good afternoon. i'm steve sanders. and i'm cortney hall in for dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. victims of superstorm sandy will have to wait for the next session of congress to see if they'll get billions of dollars in federal aid. 2013 will still end up being a little bit more costly. late last night the house approved a measure passed earlier by the senate. extending unemployment

benefits. a clear victory for president obama the campaign on promises to only raise taxes on the wealthiest americans. i also know all that raises taxes on the wealthiest 2 percent of americans. how this a had a severe impact on families across america. they still will take a financial hit in 2013. at least 2 percent more in payroll taxes. cutting into most workers' paychecks. it will hit illinois and is especially hard. >> is a double whammy. they're getting another tax hike, the 2 percent payroll tax. for a median house and come they might be saving 5000-ton thousand dollars a year. this is $2,100 less. while everybody is happy

that the worst was avoided many are disgusted at how the entire ordeal turned up. the little guy is the ones suffering. >> i think it was really irresponsible by our government. both parties led us down. the issue of spending cuts still needs to be addressed within the next two months. they hope that goes a bit more smoothly. president obama asked lawmakers to do so with a little less trauma. no word yet on when a new law will be signed. he has left to return to his vacation in hawaii. victims of superstorm sandy will have to wait for the next

session of congress to see if they'll get billions of dollars in federal aid. the house adjourned without voting on the 60-billion dollar relief legislation. the senate had already passed the bill. but with new members of congress being sworn in this month, the whole process will have to begin again. lawmakers say negotiations over the fiscal cliff took too long and didn't leave time to debate sandy relief. good afternoon. the lieutenant governor of the event she says as a former professor she is so happy to see what she calls the movement of history in this area. she is urging residents statewide to support illinois and become the 10th state to

legalize gay marriage. as well as jesse tyler ferguson from the hit show modern family. they can to say that we are more alike than we are different. we should not wait for the quality and illinois. it could be a for a full vote tomorrow. a new set of lawmakers will be sworn in january 9th. and issued a letter urging catholics to call state lawmakers and urged them to vote against this. and as a violation of natural law the lieutenant governor disagrees. >> there are a lot of ways that we put together families that cannot involve reproduction. we

chicago is already off to a bad start when it comes to homicides in this new year. three people have been shot and killed in the last 36 hours. 20-year-old octavius lamb was shot in the throat at huron and noble. 29-year-old kevin jemison was shot in the head at 45-th and champlain. and 19-year-old devonta grisson was killed in an apparent drive- by shooting at 58-th and sacramento. in 20-12, there were 506 homicides. a 16 percent increase from 20-11. and while chicago struggles to deal with its homicide rate, illinois' second largest city aurora, didn't record a single homicide in all of 2012. ten years earlier, the city's homicide total reached 25. but the number has gradually declined from year to year since then. aurora police credits the decline to "proactive police work. chicago police superintendent garry mc-carthy started the new year by helping his own officers make an arrest.

mc-carthy was riding along with two officers, when they made a gun bust. montrez armstead is being held on bond for felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. police say armstead had a loaded gun with him when he was pulled over by mc-carthy and two officers early yesterday morning. the police department says mc- carthy goes on patrols frequently, and this was not his first arrest. a momence man has been charged in the sexual assault of a woman near a rogers park red line stop. 18-year-old, james shorty of kankakee county, was charged in connection with the attack that happened at about 5-45 a-m on december 19th. shorty was identified using d-n- a evidence that was checked against the d-n-a index run by the f-b- i. the 50-year-old victim told police she was grabbed by the throat by a man wearing a mask near the entrance of the morse c-t-a station. she was then dragged to a nearby construction area where she was sexually assaulted. shorty was also wanted on a

the state of connecticut for the school shooting. the attorney filed a lawsuit request on behalf of the parents of a sandy hook student. he planned to sue the state for as much as $100 million for failing to provide a safe learning environment. he is now rethinking that after he received hundreds of threats. this is a horrible tragedy. if i offended anybody i deeply apologize. my intention was to stop the violence inside the schools. >> he says he is looking at new evidence and may refile that lawsuit request in the future. the aftermath of the sandy hook massacre in new jersey school district is trying it. starting today all elementary and middle schools will station an armed guard where children are in school. local mayor says he got

the idea for armed officers before the nra suggested it. the accused peter shooter appeared in court today. he appeared before a judge. a preliminary hearing is set for next monday. the hearing is expected to last all week. hundreds of people including witnesses victims families are expected to attend. prosecutors must convince a judge that there is enough evidence against him to proceed to trial. prosecutors say part of the evidence presented will be 911 calls and more than 30 hours of video. is accused of murdering 12 people and wounding 58 allegedly opened fire at a midnight screening. the state is suing the n.c.a.a. over sanctions against penn state university. they were imposed in

the photographer was walking back to the car, he is hit by oncoming traffic. >> levers of a deadly stampede on the ivory coast are blaming barricade for the horrific incident. 61 people were killed tyrian most children and teenagers. it happened after a new year's eve fireworks display. 50,000 people are on hand. the barricades blocked them from moving along a main boulevard causing the crush of people. the president ordered three days of national mourning and launched an investigation. >> at least 50 people were killed and dozens more injured today when government forces conducted an air strike on a few stations and the damascus of birth. among 100 people killed across the country as government warplanes hit targets in several provinces. the united nations

estimates that more than 60,000 people have been killed in syria. doctors are confident that hillary clinton will make a full recovery. doctors discovered the blood clots during a follow up exam. they say the blood clot that not cause a stroke or any neurological damage. she will be released from hospital once doctors get her on a set dose of medication. >> keeping her from testifying about the terrorist attack and benghazi. four americans were killed in the american consulate was attacked. clinton was supposed to testify to those postponed after she fainted and suffered a concussion. some

senators say they want her to answer questions before she steps down. the venezuelan president does not seem to be getting much better after undergoing more surgery for cancer. the country's vice president says he is in delicate condition and has only seen a slight improvement in his health. he had a cancerous tumor removed last year. paris since undergone more surgery and radiation in cuba. he developed a respiratory infection. the vice president says he is strong but no one has yet said what kind of cancer he is fighting. the new year means no more 70 what level. they can sell existing stocks until the runoff. the government is gradually phasing out the old incandescent bulbs in favor of more energy efficient led's.

it is always called here and the city. it is really cold up there. shall the bright sunshine. it is helping to warm the air just a bit. we should be able to see in these numbers at least two-three more degrees before the sun sets. we're not looking for big warmup today. there is a fairly big warmup coming by the weekend. still looking at these numbers. there's actually a lot of snow cover still out there. it is not doing much to chilled the air. and you're thinking that we probably have a chance of picking up a dusting of snow

overnight. it is not going to amount to very much. these are windchill values. it feels like it is in the teens over the place. around the country a few spots you will notice to our north and west it is chilly. most of the midwest at least. fairly mild air down through texas. could see in the finances and the mountains. maybe 2-4. no visibility issues at the moment. a reinforcing surge of colder

air. not really much to brag about. there will be a few flakes probably after midnight. a system has been hanging around for a couple of days now. there appears to be a lot of activity off the pacific westnorthwest coast. the little like the fact snowe according to our computers could impact parts of northwestern indiana. it looks like it is just going to be quiet as far as snowfall goes. ford as 6 in. of snow in north and west texas. you can see that the upper midwest could pick up a lot of it. that is one-tenth of an inch. the will cause us to reach

a milestone for the snow season you're at one-tenth of an inch short. mostly sunny and breezy. continued cold. high temperatures and a 25-30. remember those wind chills. for tonight the clouds will pick up. moderately cold. temperatures held up by those southwesterly winds. for purpose some mourning clothes. we lose a few degrees with the frontal passage. 30-35 degrees. that may actually feel balmy compared to the numbers we had. the real warm-up does not start until late in the weekend.

comparing their body mass index to the risk of death. people with a little extra weight at a 6 percent lower risk of dying compared to people considered normal way. the researchers caution that it is not an excuse to attack on the pounds. just found that of these people had more than triple the risk of dying. working for several hours, did not waste your time. you only need a few minutes every week. the key is committing yourself to three short bursts of intense exercise. each person only last 30 seconds. you can take short breaks in between. they say this is just as beneficial as a more strenuous weight loss programs. this high-intensity exercise does not stimulate the appetite as much.
