family and friends today attend the funeral of volleyball star megan boken who was killed in saint louis. and there are new developments at this hour in the case. good afternoon. i am steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. our sister station ktvi in missouri is reporting: detectives are questioning an 18 year old man. he was arrested in another robbery case. but police are also asking him questions about megan boken's murder. back in illinois her family is saying goodbye. wgn's julian crews is live in wheaton with more.

was thrown-out from the courtroom. he was kicked-out for making direct eye contact with peterson... and mouthing an explitive. ruby also took out ads in the newspapers attacking the defense, the defendant, and the judge... and calling this trial 'shameless.' also at the courthouse in joliet... the christopher vaughn murder trial. on the stand today: more channahon and state police officers who responded to the murder scene. vaughn is accused of shooting to death his wife and three kids in the family vehicle in june 2007. but, he claims his *wife shot him and the children, then took her own life. during testimony yesterday a paramedic and a sheriff's deputy stated at the time of the crime, vaughn didn't say much about his family. but, he did perk up to complain about blood on his jacket and boots. a woman from kane county is missing... and she may have been last seen in chicago.

her name is tanner conroyd and she's 20 years-old. on sunday, she got into an argument with family members and stormed out of her house. her father thought she was heading to illinois state university in normal, where she planned to attend the fall semester. but, she never made it to campus. a security guard at millennium park says she spoke to him around 10:30 that night. she was also spotted at the park on monday. if you have any information call police. chicago public schools officials and teachers' union reps.. set to meet today but apparently not close to reaching a new contract deal. wgn's nancy loo has the latest as a possible strike looms. these two sides have had 15 negotiation sessions and know it's crunch time people are hoping for significant progress here today ahead of this union teachers are staging informational protests at dozens of schools throughout the city today at one elementary school

this morning i was told that these folks are very comfortable with the delegate vote last night to give karen lewis sole authority to authorize a strike at your discretion that leverage could weigh on the school board to just approved a $25 million contingency plan to deal with the strike both sides agree on a longer school day but they remain far apart on the contract with regard to pay raises and health care ... the first of school is september 4th further negotiations could thwart the district's first strike and a quarter of this century ... we have several days to get this negotiated income to an agreement talks are ongoing both sides are hopeful about a new agreement both sides are preparing for a

political pressure to step todd akin today says voters are rallying behind him. the republican announced today his campaign raised 100-thousand dollars over the past two days. akin says... "over the past 48 hours, i have apologized been attacked by the party bosses, yet through it all, voters have rallied behind me." akin caused national controversy when he suggested that a woman's body has the ability to prevent pregnancy when she's been raped. his opponent for the missouri senate seat says she is sure the issue will come up during their debates. >>what i want to do is make sure this is a window into the mind of todd.aiken i want to make sure people take a close look

it's not just this issue the morning after this man was nominated said that women who were raped should not even be allowed to take the morning after pill ... akin is in tampa florida today... but insists he is not in town to attend the republican national convention which starts on monday. he says he'll honor party leaders wishes that he not attend. a republican lawmaker who's sparked plenty of controversy himself... says todd akin deserves better treatment. illinois congressman joe walsh says republicans are rushing to judgment, and they need to let akin decide his own course. meantime, two new polls show akin still holding a narrow lead mccaskill. ann romney is scheduled to speak at the g.o.p. convention monday night... but her speech may be rescheduled. the major networks are limiting coverage of the convention... and won't be airing coverage on monday night. romney campaign staffers are angry over the decision. they had hoped to use ann romney's speech to show voters a different side of her husband and presidential nominee mitt romney.

the networks have a similar plan to limit coverage during the democratic convention in september. tropical storm isaac is moving through the caribbean and continues to threaten the republican national convention. the storm is building strength and could become a hurricane by the time it reaches haiti. that could have devastating implications for that nation which is still recovering from a devastating 2010 earthquake. meanwhile.. rnc officials are making contingency plans with their convention set to start in tampa next monday. an internet outage and hurricane threat led to the cancellation of a pre-trial hearing for a group of september 11th terrorism suspects. a pentagon official announced all court events at the u.s. military base at guantanamo bay cuba were cancelled as tropical storm isaac continued to grow in the atlantic. the hearing was initially postponed following aa fatal train derailment near baltimore that cut off internet service to guantanamo. the start of the actual trial for the five men accused of staging the attack is likely still a year away. the first eyewitness account of

the navy seal raid that killed osama bin laden is coming to a book store on september 11th. the book entitled "no easy day: the firsthand account of the mission that killed osama bin laden" was written by a navy seal team six member using the pen name, mark owen. the author is no longer on active duty. u.s. special operations command has not reviewed or approved the book. they would like to see a copy though, to make sure no classified information is released. next: troubling news about the dollar after new jobless numbers are reported. and still to come this midday: just in time for football season the world's largest high-def t.v. debuts. and later in lunchbreak: a zesty taco made with a summer garden staple.

bp's whiting, indiana refinery were recalled earlier this week. customers who have suffered engine damage because of the fuel can file a claim with bp to get reimbursed. in a cost cutting move- northwestern memorial hospital has laid off more than 200 employees. officials say they've cut 230 jobs in the last month. they're looking to reduce costs by 25-percent over the next five years. some workers have already found new jobs, or are being considered for vacant positions at northwestern. the lay-offs and cutbacks are being blamed on fewer patients and upcoming cuts to medicare and madicaid. shirt bus cancellations and "painful but necessary" changes are coming to the cta. 26 cta bus routes will be discontinued for four months in an effort to implement changes that will reduce crowding. the goal is to reduce time between buses and decrease crowding by ten to 15 percent during peak times. under the new plan, service will be added on 48 bus routes... and rail trips will be added during the week to some of the busiest train routes. all changes would go into effect on december 16th.

the city has declared war on rats.streets and sanitation workers are being taken off disability to join crews already assigned to putting out rat poison. this year, the number of citizen complains has increased 28-percent. the city's logan square neighborhood has seen the most cases, with city workers called in to put out rat poison. this year's mild winter did nothing to help control the rat population.. usually during cold weather, the rat population decreases because they can't find food. a young child falls off a motorcyle into traffic but thankfully avoids serious injury. and still to come it's been three months since she contracted a flesh-eating bacteria... we have a health update on graduate student aimee copeland.

after exposure... and symptoms include fever, headache and body aches. 20-years ago today tammy zywicki's car broke down on an illinois highway... and she was never seen alive again. zywicki was on her way to college in iowa. her body was later found in missouri... she had been raped and stabbed. she was last seen talking to a trucker next to her broken down car on i-80, near utica, illinois. her killer has never been found... and the fbi says the case remains active. investigators believe someone knows what happened to zywicki... who would have been 41 years old. a parole board in new york issued it's ruling today against mark david chapman. he shot lennon outside his new york apartment in 1980... and was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. the three member board called chapman's actions a heinous unprovoked and calculated crime. chapman can try again for parole in two years.

penn state's ousted president is out defending himself.. saying he had no idea former football coach jerry sandusky was sexually abusing kids. graham spanier sat down for an interveiw with the new yorker magazine. two former university administrators are accused of lying to a grand jury and failing to report the abuse. spanier has not been charged and says he feels for sandusky's victims. >>there are times when i am in a mood of substantial grief about what happened to those kids ... but i never ever heard anything about child sexual abuse ... a penn state review claims spanier took part in a coverup to spare the university bad publicity. spanier denies that claim. flames are raging in northern california as governor jerry brown declares a state of emergency in areas affected by the wildfires. a state of emergency has been declared in three california counties. the "ponderosa fire" seen here is just one of many burning through the western half of the u.s..

the massive blaze sends hazy clouds of smoke through the air impairing visibility. some areas are under mandatory evacuation orders. officials say at least 50 buildings have been scorched in the past week. no one thought much about a bundle of balloons in a tree, until they saw what it was attached to. someone taped the balloons to a little box turtle in southern california and set them flying. the balloons got stuck in a tree and left the turtle stranded. the wind eventually blew the balloons to the ground. fortunately, the turtle was not injured and was taken to the humane society. animal activists are outraged by the prank... investigators will continue to search for the person responsible. if caught, they could face animal cruelty charges. a warning: this next video could be disturbing to some viewers. a little girl in china narrowly escaped being crushed by a car. it happened last weekend... after she fell off a motorcycle while stopped at a traffic light. the driver of the motorcycle

swerved between several cars to get to the front. that's how the girl fell off. she may have hit her head on the tire of another car, but she managed to walk away with only a few scrapes and bruises. if you look carefully, you'll notice another child on the back of the motorcycle. three months after a nightmare encounter with flesh- eating bacteria, aimee copeland is back home. copeland is a graduate student from georgia. she contracted the bacteria from river water, after she cut herself on a homemade zip-line ride. her hands, leg and foot had to last night, she was released from the hospital. she's back at home, in a new wing that's equipped with an elevator, access ramps a sunroom, a fitness room and three outdoor areas.. where copeland can continue her recovery. still to come this midday: tom skilling has your full forecast.

the rain fall ... we're also looking at tropical storm isaac ... that could bring us some heat later next week ... the center of that storm goes across haiti and the dominican republic hurricane's to not like interaction with land ... the storm will track west of florida heading toward the gulf of mexico ...
