appearance on m-t-v. yesterday, the president stopped in chicago to vote at a polling place in his old kenwood neighborhood. he became the first sitting president to vote early. >>mitt romney will deliver a major speech on the economy in iowa tonight. iowa will be an important path to the white house. offering six electoral votes. romney claims his economic plan will create 12 million jobs and will increase take-home pay. a new associated press poll shows likely voters trust him more than president obama when it comes to the economy. the poll gives romney 51 percent support while mister obama has 44 percent. a new wgn-chicago tribune poll suggests, democrat tammy duckworth has pulled out to a ten-point lead, in her bid to unseat republican congressman joe walsh. 600 likely voters were surveyed in the eighth district. duckworth currently has 50 percent to walsh's 40 percent. duckworth enjoys strong support among women 54 to 34 percent.

walsh holds a narrow 46-to-45 margin among men. duckworth benefits from the recent remap of the eighth district, to increase democrats' share of the electorate. it's never too early to get involved with politics. this weekend, 60 chicago-area kids will be in milwaukee to take part in the mikva challenge's "elections in action" program. they were chosen by their teachers to spend two days in wisconsin learning about the presidential campaigns. they'll meet with other students to talk politics, listen to speeches and meet with the mayor of milwaukee. the best part of all they'll actually help campaign for their favorite politician. the mikva challenge was founded in 19-99, on the premise that

youth voice and participation matter. it's a non-partisan organization.>>fire destroys a south side church early this morning. not long after some major renovations were made. wgn's judy wang reports from englewood. it may be awhile before they can get inside and really look for clues. a safe haven for children destroyed. this was the back portion of the church of god in christ built in the late 1800's. >> i cannot even believe i'm standing here looking at this.

place for them to worship this sunday. autopsies will be performed today on a father and son who were found dead inside their home west of chicago. police in yorkville found the bodies of 35-year-old joe schmitt and his four-year-old son wyland in the garage yesterday. investigators say there were signs the s-u-v in the garage had been running, because the ignition had been turned on and the gas tank was empty. joe schmitt's wife lives in naperville .. and the couple was in the process of getting a divorce. they just researchjust recessed for lunch.

jones talking to his mother on the phone in tears. breaking down and admitting to shooting market sanders. he said it was an accident. he did not mean for him to get killed. teachers jones of admitting he was riding his bike that day and ran into the victims. jones told police he had a longstanding beef with the passenger.

never tried to intimidate the woman abbate beat up at local bar. karolina obrycka is suing the chicago police department, claiming it has a "code of silence" to protect officers accused of wrongdoing. but the beating was captured on surveillance video, so abbate couldn't deny it. his friend gary ortiz testified yesterday, he never threatened or bribed obrycka to try to make her drop her charges. with a court order in hand officials from the city of aurora entered a townhome this morning, to remove more than 300 birds that had been living there. the greater chicago caged bird club will take all the birds and find homes for them. david skeberdis, a self- described bird hoarder and the owner of the townhouse says he wants what's best for the birds. last week officials inspected his home and found it cluttered with bird feed, feces, and

garbage. they also found dangerously high levels of mold and several dead birds. we want to bring closure to this incident as safely as possible. skeberdis said he is living at an extended-stay hotel and looks forward to making his home liveable again. the hinsdale school board is going to allow "r" rated films to be shown in literature class at hinsdale south high school, after all. a parent who wanted to keep "r" rated films like "brokeback mountain" and "american beauty" out of the classroom, filed an appeal. the superintendent rejected it and the board supports the superintendent. next a horrifying discovery in manhattan. a mother learns her two young children were fatally stabbed by the woman they trusted their own nanny. also ahead, former italian prime minister silvio berlusconi sentenceed to prison after being found guilty of tax evasion. and the latest on hurricane sandy. the east coast prepares for the storm.

>>two children may have been stabbed to death by their own nanny. six year old lucia krim, and her two year old brother leo, were both found dead in a bathtub at their family's apartment in manhattan last night. their nanny was lying unconscious nearby, with a kitchen knife. police say she had stabbed herself in the neck. the nanny is now hospitalized in stable condition. the children's mother found them after coming home with her daughter.

the father was out of town. police don't have a motive. the mother kept a family log about her children. detailing the 'precious hours' she spent with them. the last entry was just three hours before finding lucia and leo. she wrote about her son learning to put words together. forecasters predict that hurricane sandy is on path to become the worst storm to hit the northeast in 100 years. they're calling it "frankenstorm." the hurricane has already killed 21 people across the caribbean. it is weakening, but it may combine with a second sotrm coming out of the midwest. if that happens, it could create a system that could cause one billion dollars in damages. the hurricane is expected to come ashore in new jersey on tuesday. forecasters say the storm can linger around the east coast for several days. it will also hit during a full moon, which means high tides and a better chance of flooding. former italian prime minister silvio berlusconi is heading to prison. he has been sentenced to four years for tax fraud. his attorneys are expected to appeal the sentence handed down by a court in milan. the case involved his media-set

group and the purchase of t-v rights. the 76-year-old politician has survived a series of political corruption and sex scandals over the years. berlusconi still faces another trial, involving an underage prostitute. an iconic b-b-c television host may have sexually abused hundreds of children before he died. jimmy died last year . he was 84 years old. authorities in london are now investigating claims that abused more than 3-hundred children as early as 19-59. hosted a show for nearly 20 years called "jim'll fix it," where children wrote him with special requests. investigators are also looking into how much the b-b-c knew about the allegations and whether the network could have prevented any of the sexual abuse.

most of those killed were police officers and afghan soldiers. several top leaders were in the building but were not injured. family members of a pakistani school girl, visited her for the first time since she was shot by the taliban. was shot in the head, for her efforts to promote education of young girls and women. parents and two brothers visited her last night, at the hospital in britain where she's being treated. doctors describe her condition as "satisfactory." the girl's father says the family has no plans to seek asylum and will return to pakistan, despite continuing death threats from the taliban. los angeles is now the largest u-s city, to require pet store owners to sell only rescued animals. the city council voted 12 to 2 in favor of the bill. it's an effort to shut down puppy mills and reduce the number of pets euthanized each year. shelters in california take in about one million cats and dogs each year. about half of those animals end up killed. the law would still allow people to buy directly from breeders. and some pet store owners, who say they work with reputable

breeders, say the law is unfair. chicago has already said if l.a. passes this law, it will follow suit. cycling union made it official. since armstrong was disqualified from 1998-2005 there will not be any declared winner. he will have to return the prize money he won. he has always denied the allegations. just ahead southwest airlines announces a new website for spanish speaking customers. and, still to come this midday. it's finally in stores. microsoft introduces their new "surface" tablet! and later in lunchbreak home- made ravioli. a delicious blend of ricotta, spinach and truffles!

hurricane sandy. wind about 80 mi. per hour. that makes it a category one hurricane. it is a scary storm. that position could throw some clouds over chicago. these are tropical storm warnings and watches in effect for parts of the southeast coast. we will continue to monitor the import and storm. skies across the area of mostly sunny. high-temperature today mostly in the upper 40's. temperatures dropping to a little bit below freezing.

taking aspirin can extend the life of some colon-cancer patients, according to a new study. researchers looked at more than 900 patients with colorectal cancer. they found those whose tumors had a mutation in a key gene lived significantly longer after taking aspirin. patients who did not have the gene mutation in their tumors did not seem to benefit from aspirin. colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the u.s. the study appears in the new england journal of medicine. people who live in wealthy neighborhoods, are more likely to save someone's life using c- p-r than those in poorer

neighborhoods. the findings, which appear in the new england journal of medicine, say where you have a heart attack, can literally determine your chances of getting help. overall, the chance of a heart attack victim getting c-p-r from a bystander was about 29 percent. but in higher income, mostly white neighborhoods, this rose to 55 percent. in a high income integrated neighborhood, the chance was 49 percent. and in a high income black neighborhood, it was 45 percent.
