good evening, i'm robert jordan. i'm jackie bange. heavy rain is causing a flash floods in several parts of the area. it is a mess i'm here. widespread reports of flooding across the chicago area. the unrelenting rain is causing major problems on lake shore drive pierre. standing water at the lasalle underpass. police had

the ramps' blocked on to lake shore drive. within the last five minutes they opened up the ramps and now you can see that one police officer there directing traffic trying to make sure cars and i get stuck. the drive was experiencing flooding. probably less than a handful of cars have got stuck. firefighters were helping people out of their cars. cars had to be towed. we talked to one couple that got stuck just a few blocks away from their own. >> we did not know what to do. it did not work out.

fairly mild day. the good news is that the hurricane worries are diminishing. >>hurricane worries are diminishing here as the tropical storm veers west and away from the tampa shoreline away from the republican national convention. the fear high winds heavy rains..even tornadoes. enough to call off convention events for monday. not enough to keep away the tens of thousands traveling to tampa for the convention. >>i think a lot of people were like me. >>i think people all over the country were looking for change. everyone is reassessing that. >>this was supposed to be sunny florida. home of the 2012 republican national convention. instead all eyes are on tampa and other coastal cities because of the tropical storm that could become a hurricane of devastating proportions. because of this. the convention is cancelled on its first day.

still quartets welcome conventioneers anticipating a convention now delayed. these delegates putting their support behind the romney-ryan ticket. >>i think a lot of people were like me. >>i think people all over the country were looking for change. everyone is reassessing that. >>while signs post warnings of evacuation routes and sandbags are being filled around town, right now board ups are barely a consideration in tampa as isaac heads west and away from the convention site. airports continue to land planes. still florida's governor has declared a state of emergency. out on the beach, locals in nearby clearwater know what the gulf can do. they're sizing up the swells. just a few small white caps for the moment.

call your local allstate agent now for a fe quote or find one at 888-allstate. that's 888-allstate. a sunday veto by governor pat quinn scuttles a bill that would have required makers of plastic bags to set up collection and recycling programs. while springfield legislators could still over-ride the veto. quinn and environmentalists say the measure didn't go far enough and local communities could do more by passing their own plastic bag laws. 13-year old abby goldberg of suburban grayslake celebrated the veto. she gathered some 170-thousand signatures in a petition drive against the bill. >>industry leaders are disappointed. a statement from the illinois manufacturers association says consumers paper or plastic choices will be limited at the checkout counters and they'll face taxes on use of plastic bags. >>something needed to be done.

>>the bill would have locked illinois into high rates of bag use. that was it's goal. one bolingbrook resident received a big surprise, today just days before he leaves for marine bootcamp. operation welcome you home hosted a party for sean wickert. friends and family gathered to support him as he begins his new journey. a surprise motorcade left from the menard's in bolingbrook and drove to wickert's house to escort him to his send off party.

wickert graduated with honors from bolingbrook high school in 20-11. he attended lewis university for a year before deciding to become a marine. the university of illinois received a record number of applications this year. and some of those accepted were at the u-i-c pavillion today for a convocation ceremony. classes begin tomorrow. the university says about 48- thousand people applied for its three campuses combined. a six percent jump from a year ago. u of i president robert easter says there appears to be an increase in applications in areas where there is a clear career path. indicating students are worried about finding jobs. so many people took part in this year's chicago triathlon that it has now officially become the world's largest triathlon. more than ten thousand people showed up early this morning for the 30th annual chicago triathlon. the event began in the water at balboa. it was followed by a 25 mile bike ride on lake shore drive

the greek community honored an olympian of their own today two- time olympic diving competitor christina loukas. just back from the london games loukas was awarded the medal of saint paul. the highest honor the greek orthodox archdiocese of america can give to a lay person. loukas competed in the 2008 olympics in china. as well as at this year's games. where she finished eighth in the women's three-meter springboard event. loukas was born and raised in riverwoods. the humane league sponsored chicago's walk for animals today in lincoln park. people brought their four- legged pets to the park to put

their best paws forward. the two-mile walk was led by volunteers. who escorted the foot-loose and fancy free strollers all the way to light refreshments and the summer festival for animals. donations from the fund-raising event go to the humane league's animal rescue effort and public education on compassionate lifestyle choices. a repeat winner at the box office this weekend. the expendables part 2 once again took the top spot with 13 and a half million dollars in ticket sales. the movie stars a bunch of action heroes from the 80's like sylvester stallone and arnold schwarzenegger. here are the rest of the box office winners.
