theres a new driver in town! the traditional cab light being replaced by your phone. ridesharing apps are popping up and some argue cab drivers are losing out. theyre sometimes 25% cheaper than your average cab ride but how much do you know about how they work? and is the city planning to step in? ( honk honk ) the sound of a truly big city. in chicago cabs are literally lined up. "allright take care." thousands of em. from yellow, red, white and blue. now, throw into the mix pink. "i like how they have the little mustaches on the car, honestly i think its cool." this is one of chicagos newest cabs, sort of. the pink mustache is the trademark for whats known as lyft, basically an app to find a ride. not a taxi, but a ride. on this day, the ride comes from luis. "its usually like northside, the loop." on a whim he applied online and
9:17 pm

"so are you making money off it? its been pretty good. i dont want to throw out numbers . when they say you make 15 to 20 dollars they aint lying." which is why lyft isnt the only company capitalizing on the need for rides in chicago. uber rolled out uber x. then theres side car. same concept. your average person serving as a driver. easy enough but its created a bit of an issue. a stack of rules and regulations for licensed city cabs. actually, taxi medallions alone can cost more than 300-thousand dollars. see the problem! "theres pretty much no regulation in chicago of the ride sharing app." george, who follows the taxi industry through his chicago paper, is raising the red flags. who are these drivers? are there background checks? how about insurance? chicago cabs have to have." luis will tell you lyft did an extensive background search on him. "cause it took me 3 weeks . if i had been charged with a d-u- i, any of that stuff." as far as insurance, the ridesharing apps say they take care of the added policies. either way chicago now has to figure out how to oversee these apps. in other cities theyve picked up speed too. san francisco, new york, l-a have all at one point kept those apps from operating. in l-a theyll start regulating them, not like a cab, but theyll follow some guidelines. "typically when we run into hurdles its often the city not understanding what were doing and then consumers step up and say this is an option we want." but what happens here in chicago? the citys department for consumer protection isnt saying, at least not yet. they declined an on-camera interview

"i mean thats really not fair, but its chicago, nothing is fair in chicago." it all seems fair to luis though who has found a new way to meet his bottom line. "like they said its your friend with a car, there shouldnt be any concern over it." not clear when or 'if' the city will start regulating them. why are they allowed to operate without special licensing? think of it this way. everyone getting rides from lyft or uber is part of an app, almost like a friends network. no different than me calling my best friend for a ride and giving her ten bucks afterwards. there are a lot of lawsuits still pending. well see where it ends up.
