president obama appears ready to sign on to a bi-partisan plan for immigration reform. and chicago's undocumented immigrants are watching eagerly. hoping reform is finally coming. good afternoon. i'm dina bair. and i'm sean lewis in for steve sanders. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. the president is expected to

endorse a set of proposals worked out by a bi-partisan group of u-s senators. the plan would create a path to citizenship for 11-million undocumented immigrants, but only after the borders are secured. undocumented workers would be able to stay, after they register with the government. pass a background check. pay fines and back taxes and learn english. illinois senator dick durbin says he supports the proposals because it would take families out of the shadows. then the peace of mind to know that they can run their way to legal status. they can go to some pretty rigorous testing. a the end of the day they will have the peace of mind of knowing that they're part of this country. the city's undocumented immigrants and supporters are keeping a close eye on the development. >> are those immigrant community very interested in what

you're locked up again. no word yet on exactly when he will arrive here. it will supposedly be allowed to stop and perhaps stop at the graveside of his wife. because he is now 78 he may not be required to find work like many of the residence here. a woman who leapt from the second floor of a building to escape a fire is hospitalized in serious-to-critical condition. three others are in fair-to- serious condition. the flames broke-out at a building in chicago's south austin neighborhood around four o'clock this morning. by the time firefighters arrived, a 30 year-old woman had already jumped out a window to save herself. the three others injured are two teenage girls and a man. nine people were also displaced. the cause of the fire is under investigation, but the fire department says the building didn't have gas service. a man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death appeared

in dupage county courtroom and in front of cameras this morning. 23-year-old, adam belmont of northlake pleaded not guilty in the first degree murder of alyssa van meter. van meter's body was found in her woodridge apartment on december 15th with a fatal stab wound to her chest. belmont's attorney had filed a motion asking that his defendant be allowed to wear his own clothing and appear in court unshackled. but the judge denied the motion saying one of the purposes of experimenting with courtroom cameras was to give the public an accurate depiction of what happens in court. three schaumburg police officers are charged with shaking down drug dealers. and charges against three men they arrested, have now been dropped. prosecutors say officers john cichy, matthew hudak and terrance o'brien were caught on camera, breaking into a storage

locker in roselle and stealing what they believed was money from an out-of-town drug dealer. the state's attorney's office says the officers have lost their credibility. so authorities released 15 of 19 people the officers recently arrested on drug charges. president obama is losing another member of his cabinet. transportation secretary ray lahood said today he will be stepping down. he will remain in the position until u-s senators confirm his replacement. the president issued a statement. thanking lahood for his dedication, hard work, and years of service on behalf of the public. lahood is a former republican congressman from illinois, and brought a bi-partisan element to the white house. the deadline has passed for anyone who wants to replace former 7-th ward alderman sandi jackson. the city stopped taking applications yesterday evening. jackson resigned from the city council earlier this month. mayor emanuel is having a panel evaluate 53 people who met the qualifications. the mayor says he wants that list narrowed down to at least three finalists. he says he plans to name a new alderman before the next city council meeting on february 13- th. today is the last day to register to vote in the february 26th primary.

members of a woman who is missing have arrived in country to help in the search. shall say the mother of two young children was renting a room in a dangerous part of istanbul. the man who was the voice of charlie brown in several "peanuts" films is answering charges that he threatened to kill a girlfriend and her plastic surgeon. peter robbins says the threatening messages were the result of a broken heart. and in a jailhouse interview he said that he would never have followed through on what he said. robbins says he was frustrated

because shawna kern used him to get him to pay for breast implants. robbins was arrested while re- entering the country from mexico. he faces up to nine years if convicted on two counts of stalking and making criminal threats. a federal judge is expected to make a decision today in the criminal case against b-p for its role in the worst oil spill in u-s history. in 20-10, a b-p oil well caused an explosion on a rig. eleven workers were killed and oil then gushed into the gulf of mexico. b-p agreed in november to plead guilty to manslaughter and other charges, and pay a four billion dollar fine. the judge will either accept this deal, or reject it and allow b-p to withdraw from the agreement. loved ones of the 11 victims are expected to testify at today's hearing. a federal judge is expected to make a decision today in the criminal case against b-p for its role in the worst oil spill the internal revenue service begins accepting 2012 tax returns tomorrow but even if you file early, you may have to wait a little longer for your refund. he has said that the policy will continue until there are substantial gains in employment. members of the federal open market committee are

in medical watch. the nation's pediatricians are out with their first-ever type 2 diabetes guidelines for children. with childhood obesity rates on the rise, the new guidelines are aimed at managing weight- related diabetes among kids aged ten to 18. up to a third of diabetes cases being diagnosed among children and teens are type 2. which generally develops later in life. with type 2 diabetes, fat cells that enlarge with weight gain obstruct the body's ability to break down sugars. the new guidelines call on doctors to screen all obese children for diabetes. determine whether it's type 1 or 2 and encourage kids to get more exercise. eating britghtly colored fruits
