the tribune reports mayor brizard's handling of the union and the longer school day. spring - when brizard reportedly took some heat for not offering 'well thought out' solutions on how to lengthen the school day. we caught up with the mayor.. neither wavering on the work he's doing for chicago public schools. >>i spoke with the mayor last night he has his confidence in the work i am doing ... i have the support of the board of education and the mayor ... we are working ... >>he's doing a good job anyone who wants to speak to me can talk to me ... all of this came just hours september 10th strike deadline.. union members left their meeting yesterday afternoon carrying hundreds of signs in preparation to hit the picket lines a week from monday. cps is readying for the strike as well.. finalizing its 25- million dollar contingency plan which will keep 145 schools open for half day care and meals.. as well as some activities for students.

where water levels surged over levees and flooded several towns. new orleans airport was set to re-open today, and classes were state university. but the weather is still a force to deal with. federal officials say the strong winds and rain could spin tornadoes. presidential nominee mitt romney will visit areas in new orleans hit hardest by the storm. president obama will travel to louisiana on monday. a 23-year-old man shot and killed two people at a grocery store in suburban new jersey. it happened just before 4 this morning at the pathmark grocery store. we're learning that the gunman, a former marine, was a new employee. police say he tried to rob the store and got into a dispute with some co-workers. he then left and came back armed with a rifle and an automatic pistol... shooting and killing two people, then turning the gun on himself. an 18 year-old woman was one of the victims. police say, the former marine may have had a history of depression and mental illness. a defense attorney in the aurora theater shooting has suggested that her client contacted his psychiatrist just minutes before going on a shooting rampage in colorado. james holmes appeared in court again yesterday. his attorneys revealed phone records, showing he tried to get in touch with his former psychiatrist at the university of colorado just 9 minutes before the shooting on july 20th. earlier in july, that psychiatrist, had contacted campus police because she was concerned about holmes. james holmes faces 24 murder charges, two for each person killed- and more than 100 criminal counts.

a catholic priest is facing intense criticism, after defending penn state coach jerry sandusky, and suggesting that young boys seduced sandusky. father benedict groeschel told the national catholic register, the same thing happens with priests. sandusky was convicted of sexually abusing ten young boys. but groeschel said, kids looking for father figures like coaches or clergymen, often make sexual advances to those men. and he said first-time child sexual abusers shouldn't get jail time. he has since issued a written apology for his remarks. oil prices experience their biggest one-day jump in more than a year. what's behind the spike. watch:

already -- six full time staffers have been laid off and hours have been cut back at offices in alsip, joliet and cicero. last fiscal year, the department of commerce and economic opportunity allocated $325,000 dollars. this fiscal year -- nothing. the cost to clean up grant park after this year's lollapalooza is more than twice what was initially expected. promoters of lollapalooza say it will cost $350,000 to restore the park... mainly because of drainage issues in an area where sod needs to be replaced. initially, promoters of the festival and the chicago park district estimated the clean up would cost $150,000. this year's pricetag is still significantly less than last year's total of one million dollars. still to come this midday: tom skilling has your full forecast.
