chicago entrepreneur penny pritzker gets the nod to join the president's economic team. good afternoon. i'm steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. they have had a tumultuous relationship in chicago with the city's union. the union representing the highest hospitality workers has been in a long contract battle with the highest over wages. today those unions unite here and there not speaking up. coming to an

agreement with the obama administration for its workers and therefore not ruffling and these others. when it comes to growing our economy and our middle class we should focus on three things. number one making sure we have good jobs, no. to helping workers get the skills they need to work those jobs. >> also drew fire from the chicago teachers union. a longtime friend of the present and first lady donated $250,000 to the president's campaign but fund raised hundreds of thousands more. following his cabinet nominations, the president left for mexico and costa rica to discuss how to strengthen economic ties. this is the president's fourth trip to mexico, and first to costa rico.

the president and two other democratic leaders will also visit chicago later this month to attend fundraisers. the president, house minority leader nancy pelosi, and new york congressman steve israel will attend two fundraisers for house democrats on may 29th. police are investigating the murder of a 23-year-old wheeling man who was found shot to death last night. wgn's nancy loo is live in wheeling with the story. nancy? a third suspect is charged with lying to the fbi. a detention hearing is scheduled this afternoon for a teenager who was

last night. they say he was out to walk the dog. he was gunned down about 1:00. >> up to 50 people were outside last night in joining the mild weather. this morning investigators combed the area for evidence after interviewing at least a dozen witnesses. some said the gunmen seemed to be shooting indiscriminately into the crowd. >> i think he was just the wrong person. nothing in the way of a shooting. >> we do have some gangs that have identified themselves out

hospital is accused of sexually assaulting two female patients. an arrest warrant was issued last week for 28-year-old luygy jara. charging him with criminal sexual assault. jara is a native of peru and a law enforcement source tells the chicago tribune that police believe he's fled the country. jara is accused of assaulting two women during medical examinations in march. he's been dismissed from the residency program at stroger hospital. mayor emanuel says a new casinht more for worker paychecks over two years. raising the retirement age to 67 for younger workers and scaling back cost- of-living increases. it is illegal because it would violate a provision in the state constitution which says pension benefits cannot be reduced. the senate president is pushing a union proposal giving retirees a chance to choose.

mayor emanuel says a new casino in chicago will be good for schools. the state senate passed a gambling bill for the third time yesterday. it includes five new casinos, including one in chicago. it also allows video gambling at horse tracks and airports. a proposal for internet gambling was taken out, and campaign contributions from casino operators are banned. mayor emanuel says casino revenue will go into an education fund. he released this video that shows new state of the art facilities that he wants to build with that money. the state senate has passed a law protecting consumers who buy a dog or cat from a pet store... only to find out their new pet has a serious illness. the pet lemon law, introduced by senator dan kotowski of park ridge, was passed through the senate yesterday but still has to be approved by the house and make it to the governors desk. the bill allows people who buy a dog or a cat at a pet store to get a replacement or a refund if their pet needs veterinary care for certain illnesses. the buyer can also seek damages for vet costs. coming up later

an accused of sending letters to present obama and others appears in court today. authorities say lab tests show five of six samples. tested positive for rice and. letters containing ricin were also sent to senator roger wicker of mississippi. the operation killed osama bin laden. attorneys who is responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men women and children at 1.1 of the

given the torrential rains and widespread flooding we've had this spring it's hard to believe lake michigan is still at near record low levels. the lake is up from the record low set in january but one rain can't erase 14 years of lake drops. w-g-n chief meteorologist tom skilling has been looking at the long-term impacts of low lake level. as virtually no impact on lake

levels. the weather however does. >> the family has been in the marina business for 57 years. the third generation to live, work, play in the buffalo. without the harbor and the beach and the lake it would not be what it is. these watermark showed just how far the lake is down. they have to build a new metal sea wall to support the old concrete ones. thi. it is
