>>hurricane sandy slammed into cuba early today. bringing winds up to 105 miles an hour. the category two storm came ashore with waves up to 29 feet. bringing up to 12 inches of rain. knocking out power and taking down trees. the hurricane hit jamaica with 80-mile-an-hour winds yesterday. damaging homes across the

island. reports say 70 percent of the country was without power and more than a thousand people had to go to shelters. so far, two deaths are blamed on hurricane sandy. one in jamaica and one in haiti. hurricane warnings have been posted in the bahamas and a tropical storm warning is in effect along the east coast of florida. the hurricane is not expected to enter the gulf of mexico, where the u-s has extensive oil and gas installations. a teenager in colorado goes to court, an hour from now, to face charges of kidnapping and killing a ten-year-old girl. jessica ridgeway vanished on her way to school in suburban denver on october 5-th. her body was found last week in a park five miles from her home.

police arrested 17-year-old austin sigg at his home, and charged him with jessica's abduction and murder. sigg's classmates says he gave no indication that anything was wrong. the cold, harsh way he looked at them. the unease they just couldn't shake off when he did. so, when austin reed sigg was arrested tuesday night, accused of strangling 10-year-old jessica ridgeway, dismembering her and placing her body parts under the two-story home where he lived, many of the girls in that denver suburb weren't shocked. he will undergo a physical and mental assessment. the result will determine which prison he will go to to serve his sentence. the sentence to 30-60 years. he is appealing his conviction. the faa says they discovered a leaking fuel pump and the right engine. u.s. airways flew the jet more than 900 times. they're proposing a fine of $354,000. >>the statue of liberty will

reopen this weekend after undergoing a year of renovations. the changes will make the monument in new york more accessible to visitors with disabilities. an elevator now goes all the way to the observation deck. allowing wheelchair access for the first time. officials say the new design will allow some 26-thousand more people to visit the site each year. sunday is also lady liberty's 126th birthday. she was a gift from france. >>just ahead. and, still to come this midday.

new york stock exchange. >>the home foreclosure rate is on the decline in many metro areas but not chicago. realty trak reports the chicago area had one of the biggest jumps in home foreclosures. the rate is up 34-percent over the same time last year. new york had the biggest jump. as lenders rushed to catch up on their backlogs. tampa, philadelphia and seattle also saw increases. the realty website zillow just listed information on about one-point-five million homes that are in foreclosure but are not yet for sale. the company is trying to position itself as the go-to website for homebuyers. zillow is already facing criticism over privacy concerns. officials say the information on the site is all part of public record and their goal is to help buyers get a better picture of the real estate market in their area. the most popular passwords are

an update to a story about wayne gacy. the total last year and a woman had one of the victims exhumed to see if it was in deep her son who was reported missing 36 years ago in 1976.

violence... to quickly dispatch police and paramedics. more details on how the program will work in chicago will be released later today. a chicago alderman has come up with an idea to handle the police manpower shortage without straining the city budget. brendan reilly suggests north michigan avenue businesses hire off-duty cops for extra patrols. reilly says it would help the department concentrate on lowering crime in other parts of the city. police superintendent garry mccarthy says he's interested in the idea. mccarthy says he's also frustrated by the number of "non-emergency" calls his officers are forced to respond to when they could be fighting crime in the streets. still to come this midday. tom skilling has your full forecast!

against pertussis or whooping cough. during each pregnancy. giving expectant mothers a booster shot increases the chances that antibodies will be passed along to their babies.. offering infants increased protection until they're old enough be immunized. the c-d-c says more than 32 thousand cases of whooping cough have been reported so far this year. including 16 deaths. the use of herb and dietary supplements is growing in the u- s and many patients with chronic disease or cancer take them simultaneously with prescribed medication. but a new review of research finds that certain supplements can produce potentially dangerous drug interference. especially among people taking medication for cardiovascular or nervous system issues. the researchers say the biggest problems were caused by interactions between prescribed drugs and supplements that had ingredients such as st. john's wort, calcium, iron, ginkgo, and magnesium. as we get closer to halloween. the f-d-a is out with a warning about one candy you may want to avoid. the f-d-a says eating too much black licorice can lead to abnormal heart rhythms and other problems. black licorice contains a sweetener called glycyrrhizin that can trigger a dangerous drop in potassium levels. when potassium runs low, heart rhythms fluctuate and blood pressure can rise. causing swelling, stupor, and even heart failure. the warning only applies to real black licorice not artificially flavored licorice made with anise oil. >>lunchbreak is next.
