principlesals, i believe should not be dictated from the c t u or the mayor's office or anyone else in the bureaucracy ... it's just not right. i met this morning with my team ... we showed up at 10:00 my team was ready last night and they remained in the state of readiness ... my belief is while the team was available at 10:00 the negotiations did not begin until 1130 ...

since one of the major issues for any city is the educated workforce ... the public around the country will see a city that is committed to educating its citizens and ultimately its work force ... we are trying to recruit businesses because we are making reforms in education toward that end ... this offer is respectful of the teachers and is fair to the taxpayers and does the right thing for students ... it's over time a

16% pay increase over four years we cannot roll back what's essential to improving the quality of these students' education. we are pushing for the right reforms. nothing means more to me than the reputation of the children of chicago. i have had communications from a number of mayors around the country. there will be some focus on this and what's happening here in chicago but i want the focus to be on the children i am not looking for

another challenge i have enough ... but i'm not gonna allow another generation to go on a shorter school day or school year and not allowing another generation to go without the improvements that will benefit them from a rigorous curriculum. wasn't and go another year ... ibm is thrilled with the ibm science and technology school here so when it comes to reputation chicago is doing things and i did not want to go one more year without making sure i schools in have top- rated science and technology educational curriculum's ... we

will be on modelaodel for education reform their suburbs are owned city looking to us and that hasn't happened before a i care about the future of the kids making sure there in those classrooms learning with the teachers who are out there trying to do good things every one of the 95 schools achieving the hon. rolll did with committed parents and principals and teachers ... they take the time to ensure these kids are safe and they're doing

so through this strike ... i am not interested in any test of the mayor's office i'm interested in the elementary school testing that happens for these kids forever helps them to get through it and keep going and continuing their education through college i am not concerned about any test of my leadership happens every day there is not one day where i don't have a challenge the only test that matters to me are the tests our children encounter from first through fourth grade in reading and math that's what matters those are the tests that matter here ...

there's plenty of time for political valuation i'm sure i will read about it tomorrow ... the real test that should matter and that's why what the negotiators to stay at the table are these tests these kids to take through the elementary school years. i'm going to repeat: estonia is thinking of teaching commute computer code writing in the first grade. england wants to copy what estonia is doing. other states are looking at chicago thinking

how do we get along curse school day and we are here having a debate? which education system would you bet on ... this is what matters. i believe the teachers like our children belong in the classroom everything is down to two final issues ... and it's not air- conditioning. these are fundamental issues and evaluation system designed by teachers for teachers revised by teachers and this system in which the local principal shell pick the most qualified teacher to teach in his or her school i a do not want this to be dictated by bureaucrats downtown

the request was to postpone the strike and work through the night and deal with the two remaining issues and that was rejected ... this is a strike of choice it's the wrong choice for the children and it is totally avoidable and unnecessary. on friday ... i met with a

principal who improved test scores every year by 18% ... she has done an incredible job. even principals who are not on that honor roll, they are very dedicated. and there are others around the city at various schools ... they are all qualified they are getting great results as well and the hack

area officers to work with themthey have to carry out officers to work with them. you don't need the bureaucrats downtown picking these people. they should be irresponsible and then held accountable for their teams. we used to give school principals report cards on their schools performances this year that parents are getting the same information that the principle has been getting now i am going to make sure that the parents can walk again to ask the local principal about those reports directly. not only do i

want to give them this authority and retain that i want to make sure the parents have the information they need to hold these places accountable for getting these results. are you looking into filing an injunction? and speak to job security ... >>this is about education. about

the kids learning the fundamentals and getting that time in school for reading and writing and math and science ... the perspective and the mission of this gold is the education of the children the principles of the school have certain authority capabilities to hire the best qualified teachers to be in those classrooms. the injunction is a legal thing i will discuss with attorneys when appropriate we're in the middle of negotiations here but this is an important issue: do we hold principles

accountable? do you want the local school principal at any one of these schools to be held accountable for getting on the honor roll? many of them have done great work. i believe they should retain the compactcapacity to do the hiring of the teachers in their schools. they can ensure their success. there is a core issue ... it's hard for them to

be accountable when they don't have control over the teachers they recruit or higherire... nothing less we are discussingwe are discussing

the bargaining table tonya francisco is live with the latest at school board headquarters mayor rahm emanuel said those talks resume-1130 this morning the big lines are still going strong here at the school board headquarters and the more than 600 schools across the city ... this is the first time chicago public schoolteachers have walked the picket line in 25 years ... they are loud and they are proud but this middle school teacher says he's nervous: >>whenever you forgo a paycheck for the sake of righteousness it's not easy ... >>bye he says the chicago teachers union had no choice he saw a tremendous impact on black and brown teachers as the turnaround of the schools continued ... >>as a black male i represent a

minority of the teaching population so there's an incredible vulnerability we all feel we want to do what we can for the students but without protective measures in place this can't be good for the children either ... health benefits and teacher evaluation process issues are problematic as longis the issue with pay ... some critics feel that the issues that divide everyone are not as big as people would believe ... >>these are basic issues of trust which is earned ... that teachers cannot make up for what happened in the past nor can the bureaucrats ... ultimately we

want the best for the children and for the teachers ... the mayor calls it an unnecessary strike of choice ... there's no shortage of bad blood between c t u president karen lewis and the mayor ... his aggressive push for a cut of raises and a longer school year has galvanized karen lewis seine her union ... >>this is courageous to speak to this city and say that you cannot blame the teachers for the mess made by this city ... the last request in 19 days the encouraging story here is that both sides are back at the table willing to talk through to resolution ... charter schools are not affected teachers there

are not union members ... what is the bottom-line? robert jordan has and the newsroom ... known as the chicago public schools - reopened the chicago teachers union contract and used a tiny clause to take away the ctu negotiated raise last year, union officials have been seething, behind the scenes - angry that the cps -, as the union put it, for breaking a good faith agreement. with that behind the scenes vindictiveness, just under the skin, the scenario was set for tough if not impossible negotiations to take place to avoid a strike. but how close is close? obviously not near enough to avoid a strike.

and if both sides really wanted to prevent a labor action there could have been more real movement, by both sides, weeks or months ago. but thats not the way the high stakes game of labor negotiations is played. each waits for the other to blink first. cps has offered teachers pay raises of... 3% the first year. 2% for years 2,3 and 4. along with cost of living increases and other benefits equaling to 16% over the life of the contract or 480-million dollars for 4 years. so, with money close to being agreed upon here is where the two sides stand: >>we have successfully won concessions for nursing mothers and put more than 500 of our members back to work we have restored some of the art music

and world language and technology and physical education class's to many of our students ... >>the issues are not financial there are two other issues relating to the evaluations and the ability of the principles to have the accountability they need to pursue the results required but two thorny issues remain to be worked out... teacher evaluations and principals ability to hire and fire teachers. lewis has said the strike would not end until the total package including all of the disputed items are resolved and there is a signed contract. for every day that the strike takes place, the city of chicago actually saves some of the money by not paying salaries. but the children of the city are going without an education and some of the funds awarded to the city for everyday a child is in school will be lost.

so as we have heard both sides lament - no one wins when there is a strike. parents take their children cross picket lines outside the elementary school here some don't want to do this they just have nowhere else to turn >>i'm a single working mother and i need an alternative and i had to take off work ... this is not the school my child goes to ... >>and others decided to take their children to work ... >>i'm not gonna be that productive at work it's going to

be a challenge for the entire family many wonder how long will they be able to keep this up? >>i'm a kid can do this for a few weeks >>there were 144 schools staying open under the cps contingency plan serving breakfast and lunch from 830 until 1230 there will be structured activities ... the school is prepared to take up to a thousand children ... >>parents trust this is a safe place for their children today that they are regretful that this has come to this strike >>i hope they figured out quickly

sleep apnea among women may be more common than experts thought. a random sample of 400 adult women was given overnight sleep tests in a new swedish study.. and half turned out to have mild-to-severe sleep apnea. the researchers report those women experienced at least five episodes an hour when they stopped breathing for longer
