouth covered to silence her crying. a morning shooting in the state

university campus left a student as wounded. the wounds are non-life threatening, a confrontation at a gathering led to that shooting at 3:00 in the morning. the suspect is not considered an imminent threat. >> if you were anywhere near chicago's lake front today, you heard it, saw it and probably could not miss it. a million people are expected to turn out for the 54 annual air and water show this weekend. greg schiano was -- shawn lewis was all there. >> yeah, right there! >> along the lake front as far as you could see the crowd came ready for the air and water show. >> beautiful day to be out here. >> i love it. i have a fascination with aircraft, the navy and the military. >> feels wonderful. i can feel the vibrations in my chest.

>> cardinal francis george was unable to attend a service today due to the fact that he again is battling cancer. but he was on the mind of many. >> a day after he publicly announced that his cancered returned france cardinal george missed mass. but his presence was truly missed. bishop joseph perry led the mass and prayer breakfast that george was scheduled to celebrate but didn't because of his recent diagnosis. however, in george's absence, many prayers were offered and well wished extended. >> i am keeping him in my prayers, and i am sure every parish in the archibald archibald will be doing that. >> they look for the cardinal for instance operation and now they hope he will lean on them. >> cardinal we miss your

>> the public library in robbins is open once again now that the air conditioning system has been replaced after being vandalized last month. in early july, vandals climbed on to the roof of the building, pried open the air conditioner and stripped it of its metal parts. the heat that followed forced officials to close the building for three weeks. the dykstra company and 3 m came to the rescue, donating an installing a new cooling unit. >> just every day people coming to our rescue. there is more good in our world than bad. it was awesome and amazing that two companies stepped forward and replaced both of our units. >> the new air conditioning unit is wired with an alarm to alert officials of any theft or

vandalism in the fusme. >> a chicago soldier and mom is catching up with the family tonight. they staged a surprise welcome back for airman annette lugabello. she was deployed in afghanistan and a new mom. her daughter was eight months old when she was depoiped. >> complications of west nile virus have claimed the life of william bill muller. he had been briefly diagnosed with blood cancer and in the hospital since august 5. he was in his fifth term as president of lombard. he was the suburb's longest serving president. he is survived by his wife and two daughters. funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. trading bashes over medicare plans.

yesterday left at least a dozen people dead and 22 injured. it happened in the tate of durango when the bus veered off the road and crashed into a deep ravine. the area is nope as the did have i will's -- devil's spine. among the facilities were eight women and four men. the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. authorities are investigating what may have led to the crash. >> england's paris william saved a 16-year-old girl from drowning. he was at the controls of an r.a.f. helicopter as the pilot of a search and rescue operation. the r.a.f. praised the operation as one of its fastest and shortest. the prince's team took only 38 second to reach the scene.

normal is 82. it looks like tomorrow will be just about as nice as today was, but we do have a complicating factor. look at that. time laps pictures showing some of the con trails from the air and water show. what a day it was to see that. tomorrow we have a little issue that is worth considering and that is a cold front that is going to come through and perhaps produce a passing shower or thunderstorm. we are not expecting it to be severe. there it is. 77 degrees. cool air continues to hug the midwest tightly. but with time some of that warm air out west is going to make its way into chicago. it could be that by this time next week we could see temperatures in the mid 80's. relatively come for this time of year but not quite as comfortable as today. see the warm air building, and notice what happens. this is monday showing the cool air hanging around. beyond that the warm air begins to advance and then we will be

back in the heat a few days. it looks like friday will be the warmer day with a high of 87 in the forecast. look at the temperatures tonight across the area. 70 at o'hare airport. there is a bit of a lake breeze and that is warm water in like michigan. the water temperature is at 75, so that is helping to moderate the temperature along the shore. due points in the 40's and 50's. we will probably have low temperatures away from lake michigan in the low 50's by morning. this is the wind picture. notice a few spots reporting no wind at all. in other places, wind saint petersburg are generally less than 10 miles an hour. a lot of action east of the mississippi. look at the gulf coast. a lot of rain and thunderstorms. we had some storms in iowa and missouri but that is drifts

away from us. we are watching more closely these storms associated with that cold front that will drop through winfield. early afternoon programs the skies will be clouty and it is possible a storm could develop. these were active storms in northeastern tax. a number of reports of strong winds and hail. this is a hurricane, hurricane gordon sitting out in the middle of the atlantic. not to worry. it is moving east at 21 miles an hour. it is a category ii, maximum wind at 110 miles an hour. we show the storms expected tomorrow afternoon. this is less than impressive, but we will have to keep a watch on it. there could be some lightning involved. slight chance monday, but then tuesday and wednesday should be a couple of nice days. here is our forecast for tonight. skies across the area mostly clear, but there will be a few
