driving. jae kong accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brakes while his minivan was in reverse. the van crashed into a set of doors at the school, pinning the boy underneath. no further citations are expected in the investigation. police in evanston and chicago are hunting for the suspect in a sexual assault tonight, part of the attack caught by surveillance cameras. wgn's randi belisomo is in evanston with the latest on the search. randi? the attack happened just the on the bushes behind me. the security cameras from the distance across the street captured the moments before and after the sexual assault. it happens quickly. watch in the upper right part of the screen as the suspect clutches the woman's neck and house with her across the street. cameras catch her walking away down the sidewalk. the surveillance video is time stamped just before 6:00 p.m. tuesday. i feel like i had survivor's

guilt. a sad thing to see that happen. fred and his white did not come into their epsilon until four hours later. it is one of the few business owners in this area of evanston. it doesn't help that these buildings are without tenants, and the two on the side. the suspect, a black male with a dark complexion and a black sweatshirt and teacher tried to grab the victim was walking west on howard. when he had trouble he manhandled her across the street and here to the gangway between two empty buildings. when she broke free she ran to howard and dodge where she called a police top passer. she returned to the scene and called evanston police for help also. she was treated for minor injuries. have been held up twice but not

here fortunately. you just have to be careful. fred's wife said she is cautious. i am careful about locking the door. to see the victim on videotape at know you're helpless. we see it happening but we don't know who it is. several cars travelled this stretch of howard during the short time window of the attack. evanston police want to hear from those drivers. a scary moment for a cta employee and tonight police are searching for her attacker. the crime happened yesterday right after the cta worker started her shift at the blue line stop on chicago avenue. it was around 5am when a man forced her into a bathroom and began choking her. she screamed and tried to fight him off. the man took off when someone else came into the bathroom. commuters are being extra cautious.

whenever i walk around this neighborhood at night i looked behind me. it's not paranoid. you have to be cautious. i'd just aren't taking the train yesterday. i probably will not take the train today. chicago police are looking at security video from the train station and from nearby stores in an effort to identify the attacker. an ex-marine says he was just trying to protect his family when he killed a burglar in the garage. wgn's dan ponce is in the newsroom with the story of a harrowing break-in on the south side. dan? it happened overnight in chicago's west pullman neighborhood. the homeowner is 44 year old mark hayes. he spoke to reporters very briefly outside his home earlier tonight. he says he had no choice but to defend himself. everything was a tragedy. somebody's father or son passed. all i was trying to do was protect my house and myself. he woke up around 315 this morning when the alarm went off for his crotch. he checked it out and

found themselves face to face with a burglar inside the garage. the burglar attacked him with a hammer. but he said he had no chancchoice but to defend himself. he stabbed the man with a fishing knife. the burglar made his way to his car and then to the hospital where he later died. the man's father said he feared for his life. but man broke into the garage. he went into the crotch and confronted him and the guy said, get a gun like there is another person there. and my son did not know whether there was somebody there or not. the man's son and wife were home at the time. he is ex marine. he knows how to operate so the speaker. hayes said there have been

chief could be out of a job. the board trustee says he received a call from the chief at 4:00 this afternoon telling him he had been removed crumbly position and packing in for his service. the dixmoor police have been in the news after two officers walked off their chairs shift complaining about work conditions. last night trusties held a special meeting agreeing to hire part-time officers who started with the department today. at no time during the meeting last night or this week did the mayor mentioned her displeasure with the work of the chief. this village is going down because of things being politically motivated. it is not about what is best for the community. the chief was

following a head-on collision with a drunk driver. first responders worked for 45 minutes to get her out, but their cutting equipment was no match for her older model mercedes. suddenly, a catholic priest appeared at the scene and offered to pray with katie and her rescuers. he told everyone to remain calm and that their equipment would now work. moments later another recue team showed up with newer equipment and got katie out. when the crew went to thank him, the priest was nowhere to be found. we had a lot of tools that i lost to do many things and we have an extensive training. in this particular case it is my feeling that it was not the more than sheer faith and nothing short of a miracle. there was no clue as to where the priest came from. the highway was blocked for a quarter of a mile during the hour and a half rescue with no bystanders and no parked cars nearby.

[ morty ] i'm listening! i want you to know. just as students get ready to head back to class, the citys buildings department is really paying attention to the abandoned homes that are scattered along the routes the kids walk when they go to school. a lot of those homes are being torn down and left as empty lots. wgn's lourdes duarte visited a neighborhood that had several homes torn down a year ago to see what a difference demolition can make.

think about this. more than 18,000 abandoned homes in chicago. the city tackling them one at a time. in some places youve got blocks with nearly half the homes torn down, and residents are worried about what comes next. a year ago, this two story abandoned home came down in chicagos southside. it wasnt the only one. in fact, last year about 750 of them were torn down. "it was a couple weeks, they did it fast." mashon dixon lived right next door to one... "it was actually an abandoned building where a lot of people sell drugs." the building cleared out, all as a way to keep crime down on a block that was riddled with it. "so what has happened since this was torn down? a lot of gang members dont really: hang on this block." just down the street on south laflin, mr. early noticed the same thing. he actually now has 3 empty lots right next to him. "so every time i see an x thats

a house thats being torn down. how many have you seen so far? oh quite a few." quite a few because the city, like so many others, dealing with high crime sees this as a way out. tana mccoy, professor at roosevelt university, knows the numbers. "some studies have shown that violent crimes are more likely to occur around abandoned buildings." heres how it all shakes out. since 2005, a 50% increase in calls to police for service around abandoned buildings. thats 7 to 9 police calls a day, or 1500 city dollars going to each abandoned building every year. so the red 'x' already marking the future of this abandoned home. "theyre going to tear it down, what do you think about that? i think they should fix it up cause now i have a vacant lot. now i have to try to keep it up."

mary houston sits on her porch afraid the tear downs will mean they will become a forgotten block with fewer city services coming their way. the department of buildings promising thats not the case. "we never want demolition to be the first option. we want these houses to come back to habitable use." but that hasnt been possible. they continue to work with banks to make sure the buildings are kept up. but fewer people investing in these properties means the city is finding the dollars to tear them down. how many? depends on who owns them and how theyre kept up. "weve been focusing on the safe passage routes to make sure that kids are safe when they start in the fall." that means that by the end of the summer, another 17 will come down. mary and so many others on her block say, yes, crime is down but shes worried about long term effects. "investors dont want to come into those neighborhoods and

tools and players and coaches to come up victorious that day. the white sox are off tonight. there are reports tonight the texas rangers have placed a bid on alex rios. the white sox have 48 hours to decide what to do. they could keep him, or trade him to the rangers, or simply allow the rangers to claim him. that would obligate texas to pick up his salary for this year and next. the sox would save roughly 15 million dollars in that final scenario. jeff smardija roughed up in philly this afternoon, and it did not take long. bottom of the third. derrin rough unloads for a 2 run shot, and the phillies had a 4-0 lead. they just kept pouring it on. in the 4th, chase utley jumps on the bandwagon of hits. a double and the phillies led 6-1. the cubs bullpen as bad a smardija today. rookie cody ashey really seals the deal in the same inning. he slams one over the wall. the phillies win 12-1. smaradija's line painful. three and one third. 11 hits. 9 runs.

an overnight rain made for ideal conditions at oak hill in rocherster new york for the final major of the year...the pga championship. tiger woods and phil mickleson unable to cash in...both had double bogeys on their final hole. the wannemaker trophy at stake...and was have co leaders....jim furyk going for the long birdie on 16 and it will drop....jim in with a 65...and he shares the lead with the masters champ adam scott... adam with a nice approach on the 7th hole....he had a string of 5 birdies in a row... to grab a share of the lead after 18 holes.. tiger woods final hole was the 9th and he made a mess of it...he chunks a chip shot out of the rough....woods is plsu one...6 off the pace.. as is phil mickelson...he also had trouble on his last hole...the 18th...a drive way out to the left and phil had to settle for a six...a double bogey...he is also one over with a long way to go....
