to the restrooms. the chicago tribune is reporting that the attacker assaulted her. he used cocaine and he tried to stop her from escaping at one point. but when the woman heard her husband outside the bathroom door, she screamed for help. her husband, according to the tribune, chased the intruder out of the river north store with a baseball bat. he got away. joanne eder, chicago area resident: "that's terrifying to hear it's happening so close to where you shop and take your family." multiple hotels, a major shopping destination, and trump tower surround this little mom and pop bookshop, but locals say the neighborhood is changing. tourists walk up and down this block on east illinois all day long unaware that the homeless population is growing and the bad guys are becoming more brazen, they tell wgn. lucia malovany, area resident: "it's getting to the point that at night, after 8 o'clock, i feel i can't leave unaccompanied in the area." flalonder alexander, area worker:

harry romejko, bookstore regular: "the days of thinking there are certain neighborhoods where you can be attacked, beaten up, robbed or killed are over. it can happen anywhere." police returned to the bookstore this morning. we're told they are checking private surveillance cameras, the store claiming to have a few of its own. meanwhile, the bookshop "after words" is taking one good first step toward creating a safer environment. it is changing its hours. closing up before dark. lucia malovany, area resident: "you should feel safe in your neighborhood and i don't anymore." you can see the guardian angels outside the bookstore talking to people as they come and go along this busy block. as busy as this is late at night, this crime

took place at these hours just one day ago. the guardian angel city cable be in the area until the person responsible for this attack is behind bars. if you know anything about this incident, call chicago police. a car crashes into a north suburban school, injuring those in its path and sending them away in ambulances. wgn's amy rutledge is in gurnee tonight with the details. amy? the good news. an 11 year-old boy who was injured was released from the hospital about one hour ago with cuts and bruises to his legs. otherwise probably pretty rattles walking away from what could have been a tragic situation. at about 345 this afternoon a man confused the break for the gas pedal and went into the north entrance of a middle school pinning and 11 year-old boy underneath the vehicle. firefighters used the

jaws of light to cut the boy out from beneath the car. his injuries were described as critical but tv was released from the hospital. another person who tried to help the boy was caught by broken glass. that person and the driver of the minivan and a passenger were treated for minor injuries. school officials breathing a sigh of relief. this middle school student will start his school year without any serious injuries. we will be there for a and ban and for the support that he needs, emotional support he needs to transition to the middle school. our hearts go out to him. crisis counselors have been brought to the school for anyone who needs them. the advent held today has been cut short and will resume tomorrow. scheduled

events resume tomorrow. officials say hit the building is structurally safe. the driver of the minivan, the incident is under investigation and it is not known whether charges will be filed. an emotional goodbye for a hero firefighter who made headlines half a century ago when he saved a little boy from an apartment fire. friends and family gathered today for eddie groya's wake. the former chicago firefighter saved the then 5- year-old cuban refugee back in 1963. today that little boy is lieutenant rick vega, a firefighter who works out of the same lakeview fire house his hero did back in the day. he was there. he obviously changed the course of my life, saved my life. to be here for him, and there are no words for that.

undocumented and uninsured patients a place on organ transplant waiting lists. after successful protests this past week, a hospital official at northwestern memorial hospital met with the group to begin a negotiation process. so dangerous, it may not be safe for shoppers. why officials in a south suburb say a shopping mall needs to be shut down immediately. plus, open for business, well, sort of. the first legal pot clinic already signing up customers.

the village of matteson is asking a judge to shut down the lincoln mall, claiming it poses dangerous conditions to shoppers and employees. wgn's robert jordan has details on the lawsuit. i have to say that this is one of the most concerning facilities that i have inspected. extensive code violations, so many that matteson village officials think that people are in danger just by being inside pyrrhic want a safe mall, secure mall and one that promotes that we are pro development. in specters say there are pathways that lead to dead ends and doors that to not open, violations so blatant that the village is asking for permission to padlock the mall, closing all 45 stores inside and throwing employees

how up work. there are significant portions of the mall that do not have a sprinkler system. the exit issues, the sprinkler system is very serious and we are trying to get them corrected to no avail so far. safety issues that endanger people in the mall at this point and that is why we are doing this and we are hoping that they quickly address it. two men who own businesses inside the mall came up and said that they thought the situation was being blown out of proportion. they said they thought it was a power-play between a new york owners and the village, trying to force the new york owners to pay back taxes. even so they work more concerned about employees and they are concerned that if the mall closes it may not ever opened again.

medical marijuana signed into law just last week. a legal pot clinic already open for business in wicker park today. the area's first medical marijuana clinic opened its doors this morning and people lined-up. it's staffed by doctors willing to write a pot prescription. the clinic is owned by a former registered nurse who has a similar business in michigan. she says she's not worried about any backlash from the community. we have seen many patients have a better quality of life from this. i am willing to face what ever people have to face. if we're still in the right thing that is the only thing i am concerned about. patients will not get marijuana from the clinic itself. they'll have to go to a state-run dispensary for that and they don't open until january 1. a house of horrors reduced to rubble. the home where three women were held captive for years is now just a memory. her husband died battling a wildfire. now the widow of a fallen hero is facing a battle of her own over death benefits. and in the medical watch, why

a destructive end to the ariel castro kidnapping case. cleveland city leaders and neighbors standing by as castro's home was demolished. castro was recently sent to prison for kidnapping three women and imprisoning them in the house for about 10 years. today one of those victims said it's important for families of missing loved ones to keep hope alive. i want the people of their to now especially the mothers that they can have strength and hope and their child will come homeb.

just have love in god. castro is now serving a life sentence behind bars without a chance for parole. the widow of an arizona firefighter says she should be grieving, but she's fighting for death benefits. juliann ashcraft is rasisng four kids alone. she's threatening to sue for the families of 13 fallen firefighters. her husband and the others were part of an elite crew that perished in a wildfire june 30. the families will get 328 thousand dollars in workers comp, but no health insurance or death benefits. the city of prescott says they're not entitled because the men were seasonal workers. yemen's government claims it thwarted an al-qaeda terror plot. officials say the group wanted to take over strategic ports, and attack oil pipelines. their announcement comes as the u.s. and british embassies remain closed there. hundreds of yemeni military vehicles and troops are protecting embassies, government offices, and the airport. u.s. drone strikes also killed seven suspected al-qaeda militants today.

america's relationship with russia is getting even more strained. president obama will skip a planned meeting with russian president vladimir putin next month. "there was unanimous support for the decision not to, within the national security council, not to hold the summit." mister obama will attend the g- 20 summit hosted by putin in saint petersburg, but they won't go one-on-one. the u.s. is angry that russia gave asylum to nsa leaker edward snowden. the white house is also frustrated over stalled agreements on missile defense, trade, and human rights. former president george w. bush is home today following a heart procedure to fix a blocked artery. the 67-year-old received a stent to alleviate the clogged artery on tuesday. the blockage was found during bush's annual physical examination at the cooper clinic in dallas on monday. bush's office announced the procedure was performed successfully without complications. he is said to be in high spirits and is eager to return to his normal schedule tomorrow. ebony magazine is devoting its september issue to trayvon

a 26-year-old bottlenose dolphin gave birth to the calf on friday. allie began showing signs the day before, and she went into full labor around two hours prior to her delivery. the approximately 40-pound, 3- foot-long calf appears healthy and strong. no name yet. two other bottlenose dolphins are due to give birth this fall. coming up ... the white sox try and do something to the yankees that they haven't done in a century. and the cubs and phillies are both out of the playoff chase but they were still playing very hard tonight. rich king is next with sports.
