a crash course in winter driving as the biggest snow storm of the season hits the area. good afternoon. i'm steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. wgn's judy wang has been in the thick of it all morning and has our top story from the des plaines oasis. traffic and that was not a problem. this morning and was a different story. we may be a little out of practice. it was not a big storm. it just hit a bad time. people who did not get out of the door early had to call the boss. there were running late. i called him and

then he called me back. >> how late are you? >> about 45 minutes. >> it was pretty bad. i drive for a limving. >> expressway's and main streets were covered. the visibility was poor. there were spinoffs. by late morning road conditions had improved. the backup continued. the have the main roads cleared ploughs had yet to make a raid on neighborhood streets. >> this sounds of winter. have not heard them for a while. >> go out there and get some exercise. it looks like winter,

feels like and sounds more like it. more than 50 flights were canceled. flights were running 25-30 minutes below normal. no flights were canceled at midway. bail is set at 5-million dollars for an aurora man charged in the beating death of a 18-year old girl. police say 18-year-old juan garnica junior used a hammer to kill abigail villalpando. prosecutors say he then burned her body and her car to cover up the crime. two other men have been charged with conealing the homicide. bail was set at one-hundred thousand dollars for enrique prado. 20-year-old jose becerra was not in court this morning... but could appear before the judge this afternoon. abigail villalpando's body was found burned beyond recognition saturday morning in a wooded area of montgomery.

we're still looking to evidence and way of self homes. they did all know one another. we're not clear as to why they did what they did this was the first murder and brought in more than a year. police are investigating a possible carjacking and abduction in west suburban bellwood. wgn's robert jordan is live in bellwood with the story. the bizarre kidnapping and carjacking occurred around 2:00 a.m.. when the victim who was a soldier, the son of this chicago police officer said he was attacked at a filling station. he was taken for a drive before being released. police are investigating the crime after they were called by chicago police and told about the victims claim. the victim also said he was dumped from his car somewhere at the time. he sought

a 24-hour walgreen's. ironically the alleged suspect was caught on video inside of the walgreen's as he walked inside to try and use the victims atm card to get money. police came to the truck to view the video from this walgreen's and tried to identify the suspect. >> he was carjacked. he saw the wall greenstein open 24 hours and just ran for it. came in and fell on the floor. my co-workers called the police and ambulance. clooney was laying there the crowd came in with his atm card and a guy saw him. the guy looked at him and ran back out

teachers are on strike hitting the picket lines as of today. even though the strike notification went out in december, parents and students say they are all extremely disappointed. >> i do not like it. dropping her two kids off at an instructional program monday morning. two kids and not happy about it. >> they are here because their teachers are on strike after negotiations between the way chicago elementary district and the teachers' union failed to reach a compromise despite 16 months of talks. after an 11th- hour session ended with teachers rejecting the board's latest offer. an offer that the board believes is more than fair. we're very disappointed that it

has gotten to this point. >> i am sure the union is also disappointed. teachers union spokesperson says what the school board is offering will not be competitive to surrounding school districts and will lose good teachers. >> how can we hold on to teachers if we have a school board that is not willing to work with us? they both agree that the kids are the ones losing out the most here with both sides still far apart on a compromise.

>> these teachers out here picketing. they have been working in shifts rotating in and out. the district will continue to offer that interim program here. that is for pre registered students. there is a special school board meeting tonight. that is a closed-door meeting to discuss negotiations and collective bargaining. we're live in west chicago. new procedures are in effect for the way chicago police respond to 9-1-1 calls.

police will no longer repond to calls which involve vehicle or garage theft... criminal damage to property. passing of bad checks. animal bites. and calls which dont pose an immediate danger. officers will respond if the suspect is still at the scene or returning. or the victim is not considered safe or needs medical attention. officials believe the changes will free up the equivalent of 44 officers a day for other duties. two brothers squared off in the super bowl, but a power outage stole the spotlight in new orleans. the ravens were beating the forty-niners 28- to- six in the third quarter when the lights went out. the game was delayed 34-minutes, and then san francisco rallied. the niners were down eight in the forth. colin kaepernick scrambles 15- yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to two. ravens lead back up to five in the final minutes. the niners fourth and goal, but kaepernick's pass is incomplete.

at least eight people were killed, dozens more injured, when a tour bus hit a pickup truck and a car. it happened last night in san bernardino county about 80 miles east of los angeles. the bus, from tijuana, mexico, was carrying 38 passengers when it rolled over on a two-lane mountain road in southern california. some passengers were ejected others were trapped inside for more than two hours. investigators say the road was narrow, and the pickup was hauling a trailer. day seven of a hostage standoff in alabama where a vietnam veteran is still holding a 5 year old boy in an underground bunker. 65-year old jimmy lee dykes allegedly shot and killed a school bus driver, then took the kindergartner hostage. dykes is described as an anti- government loner. the f-b-i has been talking to him through a ventilation pipe. they've provided movies, food and medication for the boy, who has asperger's syndrome. he turns six year old on wednesday. the bus driver was laid to rest yesterday.

the suspect in the murders of two men at a texas gun range confessed to the shootings to his sister. christopher kyle was killed saturday afternoon. he was once known as the deadliest sniper in the u-s and authored the book american sniper. police say eddie ray routh shot kyle and another man chad littlefield. routh was captured after a brief chase near his home in lancaster. routh's sister said he admitted shooting kyle and littlefield but didn't explain to her why he did it. he faces one count of capital murder and two counts of murder. however police said he may have been suffering from a form of ptsd.president obama is on the road today. taking his case for gun control to the american people. the president will be speaking this afternoon at a minneapolis police special operations

center. he'll be talking about ideas to reduce gun violence. such as universal background checks, and limiting the size of gun magazines. analysts are divided over how effective the president's campaign-style effort will be. he left to combat a very interest group effort. president obama has not done a good job building relationships with congress. he needs to do that before he starts putting external pressure on them. she had been missing for more than a week. police found her body in istanbul on saturday. authorities say she died from a blow to the head. so far nine suspects are being detained. authorities believe she met up with some people she met on histogram. o n instagram.

iranian leaders are ready to resume stalled negotiations over the country's controversial nuclear program. a teenager girl who survived an assasination attmept by the taliban is speaking for the first time in public, following another round of surgeries to repair her skull. 15 year-old was shot in the head by a gunman last fall. she had been blogging in support of educating girls, despite death threats made against her. doctors at a hospital in britain added a titanium plate to her skull and installed an ear implant to restore her hearing. she is now able to speak clearly, though the left side of her face remains rigid. i can see you. back and see everyone. i am getting better day by day. malala also thanked her supporters for their kind words and prayers throughout her

recovery process. archaeologists say there is overwhelming evidence that remains found in the most unlikely of places are those of england's king richard the third. this skull is part of a skeleton found buried beneath a parking lot in the city of leicester last year. after radio carbon dating and d- n-a tests.. researchers are now convinced the bones are those of richard the third. a direct descendant of the king provided d-n-a for comparison. richard the third died in battle in the year 1485 and in the centuries that followed, his burial place became lost. his remains will now be re- buried in leicester cathedral. the rush to respond to the power outage during the game.

snow will track to the north of us. it has been such a slow season that 85 percent of the snow has fallen here with in the last few weeks. that is 7.1 in.. a winter of a sudden has turned off after sparing us for the first part of the season. that is not unusual we're running a remarkable 25 degrees colder than february's first three days. the previous itself is about 11.8 degrees below normal. with an average temperature of just over 12 degrees. we have a bit of a wind off the lake. a
