the judge in the drew peterson murder trial will allow testimony... from a man who claims peterson offered him money to hire a hitman to kill kathleen savio. good afternoon. i am steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. at one point this morning the jury heard testimony from one minute before there were asked to leave the courtroom again ... wgn's tonya francisco is live in joliet with our top story: dr. mary kay's a narrow and forensic pathologist was on the witness stand testifying the prosecution asked her how she reached her conclusions that she was going to announce in front of the jury that day she said she used some of the analysis

from doctors not listed on the witness list reach conclusions about the death of kathleen savio ... the judge looked up case lot and said he would instruct the jury not to pay attention to any of those doctors' names that dr. case mentioned and the testimony resumed it was only for 20 minutes and the jury has taken a break for lunch ... this is par for the course with this case lots of breaks lots of jurors having to leave the court room ... before court today we asked the defense attorney joel brodsky to give us his assessment of how things are going: >>earlier i said they haven't laid a glove on us ... after what we heard today they got a few jabs in but they did not hit us hard ...

attacks on a u.s. military base in afghanistan... damaging a top army general's plane. the attack happened at the bagram air field outside kabul last night. a rocket damaged general martin dempsey's plane, but he wasn't near the aircraft at the time. he's the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. two maintenance workers were slightly injured in the assault. dempsey left afghanistan this morning on a different plane. two people are dead after a train hauling coal derailed and fell from a bridge outside of baltimore last night. 21 of the csx train's 80 cars flipped over around midnight, crushing vehicles in a parking lot below. a 19-year old man and women were employees and its not clear why they were on the rail bridge. cranes will work today to remove train cars from the vehicles so they can be searched for other potential victims. the cause of the crash is still unknown. ... u.s. senate candidate tied a canodd aiken has a 5:00 deadline tonight to withdraw from the

in medical watch... reassuring news to women with dense breast tissue. doctors have long known women with dense breasts are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. but new research shows their risk of dying from the disease is not higher than other patients. researchers say it shows they have a lot to learn about dense breast tissue and its implications for screening diagnosis and treatment. difficult for radiologists to detect tumors in mammograms. the study was published in the "journal of the national cancer institute." with suicide rates for american soldiers at an all-time high... the army is hoping a new nasal spray can help. a professor at the university of indiana has been approved to research whether a nasal spray can safely deliver the anti- depressant, thyrotropin , directly to the brain. t-r-h is a naturally-occuring chemical that has trouble reaching the brain through pills or injection. military officials hope t-r-h can help curb suicidal thoughts. in july... there were 38 confirmed or suspected army suicides... and at least 120 so far this year.
