square off two more times. >>you can watch tonight debate streaming live on wgntv.com. meantime, a conservative news outlet has re-released video of a speech barack obama gave during his presidentical campaign in 2007. in the speech obama accuses the federal government of failing predominately minority victims of hurricane katrina. local communities were required to come up with matching funds for federal dollars. a policy that was waived for victims of 9-11 in new york and hurricane andrew in florida. >>where is your dollar? makes no sense. tells me that the people down in new orleans they do not care about as much. the speech was covered by the major networks in 2007. obama's remarks are not new but conservatives say his words were racially charged. they accuse the president of turning on and off the race issue to fit the occasion. obama's campaign says releasing the video is a transparent

attempt by romney's allies to change the subject from romney's recent comments about the 47 percent. >> former president clinton is out campaigning for mr. obama. he said obama and harris said a bad economy and is making strides to get america back on track. >> and manufacturing jobs are growing for the first time since the 1990's when i came up here. we have a quarter of a million people more working in the automobile industry working alone because of the restructuring which the president's opponenet opposed.

american. >> the pilots union may continue negotiations. a former chicago bear accused of trying to buy cocaine and marijuana is due in court today on new charges. sam hurd was a receiver for the bears when he was arrested last season on charges he tried to set up large-scale drug buys. authorities say he accepted more than two pounds of cocaine from an undercover officer. then while living in texas this summer. authorities say hurd tried to have a cousin arrange a deal to buy an even bigger supply of cocaine and pot. he'll appear in federal court in dallas today on those new charges. the owner of an animal rescue facility must undergo psychological evaluation and give up many of her animals. authorities raided dawn hamill's facility in the southwest suburbs in february 20-11. they found two dead animals and removed more than 100 others from the site. hamill was found guity of eight counts of violating her owner's duties and acquitted of two counts of cruel treatment. hamill was sentenced to a year probation, an eight thousand dollar fine and 30 days in the cook county sheriff's work

alternative program. for now, hamill is only allowed to keep five personal animals. >>cook county will continue to hold burials for the needy in a cemetery with a history of trouble. county commissioners have approved a new, pricier contract with homewood memorial gardens cemetery. the cemetery was caught stacking remains and leaving caskets in a chapel for several days last year. the new county medical examiner says the cemetery has made some improvements since then. this new deal will cost the county nearly 200 dollars more, per burial. the increase in price stems from new standards prohibiting the stacking of bodies atop one another and establishing specific distances between burial plots. >>no new negotiations are scheduled in the teacher strike that began earlier this week in evergreen park. about 150 teachers and 60 support staff are on strike in evergreen park district 124. classes are canceled for more

than 18 hundred students in four elementary schools and one junior high school. union officials say monday night's talks ended when the boards representatives threatened to not allow students to make up school days lost to the strike, or pay teachers for those lost days. the ballots are in and we could learn the results of the chicago teachers contract vote as early as today. some union officials say they expect a majority of members to approve the contract. the agreement would give teachers a base salary increase of three percent next year and two percent raises in the following two years. the deal also sets guidelines for teacher evaluations tied to student test scores. the school board votes on the contract october 24th. a massive marijuana field discovered near the bishop ford expressway is being harvested by police today. the pot has an estimated value of 7-to-10 million dollars. wgn's nancy loo has more from the far south side.

mike mcqueary testified that he walked in on sandusky molesting a boy in a locker room shower in 2002. and he was the only witness to provide testimony that the penn state administration had been made aware of serious allegations against sandusky. mcqueary's lawsuit says the university's actions have irreparably harmed his reputation and his ability to earn a living. he's seeking four million dollars in damages. >>jimmy hoffa's disappearance will continue to be a mystery. as the latest investigation into his whereabouts came up empty. authorities looked into whether the former teamsters boss might be buried beneath the driveway of a home near detroit. they took samples of soil on friday, but the test results show no sign of human remains. hoffa disappeared in 1975. >> to report out today says 162,000 workers were added to payrolls in september. that is more job creation and a sign that the job market is perking

up. here is more evidence that it is getting better. according to the labor department the unemployment was down in august. homeowners are letting the record low mortgage rates. mortgage applications climbed to the highest levels in more than three years. more people are refinancing their homes. rental apartments are not being snatched up as quickly. low mortgage rates are making buying a home a lot more attractive. you may catch more than they could deal on fish. as the weak economy led to less work?

parochial school system. how is chicago's massive catholic school system faring in these tough economic times? the answer might surprise you. wgn's julian crews has been looking into that issue.. he's live in our newsroom. julian? >>to some extent chicago's massive catholic school system appears to have benefitted from the problems at cps. the superintendent of catholic schools reporting that enrollment at the elementary school level is up. but depending on private donations in these tough economic times isn't easy. and the end result is pastors devoting more time than ever to fuundraising. >>how can they afford it? >>that's how we make these programs survive >> families are hurting. layoffs and unemployment have certainly taken their toll >> the economy is having an effect on them. we try to keep

tuition and of the services at a reasonable rate. >> they have had to fill in gaps providing tutoring and other support services at the center. the extra help has benefited students. >> our teacher is always here on tuesdays and thursdays. he is willing to help us. >> to keep these services calling the pastors have gone into fund raising overdraftive. >>they send us a note >> of those $50 taxed at up. that is how we make these programs survive.

>> the big shoulders fund raises millions of dollars for the catholic school system. 60 percent of all of the students that go to catholic schools come from families that are on some form of public aid. the doors are closing or will soon on four chicagoland y-m-c- as. facilities in waukegan and vernon hills will close on october 31st citing declining memberships and financial troubles. after shutting down a facility in grayslake, the y-m-c-a of metropolitan chicago closed its austin center on monday due to its deteriorating facility and low enrollment. a spokesperson for the group

stated financial pressure was not a factor in either of their closings. each y-m-c-a group operates independently with its own board of directors and nonprofit status. >>next: the financial struggles of inner city catholic schools. also just ahead: a new clinical study about a popular supplement and whether or not it helps fight colds. and, mental health experts weigh in on the idea of internet addiction and how much time online is too much.

in medical watch a lot of dietary supplements don't have the scientific evidence to back up their health claims. government investigators purchased 127 different weight loss and immune boosting supplements online or in retail stores across the country. they found that 20 percent of the supplements carried labels that made illegal claims to cure or treat disease. the report concludes that consumers may not only be wasting their money.. they could also be endangering their health if they take a supplement in place of a drug, believing it will have the same effect. if you take vitamin d supplements to ward off the common cold. it's probably not helping. vitamin d is believed to play a key role in immune function. but a new clinical trial suggests that even high doses of it won't help you avoid colds
