a tragedy that could have been prevented. that's what the parents of a young student claim in their lawsuit against chicago public schools. good afternoon. i'm steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. the young victim is obviously not being identified. the lawyer tells me that she is still recovering from what happened here outside of cook elementary school nearly six months ago.

that happened in the morning of friday may 11th. an inch man entices and 11 year-old girl away from our school after all other students had already gone inside. a man had apparently supplied the girl with alcohol. according to the family's lawsuit that teachers failed to report this or the gross absence. >> sheen and tell the principal. she called the parents of 5:00 at night. the school is closed this week for a fall break. i

think it is really horrible that something like this happened. i'm surprised we were not notified in the neighborhood. >> the girl continues to recover. for this to occur right outside of the school is unthinkable. the fact that it occurred and was seen by a teacher and allowed to have happen that is a problem appeared. >> an autopsy will be performed today on human remains found in

the city's south side. a decomposed body was discovered behind a building at 91-st and harper yesterday morning. the body is believed to be female, but it has not yet been identified. a utility worker checking in the back of the house, spotted the body and called police. the remains were found underneath a pile of tires. neighbors say they had complained of a foul odor coming from the house for some time. >>later in the day, some people fishing in the cal sag channel found what could be a human skull. it was discovered on the southwest bank near 130th and south indiana avenue. investigators also found other skeletal remains in the area.

they're trying to determine if the remains are human. riverdale police are investigating. a man who was arrested for a double murder, after detectives followed a lottery ticket trail, is now on trial. 42-year old timothy fountain is charged with first degree murder and armed robbery. prosecutors say fountain shot and killed store clerk, graciela rodriguez inside maggy's food store on south california in august of 20-05. and -- on his way out he shot and killed 75 year old nicholas guerrero, a neighbor who visited the store daily to chat with rodriguez. police traced the lottery tickets fountain bought to his mother's house. d-n-a linked him to the crime. >>the former chicago police officer convicted of beating a female bartender in a video denies he plotted to cover-up the incident. today is day three of a civil trial against anthony abbate and the chicago police department. in court yesterday the police officer who responded after the attack admitted that bartender karolina obrycka told him about security video of the incident. obrycka also said she believed her attacker was a police officer. however, none of those details ended up in the official report. the officer said he believed obrycka was just speculating. mayor rahm emanuel was asked if he thought there was a code of

silence within the chicago police department. if not asked whether they did or didn't. i think it is time to get to the bottom and put these issues behind us. he denied plotting with anyone to cover up the attack. baseball hall of famer and former white sox catcher carlton fisk is due in will county court next month on drunk driving charges. new lenox police say they found fisk passed out in a pickup truck monday night. the truck was in the middle of a cornfield, and it was still running. police say fisk declined a blood-alcohol test and had an open bottle of liquor. fisk became a hall of famer twelve years ago. he played the last 13 years of his 24 year baseball career, with the white sox. fisk is now out on bail. >> and all the men are calling for more police officers on the street. some say bigger is not always better.

basically higher postal savings we will be able to accomplish that within budget lines that we have already established. when people feel safer in the open of businesses they buy houses. the chicago school board is meeting today and is expected to vote on the new teacher contract which was overwhelmingly approved by union members earlier this week. the board will also have to figure out how to pay for teacher raises in the new contract. it calls for annual salary increases of 4-point-4 percent over four years. that's about 74-million dollars

a year. this is also the first school board meeting presided over by new chicago public schools c-e- o, barbara byrd-bennett. a suspect in the september 11th attack on the u-s consulate in libya is in custody in tunisia. "ali al-harzi" reportedly posted an update about the attack on social media as it happened. sources close to the investigation say that post was one of the first clues about who was behind the attack that killed ambassador chris stephens and three others. u-s intelligence agencies are working with tunisian authorities, but have not questioned al-harzi directly. newly released emails show the obama administration knew within hours of the deadly attack that it was linked to terrorists. for weeks, officials said it was a spontaneous protest against an anti-muslim film. now c-n-n reports the white house received emails during the attack that an islamic militant group was claiming responsibility. president obama has since confirmed the attack was planned by militants with suspected links to al qaeda. officials have not commented on the emails. indiana's republican nominee for the u-s senate says pregnancy resulting from rape is god's intent. richard mourdock made the remarks during a debate when he >> is what is wrong with washington today. win at any

>>a gunman who killed a man at a megachurch in georgia this morning is still on the loose. witnesses say the victim was on stage leading a prayer service when the gunman walked up and shot him at point-blank range. he was rushed to the hospital, but later died. police are searching for the gunman who is believed to be armed and dangerous. the world changers church international near atlanta has about 30-thousand members. it is led by well-known prosperity minister creflo dollar. the church day care was evacuated and parents were called to pick up their kids. police are searching for a gunman who fatally shot a man inside a megachurch southwest of atlanta. authorities say the victim was a 48-year-old employee of world changers church international. a source familiar with the investigation says he was on stage leading a prayer service when he was shot at point-blank range. the suspect then fled the scene. the church day care was evacuated and parents were called to pick up their kids. and a nearby elementary and middle school were temporarily put in lockdown mode, but the lockdown has been lifted. the main suspect in the shooting of a teenage pakistani activist who spoke out against the taliban has been identified. malala yousufzai was shot in the head two weeks ago after demanding education for girls. she's been recovering at a hospital in england. 23-year-old taliban student, atta ullah, has been identified as the shooter.

the suspect's fiancee, mother and brother have been arrested and accused of helping ullah in the shooting. a beach in central california has been closed indefinitely after another surfer was killed there. 39-year-old francisco solorio was attacked near a beach at vandenberg air force base yesterday morning. he was bitten in his side. another surfer witnessed the attack and pulled solorio out of the water. he gave him first aid until paramedics arrived but solorio died at the scene. investigators say they don't know what kind of shark was involved. it's the second deadly shark attack at the beach since 2010. for weeks this letter was a spontaneous protest against an anti muslim film. now cnn reports that the white house received messages during the attack. president obama has confirmed that the attack was planned by militants was suspected links to terrorists. a

>>in medical watch. the state of massachusetts has revoked the license of the drug company at the center of a meningitis outbreak blamed for at least 23 deaths. state investigators found that workers at the "new england compounding center" failed to sterilize products properly. lab floor mats were visibly dirty. and visible matter was found inside sealed vials. the state moved yesterday to revoke the company's license as well as the licenses of three pharmacists employed at the compounding center. federal authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the company's practices. a new study links bullying and other abuse to suicidal thoughts in children and teenagers. researchers surveyed kids between 10 to 17 years old. they report, children and teens who were bullied or victimized in other ways by their peers within the last year had double the odds of suicidal thoughts. the odds were tripled among victims of sexual assault. including assault at the hands of peers. and victimization appeared to be even more harmful if it was
