stirring up memories of hurricane katrina... which hit seven years ago tomorrow. but mayor mitch landrieu says after 10 billion dollars in improvements to the levee system... the city is prepared to weather the storm. >>being prepared is the most important thing people here are battle tested the most important thing with these storms is for people to be safe and use common sense ... president obama says emergency repsponse teams have been working in the region for the past week... organizing supplies for those who may need it. tropical storm isaac is hurting oil production in the gulf. about 75 percent of oil production has been suspended as the storm moves through. some energy analysts say we may also see a release from the strategic petroleum reserve to keep the price of gas from rising. the white house says that's just one of the things they're put considering .... if supply gets disrupted. about one quarter of the nation's oil is produced in the gulf. isaac has kept things relatively quiet at the

the murders of an ex-soldier and his girlfriend may have been part of a militia plot. pfc michael burnett pled guilty to the murders as part of a plea deal. but burnett claims he did not shoot michael roark, or roark's yesterday in court burnett the the admitted to being part of an anachist group. he also said roark and his girlfriend were killed because the group saw them as "a loose end." and claims he tried to get his group to call off the murders. prosecutors claim the group wanted to overthrow the government and plotted to kill the president. a hate crime trial has started in ohio, against an amish group accused in beard-cutting attacks. the trial began yesterday with jury selection. sam mullet and 15 others are charged with with using scissors to forcibly cut the hair and beards of people in their amish community. mullet is accused of orchestrating the attacks. investigators say the victims were targetted after they had religious disputes with him. to the amish, a beard is a significant symbol of faith, so the acts could be considered

religious hate crimes. two people have now died from a rare virus.. after visiting yosemite park. the victims contracted the "hanta virus"- which is a rodent-borne disease. people get the disease after coming into contact with waste or saliva of infected rodents. symptoms include: fever muscle ache and diffficulty breathing. a third case has also been confirmed.. and a fourth person may also have the disease. yosemite park has since increased its rodent-trapping measures. tribute was paid to astronaut neil armstrong at a memorial service at purdue university yesterday. armstrong graduated from purdue with a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1955. a private service is planned for armstrong on friday in cincinnati. president obama ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on the day armstrong is buried. armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon.

pathologist who testifed for the defense today... would have characterized kathleen savio's death. wgn's amy rutledge is live in joliet with details in the drew peterson murder trial. the pathologist has been testifying this afternoon that he believed it was accidental he said the bruises found on kathleen savio when she died in 2004 were consistent with a fall. defense attorneys plan to get four more witnesses on the stand today they plan to rest their case tomorrow it will go back to the state for rebuttal and closing arguments all of this coming at a very important time of the week coming up on a long holiday weekend. >>if the judge decides to sequester them i have no idea what he will do ... if he does the jury will be locked up over a three day weekend and you do not want the jurors to rush to judgment so to speak because the want to get home for the holiday weekend ...

are alternating the patriotic colors of red white and blue prosecutors in the christopher vaughn murder trial are playing more of his recorded interview with police today. authorities questioned him shortly after his wife and three kids were found shot to death in the family vehicle near channahon. in the recording, vaughn said neither he, nor his wife could have committed murder. he repeatedly said he didn't understand what happened. he also claimed he confessed to his wife he cheated on her and was trying to be a better family man. a legionnaires disease outbreak at a downtown hotel... has killed 2 people. the outbreak happened at the jw marriot at 151 west adams... between july 16th and august 15th. 6 others also contracted the disease, but their conditions are not known. legionnaires' is a severe form of pneumonia. the hotel is still in the process of contacting all of its guests who stayed there during the outbreak. because the legionella bacteria are usually found in water the hotel drained its pool, whirlpool and fountain and

closed parts of its spa. city health officials say there's no longer a health threat at the hotel. officials are investigating a reported sexual assault on the western illinois university campus in macomb. a female student who was walking reported being grabbed and assaulted outside the main administrative building around midnight sunday. campus police have increasing patrols and are encouraging students to use safety escorts when walking in the evening. about 6500 drivers file claims against bp... claiming bad gasoline has damaged their vehicles. the gasoline came from a refinery in whiting, indiana. some of the gas didn't have the right chemical makeup, and wasn't burning like it should. that caused car engines to stall. bp says it will reimburse customers who have valid claims. of those who have filed claims, more than 4,000 live in indiana, and roughly 2,000 are from illinois. still to come this midday: tom skilling has your full
