a murder trial gets under way today in kankakee. wgn's amy rutledge is live outside the courthouse with this history making trial. amy? a second man was shot in the leg and he survived. opening statements begin at 130. i have an initial list of about 30. he spoke with a touch and a state attorney or both very excited to see this.

>> the only thing television cameras will not be capturing his the jury. their identities are being protected throughout this trial. the second circuit court in the state put onto this pilot program. 28 counties are involved in the pilot program. ex-cop anthony abbate is back in federal court today where he's being sued by the female bartender he brutally beat five years ago. abbate says he doesn't remember the incident and that he was in a drunken haze. he claims he was angered by an earlier event that day and vowed to get thoroughly drunk as a result. his victim karolina obrycka is suing for 250-thousand dollars in damages saying the police department participated in a cover-up to save abbate. meanwhile his lawyer says abbate is uncomfortable with seeing the security camera video of the beating and that he's a human being and not an animal.

it was no stalled car that held up traffic last night on i-94 north of racine, wisconsin. it was a twin-engine beechcraft sky-diving plane that was forced to make an emergency landing. two people the pilot and a passenger were aboard. flying to sylvania airport near sturtevant. the passenger was slightly hurt but the plane landed smoothly in traffic without hitting any cars. all three south-bound lanes of i-94 were blocked. the aircraft is registered to a company in reno, nevada but is leased by sky-dive midwest. cause of the emergency landing was not clear but the national transportation safety board will investigate. it was once one of the city's most popular events but now officials say taste of chicago may continue losing money for the foreseeable future. the city is still finalizing financial reports on last

summer's five-day taste but special events chief michelle boone says the event almost certainly fell short of breaking even. she's hopeful it didn't lose more money than in recent years. in the past, the "taste" routinely made money.. drawing well over three million people a year. attendance began dropping after incidents of violence near the festival.. and moves to downsize the "taste". coming up next counting down to the election. the candidates for president trade verbal punches over foreign policy in the last debate. and later, organic versus conventional food for kids which is better and is it worth the extra cost?

earthquake experts around the world are appalled at a court's decision to convict six scientists of manslaughter in connection with a deadly quake in italy. the earthquake killed more than 300 people in the city of l'aquila in 2009. six seismologists and a former government official have now been found guilty of failing to predict the quake and underestimating the risks. they've each been sentenced to six years in prison. experts warn the ruling could severely harm future scientific research. one american and two russians blasted into space this morning from the baikonur cosmodrome in kazakhstan.

two days from now the three will link their soyuz spacecraft with the international space station for a six-month stay. after docking the new crew will immediately go to work conducting repairs and preparing space-x's dragon capsule for return to earth. nasa decommissioned the space shuttle program last year and it's now up to private companies like space-x in california to keep the i-s-s supplied. the only remaining way for astronauts to reach the space station is aboard the soviet-era soyuz rockets. it's the second i-s-s mission for american astronaut kevin ford. if you're claustrophobic, here's a place you want to stay away from. in warsaw, poland it's one of the world's smallest houses only about five feet at its widest part. visitors have to climb up a metal staircase and squeeze through a hole to enter the building. the ground floor has a toilet and bathroom, a kitchen with a sink and cupboards, a table for two, and a bean bag sofa. another metal ladder goes to t
