2 1/2-3 in. is what we are expecting. this is the weather watch an advisory. it remains in effect until noon. the snow will let up around noon. it will not clear up until about 2:00 p.m.. this snow is coming down fairly fast. we have correcting and blowing snow. the roads won't be so good early. more snow between 4 in. is the total. the snow ends around 2:00 p.m.. expect to see another 3 in. there. this system does get out in the afternoon and then we try out. we will cool down. its 24 right now in o'hare. temperatures are going the wrong way. with this wind that windchill will feel much cooler. 11 at o'hare. here is the day

morning. just north of that cicero avenue exit. the man is said to be in good condition at crest medical center in oak lawn. >>let's see how the snow is affecting the commute so far. tonya is on the road with an update. tonya? >> we are only a short drive just passing soldier field. as mentioned, the roads are snow- covered. lake shore drive is actually looking good. we are now behind three snowplows making their way to the south. they are doing this like a tag team. one is in the far left lane and then they fanned out across the drive. this is what we are seeing as we head south on lake shore drive. we have some video that we would like to show. we caught up with a few cars that were probably moving too fast. this is the in the 55

workers had to hook up a cable to pull that ban on to the expressway around 2:00. there have been multiple standouts on 55. this is down and the blinof joliet area. all systems been out of 80 near 55. there are about 200 snowplows out focused on the main streets and of course lake shore drive. want to make sure everyone is able to get around this morning. once the main street and lecture drive is taking care of sidestreets no problems, and south but it is 4:00 a.m.. take it slow. i came in on the dan

ryan. the roads were definitely snow-covered. you could not see the lanes as you're driving. still people were thinking it would be better to go faster. we saw someone spin out. take it slow. take extra time. take public transportation. back to. >> as usual, the snowfall is also covering northwest indiana. that area could see anywhere from three to eight inches of snow by this afternoon. strong winds will reduce visibility, making the roads even more dangerous to take on. in-dot says it had its plows on state highways before the snow came. >> been very busy. >> for a tow truck operator this is like white and gold. >> it's like platinum right now. >> i don't like it. we thought

it would be one or the other of the cold or the snow. but today we give both. it's a lot. >> she is right. it's nonstop!gary, indiana, is implementing a new plan for snow plowing. they want drivers parking on the west side of streets so plows, emergency vehicles, and buses have more room to get around. overnight snow is leaving a slushy mess in the city. o'hare airport already has a couple inches of snow. we're expecting anywhere between three to five inches today, with the higher amounts falling south of the city and near the lake. we also have 20 to 25 mile per hour winds blowing it all over the place. metra issued a service alert warning of possible delays and service disruptions during the evening commute into wednesday. passengers are advised to allow extra travel time and to check metra's website for service updates. today's a bad day to be low on road salt, but that's what some suburbs are facing. elmhurst is one of the lucky ones. they say they just got a new supply yesterday morning. even chicago is watching its dwindling supply. the city is mixing its reserves

with sand, to make it last longer. you can expect plenty of flight cancellations and delays at both of chicago's airports. o'hare and midway both had about two inches of new snow before midnight. more than 380-flights at o'hare were cancelled in advance of the heavier snow we're going to get. at midway, more than 40 flights are cancelled. delays are 20 minutes or more. stay with wgn all morning for the latest weather developments. you can also log onto our website at *wgn t-v dot-com ... or download our free weather app, for your smartphone and tablet. two strangers are responsible for saving a man and his dog from the icy waters of lake michigan. police say a man was walking three dogs near montrose point yesterday evening. he fell in the lake trying to save one of his dogs. a couple of good samaritans heard the dogs barking along the bank, and saw the man and dog in the water. one woman called 9-1-1, while the man tried to pull the man and dog to safety. >> i was by myself. thank god someone came by. >> my eyes were starting to

glaze over. i knew things were getting pretty bad. >> the man was pulled about half way up the embankment before rescue teams got there to pull him the rest of the way up. he was taken to the hospital in serious condition. the dogs are expected to be o- k. a coyote was spotted on lake michigan by hyde park. skycam nine saw the coyote out on the frozen lake off 59th street -- at least a half mile from shore -- walking *away from land. a chicago police department helicopter tried steering the coyote toward the shore. but - eventually the pilot had to leave to refuel. the fire department responded with equipment and an ambulance close to the scene -- just in case. no update on whether the coyote made it to shore. that was amazing. pulling out you could see how far out they were. >> they knew that was a coyote with a defdeath wish. >> let's hope it's ok. keep your

pets comfortable today. let's take a look. today the winter weather advisory remains in effect until noon. most areas have seen between two-3 in. of snow. we're expecting as much, our way. the snow will not let up until after lunch. it will clear around noon and will probably clear the whole region by 2:00 p.m.. this is a huge storm. it's basically crippling much of the u.s.. more than half the country has some form of snow. this afternoon expected this note to taper off. temperatures will fall. we have below zero temperatures for the next few days. >> coming up, was some police officers are in trouble a year after a manhunt. and a teenager after years on the run.

concludes, there is plenty of blame for the botched investigation into a deadly fight on division street, and the involvement of former mayor daley's nephew. ten years later, richard vanecko pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter, for throwing the punch that killed david koschman. a special prosecutor concluded

that the lead chicago police detective in the case tried to rush it to a grand jury, knowing any unproven charges would be thrown out, and the detective would be off the hot seat. and since no one could pick vanecko out of a lineup, the cook county state's attorney didn't want to charge vanecko. the attorney for koschman's mother says, it's time for the guilty to be punished. >> at the very least we have the most charitable thing to be said which is dereliction of duty. somebody needs to get on top of this. >> the report concluded, mayor daley did not try to influence the koschman investigation. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a chicago teenager pled guilty to a deadly "knockout game" attack. nicholas ayala will serve 27 years in prison for murder. ayala's friend anthony malcolm got 30 years last summer... another friend is still awaiting trial, for the brutal beating of 62-year-old delfino mora. mora was collecting cans to help support his family, when the three attackers confronted him in an alley, and punched and kicked him while recording the attack on cellphone video.

they stole 60 dollars, and left him there to die. three chicago firefighters were trapped in a southwest side fire, prompting a may day call. they were trapped briefly while searching for others inside the basement of a home in little village yesterday. those firefighters and three others, are being treated for minor burns. all are expected to make full recoveries. the chicago public school system is changing the test for student who want to enter the district's most selective schools. c-p-s has used the "i-sat" test to determine who gets in, and who doesn't. and lots of kids have spent time *studying for the "i-sat." but now, the school system will instead rely on a test called "n-w-e-a map." the first test under the new system is in may. police in napa, california have charged a woman and her boyfriend with killing the woman's young daughter, and stuffing her body into a suitcase. police say sara krueger and ryan scott warner killed three- year-old kayleigh slusher. the child had also been sexually assaulted. the suitcase with her body was placed in a freezer for three days, then laid on a bed before krueger and warner ran away.

the couple faces arraignment later this month... and life in prison if they're convicted. after she escaped from prison 37 years ago. judy lynn hayman pleaded guilty to larceny in 1976. she was about half way through her two year sentence, when she escaped from a prison in michigan. san diego police found her at an apartment yesterday. hayman had been living under different aliases and had a son. police say her adult son wasthey say he looked shocked to learn his mother was a wanted fugitive. >> archaeologists have found a prehistoric village about a dozen years old in miami. one the most significant prehistoric sites in the country. working for months to uncover evidence of an ancient native american village. board members say there's growing support to protect the site accrete a major exhibit around it. >> prime real estate. it looks like it's between resort spirit

let's talk about that picture of miami and now to us. it's 24 degrees at o'hare. this number is going to drop. we have low visibility. the snow is drifting and blowing. we have seen between two and 3 in. but that number is going up. some areas have seen as much as 4 in.. the new numbers will come in for a few hours. winter weather advisories in effect until noon. looking at the radar, you see this note continuing across the region as a low pressure system graces us. this is a big and powerful storm. it's bringing heavy snow into the northern communities. i will zoom out and you can see the center of circulation is down here moving through portions of southern illinois and into indiana. we are on the cold side. it's tapped into the gulf of mexico.

later today it will " go to the gulf of mexicamichigan. we're nt through with this yet. the snow goes back to the mississippi river. looking at the computer model, we clear out in the afternoon. by noon the western suburbs are clear. by 2:00 p.m. the south eastern and northwestern areas are clear no snow comes tonight. just cold temperatures. we have two-3 in. in some cases as high as 4 in. if you get that like the fact push into the afternoon. so far chicago is about 2 1/2 inches. will top out around four and a half for the entire event. 24 degrees at the lakefront. 24 at o'hare. when coming out the north between 10-20. that gives it windchill of only 11 at o'hare. 12 and lansing. temperatures will be falling through the day. high temperature has already

monday,stocks bounced back tuesday the dow gained 72 points. the nasdaq rose 34 and the s-and-p climbed 13 points. the amount of interest the u-s pays on its debt each year may quadruple over the next decade... the congressional budget office projects the u-s will owe 233- billion-dollars this year on interest alone. by 2024, that number expects to reach 880-billion-dollars. without a change in current policies, the c-b-o expects the

>> could morning. or not done with this stuff yet. we have about 12 hours left of the snow. but the damage in most cases is done. this is michigan ave. typically this time of the day you can see the road. but not so much. this is one of the better roads across the region. we will show you some worse looking roads in a moment. looking at the radar, the snow is dominating the area. you'll have drifting and blowing snow. wind gusts up to 20. snow is heaviest around morris and kankakee. but the entire region is seen snow. it will begin to taper off from west to east around lunchtime. i think by noon west of chicago it is dry. but in northwest indiana we have lake affect pushes about 2:00 p.m.. more snow. the two-4 in. tops. brainstorm total to 3 in..

we are expecting about 3 in.. i think the numbers are a bit high. we could be closer to 1-3. about halfway through we are at 20 valparaiso. when shall will be an issue tonight. right now it's above zero. but will stay there through the day tomorrow. 19 degrees is the temperature by 5:00. - 3 is the low tonight. it will be called thursday high temperature of 9. 80-94 has without conditions. the entire stretch is bad. it looks like we still have a slide off accident at klein. the eisenhower at wolf, it's hard to see the road. blowing and snowy conditions there. snow-covered roads and slick conditions. and number of slides on the eisenhower. all the accidents have been cleared.

but the airports are already canceling a ton of flights. midway is close to 30. this is in advance of all the snow coming down. just try to be proactive there. we're joined on the phone by the illinois state police. >> can you give us a quick description of the roads? >> right now the roads are covered with snow. poor visibility, slick road conditions and blowing wind. >> of we were looking at totaling up the damage. 10 damaged cars, two people injured. when people are heading out, what are the rules? we're telling people to give themselves at least twice the amount of time. >> i would say slow down. even though the speed limit is 55 that doesn't mean you should do that. be reasonable with the speech. slowdown. try not to

of course being so close to the lake, it is still covered again. this shows how quickly these roads can turn from good to bad. the snowplows come through and five minutes later the roads are covered in snow again. we have been seeing that situation out here. we have seen the plows out. they are working. they're saying that about 200 snowplows on the roads. they're focused on the main roads and lake shore drive to make sure that people are able to get where they are going. this will be later in the day when they will start focusing on the side streets. we have some video we're just hearing about how this is all the expressway's. this is 55 this morning. we saw a van in the ditch on the inbounds stevenson. workers had to hook up a cable to pull them back upon to the expressway.

fortunately, no one was injured. we've had multiples an ounce on 55 through the morning. down by the bling brokerage jolliet area. specifically between webber road and one to six and 80. if you come back out alive, we are now into an open portion where there are no buildings or anything blocking and you can see the wind blowing. obviously as get closer to the city we expect to seek more traffic and that's where it could get difficult. we saw a car spin out. you need to slow down because it's hard to tell when there is black eyes under the roads. and my driver says it's been pretty difficult. have you had a hard time? >> take your time and drive slow. some people are just going way too fast. >> he is saying hold on to the steering wheel keep your eye on

david koschman concludes, a lead police detective and a prosecutor bear some blame for the early failure to *charge vanecko. but the report says, vanecko's uncle, then-mayor richard daley, exerted *no political pressure to protect his nephew. vanecko pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter last friday. jury instructions in the nato three trial will be finalized today, before closing arguments tomorrow. yesterday the defense portrayed the defendants as drunk, pot smoking slackers who were not that serious about their cause. they say undercover police officers drove them to making molotv cocktails before the nato summit. the judge denied the defense's request to toss the terrorism charges. mayor emanuel will ask the chicago city council to regulate ride-sharing companies. currently, people can offer those services, and charge less than taxicabs, without offering

now we have visibility of eight tenths of a mile. only 1 mi. for bartlett. i think we have a shot of this. michigan ave. visibility of around 1 mi.. this is one of the roads that cleared up nicely. you will find much more snow-covered roads early today. they did a good job on michigan avenue but getting on the expressway, drifting and blowing snow is hard to catch up with. the roads will be bad to the morning. getting clear by the time to get home today. taking a look at the radar. this system, it's a huge system. it's basically hitting the entire eastern half of the u.s.. it's coming from the south. generally it has come from the north. the brought to the cold air but not the snow. the snow is coming from the tap in the gulf of mexico. this snow will come out of the area by noon. just to the

the sochi games start friday... yesterday, russia rehearsed the opening ceremony, complete with fireworks. the security of athletes and spectators remains a big concern, amid threats of terrorist attacks. and some of the *hotels in sochi still aren't ready for the influx of visitors. chicago tribune reporter stacy st. clair was told she had to wait for running water at *her hotel. >> i waited for the water. when it came back on two hours later, i guess the color was more like apple juice is probably the best description. i filled up to glacis and took a picture and put out on twitter for everyone to see. >> russia spent more than 50- billion dollars on these games... the most expensive ever. let's go over to demetrius and you guys have the trust the tool? >> it's ours no meter.

connected to the drugs found in philip seymour hoffman's apartment were arrested late last night. law enforcement led a raid and arrested three men and one woman. police recovered 350 bags or envelopes which may be used to contain heroin. hoffman was found dead in his fourth-floor manhattan apartment on sunday.
