still banned in several areas. drew peterson's new attorneys are calling for a new trial. the new attorneys are john paul carroll and michelle gonzalez. they met with peterson soon after his conviction last month for the murder of his third wife, kathleen savio. they believe he deserves a new trial because he did not receive adequate representation from joel brodsky. we reached out to brodsky today. he refused a request for an interview, but he told the tribune the new attorneys were not authorized to file any motions. peterson is scheduled to be sentenced for murder on november 26th. republican congressman joe

walsh and democrat tammy duckworth face-off in their race in the eighth district. they debated everything from social security and taxes to defense cuts and president obama's health care law. in front of a thousand people in rolling meadows. >>are you going to vote for someone who is going to do the hard work or someone who is more of the same? duckworth accused walsh of voting against the interests of his own constituents. walsh called duckworth a failed bureaucrat who wasted taxpayer money while serving in the blagojevich administration. mitt romney says if elected president he would reinstate a policy banning federal funding of private groups that provide abortions.

romney also told the "des moines register" that he has no abortion-related legislation on his platform. that's contrary to earlier statements romney made promising to appoint supreme court justices who would overturn roe-v-wade. which affirms a woman's right to have an abortion. after the remarks were published online, romney's campaign spokeswoman reiterated that romney is opposed to abortion. a spokeswoman for president obama's campaign said "women simply can't trust romney." >>they want the ads pull since they are a non partisan no profit organization. the obama campaign says they are

the severity of the attack would have made it impossible to defend. a court in moscow has upheld prison terms for two members of a russian punk band; but a third member has released. in august, all three women were sentenced to two years in jail, on "hooliganism" charges. one of the women is now freed with a suspended sentence. no word on why she was released. the band was accused of inciting hatred for singing a song, critical of president vladimir putin at a moscow cathedral back in february. the women said they did not mean to insult the orthodox church. the u-s supreme court will hear a case today dealing with the issue of affirmative action in college admissions. abigail fisher believes she was rejected from the university of

texas in 2008 because she is white. her civil rights lawsuit comes 10-years after the supreme court approved the use of race as a factor in the school admissions process. justices will consider whether affirmative action is still necessary in education. the death toll is mounting from the meningitis outbreak tied to contaminated steroid injections. a 70-year-old florida man is the latest victim to die in the outbreak of fungal meningitis that's now spread to ten states. he's one of 12 people killed by the disease, among more than 120 who've been infected. the contaminated steroid was produced by a massachusetts company and shipped to 23 states, including illinois. health officials say as many as 13 thousand people received injections to relieve back pain and other complaints and are at risk of infection. so far, about five percent of patients treated with the medication have contracted meningitis. >>two american scientists are the recipients of the 2012 nobel prize for chemistry. robert lefkowitz of duke university and brian kobilka of stanford are being honored for

time for sports. the bulls debuted the new "bench mob" at the united center, but they struggled to close out the game. they opened the pre- season against the grizzlies last night. the bulls went on a 14- oh run in the third. kirk hinrich blocked the shot, and then joakim noah finished on the other end. later in the quarter. hinrich stole the ball and kept it himself for a lay-up. the bulls scored 32 fast- break points, but the bench nearly blew a 14- point lead by shooting one- for- 21 in the fourth. the bulls still won, 92-88. the bears still are not saying how long receiver alshon jeffrey will be out. he hid his broken hand the best he could at halas hall yesterday, and it'll be at least a few weeks. the bears held a light workout

in medical watch. how an expectant mother's diet can impact her child's risk of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. a new study finds fish consumption by pregnant women leads to a decreased risk of their children developing symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder by the age of eight. but at the same time mercury in fish leads to a higher incidence of a-d-h-d symptoms. the children in the study were not diagnosed with a-d-h-d.. but only exhibited some of the symptoms. the researchers say pregnant women should eat fish low in mercury. such as salmon.

a new study suggests that the herbal remedy echinacea can prevent the common cold. researchers in the u-k found that taking three daily doses echinacea for four months reduced the number of colds.. as well as the duration of the illness. the treatment also cut the number of recurrent colds by 60 percent among those with weak immune systems or a history of recurrent colds. several previous studies have suggested that echinacea could soothe symptoms and cut colds short but there was only limited evidence it could prevent the illness from ever taking hold. lunchbreak is next. a preview of this weekend's oyster fest. the chef from "shaw's crab house" is here with how to properly shuck an oyster!
