after battering the southern tip of florida... the republican national convention appears to be clear of tropical storm isaac. good afternoon. i am steve sanders. and i'm tonya francisco in for dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. our top story.... isaac is expected to make landfall this week on the seventh anniversary of hurricane katrina. the path of the storm takes it west of florida and into the gulf of mexico this week. governors in louisiana mississippi and alabama have declared a state of emergency. isaac is expected to become a hurricane and make lakefall tuesday night or early wednesday morning. forecasters say the path of the storm is similar to katrina...

but isaac will not be nearly as strong. it's expected to become a category one hurricane... compared to katrina's huge category-5 status. here in chicago we could feel the effects of hurricane isaac which is threatening to disrupt u.s. offshore oil and gas supplies. the average price for a gallon of gasoline in chicago remains the highest in the nation at $4.19 a gallon, down about 5- cents from last week. while tropical storm isaac doesn't appear as strong as other storms that have previously increased the price of gas... there is some concern that the storm could drive prices up temporarily. republican meeting in tampa for the gop convention are getting down to business .. now that hurricane isaac seems to be moving away from the florida coast. wgn's frank holland is live in nearby celarwater ... where he's keeping tabs on illinois' republican delegation. >>the illinois delegation just

are in custody as police tried to figure out what happened at this condominium 10:00 this morning neighbors called 911 to report gunfire they thought it started as a home invasion but the suspect broke into a first floor condo with a young man and his little child in side >>i told the police that i heard two gunshots and i saw someone running ... they confirmed that they had several calls it looks like one man was injured on his side he was carried out on a stretcher >>a few minutes later a vehicle was stopped we had two guys that were shot and two other suspects in that car all of them for all of them arrested >>the man shot in the

condominium is being guarded by police ... he was conscious during transport ... we don't know that the hitherto suspects who were shot the two year-old boy brought to the hospital was not hurt he has been released ... a lot of unanswered question about motive and weapons used in this crime a new study shows that most of the guns being used by chicago gangs.. were actually purchased in the suburbs. the study was conducted by university of chicago crime lab researchers on behalf of the chicago police department. it shows: 30 percent of guns recovered from chicago streets between 2-thousand-8 through march of this year came from suburban gun shops. a third of those were bought at chuck's gun shop in southwest suburban lyons. fifthwgn has attempted to reach out to the owner of chucks.. so far, our calls have not been returned. the prosecution rests its case in the drew peterson murder trial of his third wife kathleen savio. and now peterson's attorneys are

rare to be granted ... the jury heard from more than 30 prosecution witnesses many testified the third wife a drew peterson kathleen savio had feared that drew peterson would kill her she was found in her bathtub march 2004 ... prosecution presented a case that since drew peterson did not want her to get part of his pension and a divorce settlement he killed her and made a heart look like an accident ... in the next two- three days the defense will try to convince the jury that this was an accident does the coroner initially ruled ... it is possible her neighbors and divorce lawyer could get called to the witness stand ... as for drew peterson has sarcastic demeanor might be an issue in whether or not he takes the witness stand ...

>>there has been debate between true and his attorneys they may decide to put him up later on he's not afraid to testify he would like to if it is the right thing to do ... but this is a decision that has not been made yet. the defense says it will need two or three days and then the rebuttal there's an indication the judge may want to delay closing arguments until after the long holiday weekend ... in the courtroom next to drew peterson ... the murder trial of christopher vaughn enters its second week today. vaughn is accused of shooting his wife and three children in 2007. last friday, jurors saw dozens of photos from the crime scene. kimberly vaughn was slumped in the front passenger seat of the family's vehicle and the children were still buckled in the back seat. defense attorneys claim vaughn's wife killed the children, wounded vaughn and then committed suicide. prosecutors say vaughn murdered his family ... so he could

start a new life. a new email from rod blagojevich shows he is still confident he'll be released on appeal. he sent the email to his wife, patti, on their anniversary ... and she posted it on "facebook" yesterday. she said... a rogue soldier from the afghan army turned his gun on coalition troops this morning, killing two foreign soldiers. it happened in the laghman province in eastern afghanistan. the gunman was killed. the deaths bring the number of foreign soldiers killed this month -- to twelve. nato is requring soldiers to carry loaded weapons at all times on base. just last week, the taliban claimed its members have successflly infiltrated afghan security forces, for the purpose of killing troops from america and its allied partner seventeen civilians were killed by taliban soldiers in afghanistan's southern province of helmand. two women and 15 men were found by the side of a road. the bbc is reporting the victims were either beheaded or had their throats cut. local officials said the group had gathered to listen to music and watch women dancing -- when they were killed. according to the report -- the taliban disapprove of men and women mixing socially. another report said they were killed because they were government workers. more than 300 bodies, many of them women and children, have been pulled from homes in the town of daraya, syria, near damascus. opposition activists are calling it a massacre by the syrian government. the syrian army just recently

recaptured the city from rebel forces. videos uploaded by the opposition show rows of corpses. some of them were children, including a toddler. but the u.n. security council can't pass sanctions against syrian leaders, because russia supports them, and it holds veto power. we're learning new information about last week's shooting outside the empire state building. according to police: jeffrey johnson had no plans to return home after shooting his co- worker last friday. they searched johnson's apartment, and found keys in an envelope for his landlord. the medical examiner says: johnson shot steve ercolino 5 times in the head. ercolino had previously filed a complaint, claiming that he thought johnson would eventually try to kill him. johnson was killed by police after the shootings. he was shot 9 times in the chest. nine pedestrians also suffered bullet or fragment wounds- all shots were fired by police. a congressman wants president obama to honor the late neil armstrong with a state funeral. armstrong died on saturday at the age of 82. in 1969, he commanded the apollo eleven space mission and became the first person to walk on the moon. ohio congressman bill johnson

says armstrong was a true hero and should be recognized as such ... with a state funeral. so far ... the white house has not responded to that request. armstrong was a private man and friends say his family may not want a public funeral. a ban from cycling isn't slowing down lance armstrong's cancer charity. armstrong has been accused of doping. when he announced he wouldn't cooperate with the investigation .. he was stripped of his seven tour de france titles and banned from racing. armstrong said the investigtion would be unfair and one-sided. the head of the u.s. anti-doping agency says armstrong could have kept five of his tour de france wins if he cooperated with the probe. after the ban was announced .. donations to armstrong's "livestrong" charity shot up. the charity collected $80,000 on friday. it normally takes in about 3200 dollars a day. the former governor of south carolina is engaged to his long-time argentenian girlfriend. you may recall, back in 2009:

mayor rahm emanuel is addressing safety concerns after a deadly weekend in chicago. at least seven people died as a result of gun violence. wgn's robert jordan is live at wells community academy high school with that story. >>the bullets were flying through one police district according to the mayor he was here at this high-school to discuss a program that is newly instituted where eligible students 500 of them will be receiving free cta fare cards from five different high schools mainly the mayor was able to discuss the shootings which dominated his attention the mayor said that reason

police efforts have been working, and crime is down in many parts of chicago that were previously hotspots the mayor says that targeted police practices are working and they have the numbers to back this up: >>you don't get this 9 percent reduction in crime by accident ... what happened in the sixth district is not reflective of the entire city but we have to do what we need to do in this district there's an example of what is now working in garfield park and the englewood.neighborhood we have a responsibility to keep the trend positive >>it's a big challenge with a big payoff ...

a man on the west side not only robbed people; he also demanded that they remove their shorts. the robberies happened saturday morning in west garfield park. police say: david ray jumped out of an suv, and demanded that the victim remove his shorts. he then hit the victim in the head and stole his wallet. a short time later, ray did the same thing to another victim. only this time, ray also shot at the man. the victims were not injured. police arrested ray later that morning. david ray is charged with armed robbery, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. he's being held on $500,000 bond. the driver of the suv managed to escape. governor quinn has until tomorrow to decide what to do with the state's gambling expansion bill. the bill would create five new casinos in illinois, and allow slot machines at race tracks. quinn could either veto the bill, suggest changes, or sign it. if he does nothing it automatically becomes law. in june, quinn told supporters not to hold their breath for him to approve the bill. the governor has said that he's concerned by the bill's lack of oversight over casinos. he also wants more money set aside for education.
