he's waiting to learn more details from his doctors and, just as he did with first bout with cancer, he's leaning heavily on prayer. we all live with the lord and if this is a call to be with him till eternity, it's a welcome call in that sense. but it's also a fearful call because there's so much that's unknown. francis cardinal george facing the unknown. after a biopsy, doctors found cancerous cells in his kidney and liver. and, his spiritual retreat - this week - was interrupted by further testing. it's been 6 years since he battled bladder cancer... he thought he had won. his bladder was removed. checkups were good. doctors said the cancer was cured. but, now this - i felt i had nixed something and i didn't. so, that isn't a good feeling.

cardinal george made his first public appearance since the diagnosis at the drury lane in oakbrook terrace, for the annual hispanic ministry awards banquet celebrating his 15th anniversary as archbishop of chicago. earlier this year, he submitted a letter of resignation - something bishops are required to do when they turn 75. he was expected to stay on the job for a few more years but this latest health setback could change his timetable for retirement. in the meantime, cardinal george says he is anchored by prayer - his own and those of others. >> we are praying for him. we love him.. >> especially in this crisis, the prayers of so many others are a great blessing to me. i count on them and i'm very grateful. >> the cardinal says he's received so many letters and

emails of support in the last week, he hasn't had time to read them all. his doctors are analyzing test results consulting with doctors at the mayo clinic. and he expects to hear more from them early next week on what the course of treatment. he says he's not looking forward to the possibility of chemotherapy, but will try as much possible to maintain his public schedule. a man opened fire at a crowded intersection near the empire state building today, killing a former co-worker. he then turned his gun on police. as you can see in this surveillance video police shot back at him. eight people were wounded in the chaos. the gunman was killed. 58 year-old jeffrey johnson, who was fired a year ago from hazan imports, shot his former colleague three times with a 45 caliber handgun. witnesses describe the fear and

chaos. >> all of a sudden they're these cops running down. it was a scene out of c s i accepted it was real. it was not that long ago that 911 happened and so it was scary. the nypd's trying to determine if the bystanders were wounded by the shooter or by police bullets. two 18-year old cousins now face murder charges in the death of megan boken. the star volleyball player from suburban wheaton killed in saint louis last weekend. keith esters is charged with first degree murder and attempted armed robbery. johnathan perkins is charged attempted robbery. 23-year old megan was killed on saturday while on her cellphone talking to her mother. the saint louis university grad was in missouri for a job interview and college volleyball reunion. prosecutors say the suspects intended to rob her when they saw her on the phone while sitting in her parked car. police believe boken resisted the robbery and say that's when

classes will start for chicago public school students on september-4th as the chicago teachers union did not file the required 10-day strike notice today and doesn't intend to tomorrow. however, the union could still do so and whether it will remains to be seen. union president karen lewis... doing informational picketing at the 95th-street red line station with other union members... said just because an intent to strike would be filed... does not necessarily mean a strike would actually occur. >> technically if that's what it takes, that's what it takes. we have a democratic process. so it's not like a one-on-one let's make a deal and patted each other on the back. that's not how this process is going to work. mayor rahm emanuel is now saying he would get involved in has to in order to assure a settlement. ctu president lewis says she doesn't know what good that what to do anyway. more and more, people are

activist who says lewis' willingness to discuss race and class within cps, is spot on. >> we live in this barack obama era where people want to pretend we are a post racial society. no, we are not. karen went to kenwood high school in the sixties. she was the only black woman in her class at dartmouth in the seventies. after dartmouth, lewis attended medical school for two years at uic before following her parents path into teaching. she eventually married a cps teacher too. >> she understood that what she was teaching was not necessarily going to be the easiest thing in the world to graps, so she spent a lot of time with us going over things and making sure we understood things. >> stephanie carlile was in lewis' lane tech chemistry class back in 1993. she says lewis encouraged every student to be a leader with her education philosophy. >> each one teach one. we had to spend time with our lab parnter. she wanted to make sure lab partners helped each other, so we could work together and accomplish the goal of class that day.

two law firms in indiana are planning to sue b-p -- after thousands of customers in three states received contaminated gasoline last monday night and tuesday morning...gasoline that had to be recalled. b-p says it will reimburse customers for their fuel and but people were having trouble getting through to the company's hotline. the lawyers are putting together a class-action lawsuit -- because they say people deserve justice and assurance that b-p will be held accountable. it's been a year and have since former chicago bear dave dorsum committed suicide after fighting the ravages of multiple contusions. they are donating to
