a five-day-old baby has been missing for more than 24 hours, after his mother found his bassinet empty. deliberations resume today in the nato 3 terrorism case after jurors were sent home late last night. and a look at how the u-s will respond to a potential terror attack on the olympics in sochi. good morning. i'm dan ponce. and i'm erin mcelroy. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. several schools are opening late. you'll see them at the bottom of your screen. those stories are just ahead this half-hour. but first, demetrius ivory has a check of our weather. >> generally for good reason they're openly. we do have a wind chill of 53 in effect until 11:00 a.m.. when chilled will be as low as minus 30. once it gets a low your talk about frostbite after 30 minutes. temperatures

will last. it is friday. things can get harry quickly but right now we of these travel times across the board. and the construction will be slowing things down. more of its coming up. >>there was a fire in a high rise last night. this was on lake shore drive, near belmont. the fire started in the basement, and the smoke rose up through elevator shafts to the upper floors. firefighters helped several people evacuate and put them on warming buses. no one was injured. the fire was contained to a basement storage area. the cause is under investigation. the chicago fire department says a new mother handed over her healthy newborn to firefighters at a fire station on the city's far northwest side. it happened last night at the fire house near cumberland and foster avenue. the woman told firefighters she gave birth to the baby yesterday morning by herself and cared for the infant all day before handing it over. under the illinois safe haven law- it is legal for babies younger than thirty days old to be handed over hospitals, police stations and fire houses - no questions asked.

police and the f-b-i continued their search overnight for a missing six-day-old baby who was kidnapped just feet away from his sleeping parents. kayden powell was discovered missing from a home in beloit, wisconsin at 4:30 yesterday morning. his mother, 18-year-old brianna marshall told police she woke up to find the newborn gone from the bassinet next to her bed. marshall and the baby's father, bruce powell, have been cooperating with police. relatives say kristen smith showed up at the family's home several days ago, claiming to be marshall's step-sister and said kayden's parents and the baby were going to move with her to colorado. smith was arrested at an iowa gas station yesterday on an unrelated warrant out of texas. baby clothes were found in her car but no kayden. >> when she pulled out of town that they be one with her. >> we're trying with every resource to unite the family. >> police say smith is not a

suspect. the baby's parents confirmed with police that they were planning to move to colorado. day one of jury deliberations in the nato three trial ended without a verdict. jurors will meet again this morning. jared chase, brent betterly, and brian church are all charged in the first terrorism case by cook county prosecutors. they're accused of planning attacks while protesting the nato summit in 2012. the prosecution's case rests on recordings obtained by two undercover police officers who were with the defendants. but the defense says the defendants were all talk, until the officers talked them into making molotov cocktails. >> and over use of fear in this country and i think it's a dangerous statute to a turnaround. i think it should be deserved for most serious people. >> in order to reach a guilty verdict, jurors must find that the nato three acted with the intent to intimidate a significant portion of the city. airline passengers on flights from america to russia are now barred, for the moment, from carrying liquids, gels,

aerosols or powders onto planes. they'll have to be checked, with regular luggage. that's the latest t-s-a directive, in response to a new terror threat connected to the olympic games. in sochi, american intelligence and security officials are on high alert, with an extensive plan to evacuate u.s. athletes and visitors in the event there *is a terrorist attack. but the first responsibility lies with russia itself. >> if we have to extract our citizens we will be able to do it. >> this is russian sovereign territory. international and cooperation will be critical. >> in the meantime, security agents will accompany every american athlete to the olympic venues. an american military warships and planes will stand by, in the event an evacuation is ordered. if you logged onto google yesterday, you noticed that the site's daily doodle depicted olympic athletes in a rainbow of color. it was google's way of showing

solidarity with gay rights activists, and a subtle swipe at russia's record on gays. the page includes the quote, "every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind." we are now getting a look at the gunman who killed a 17-year old outside a mcdonald's restaurant on chicago north side earlier this week. the surveillance video was taken at a pizza restaurant... next to mcdonald's. it shows the victim, markeyo carr, walking with friends wednesday afternoon on north clark street, with the killer following behind them. the suspect was wearing a mask - just before he shot at the group. three other teens were also shot and injured. carr's sister says her brother was not a gang member. she says he was a swimmer at amundsen high school who received high grades, and wanted to join the marines one day. >> he was the heart of our family. he kept our family going. >> anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact chicago police.

bensenville police are offering a 10-thousand dollar reward for help catching the killers of a store clerk. hussein saghir was shot as he and his brother left sam's tobacco and food mart january 19th. surveillance images show one offender is wearing a maroon hoodie with the abercrombie logo. the other, wearing a black hoodie. police say both men are black... 17 to 22 years old... 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-5... and clean shaven. the getaway car is similar to this, a light-colored ford windstar. if you have any information, please call the police. a stolen 300 year old violin has been found in good condition. this violin, which is worth five million dollars, is now at milwaukee police headquarters. it was taken from northwestern lecturer frank almond. he was attacked with a stun gun after a concert in milwaukee more than a week ago. police arrested three people monday, but charges are pending. investigators say they found the violin in one of their apartments. the price of policing is getting

high again. the chicago sun-times reports, the chicago police department spent more than a hundred million dollars on officer overtime last year. some officers collected more than 78 thousand dollars in o.t.... that's even more than their regular salaries. some aldermen argue, officers may burn out because of the heavy reliance on overtime instead of new hiring. mayor emanuel says it's cheaper to pay o.t., than to add more officers to the payroll. u-i-c's faculty union is ready to go on strike. the union says its members will not work february 18-th and 19- th if contract negotiations are not more urgent or productive. this affects most of the school's full time tenured and non-tenured faculty. they would not teach, hold office hours, or perform other duties during the work stoppage. u-i-c says progress has been made, but it isn't commenting on the threat of a strike. com ed customers who refuse to have smart meters installed will now face a monthly fee. the illinois commerce commission have approved a monthly charge of 21-dollars and 53 cents for customers who do not allow the utility to install the new meters. com ed is currently upgrading to the new meters, which transmit usage information electronically and eliminate the need for meter readers. comed had argued for a high monthly fee to cover the cost of meter readers for older meters but the i-c-c turned that

down. chicago public transit has actually *benefitted from the sluggish economy of the past five years. new numbers show, ridership on the c-t-a more than three and a half percent in that period. but *suburban ridership was *down. both metra and pace reported ridership declines of more than six percent, overall, ridership on local transit is now at its highest since 1990. the snow is off chicago streets, but the bitter cold is here to stay. the city's main streets are clean, but the side streets are a bit harder to navigate on. plows came through, but now parked cars are surrounded by mounds of ice. not only is the snow sticking around for a while, but more could be on the way this weekend. >> just waiting for the spring to roll in like a white knight on a horse. >> i can do with the smell >> i can't deal with the snow. >> and just crime right now. but

there's been an apparent murder-suicide in defiance, ohio. four people are dead. the victims' bodies were discovered last night. police say 68-year-old robert garza senior shot his wife, daughter and granddaughter to death, before turning the gun on himself. investigators are trying to dermine his motive. a major cleanup and containment effort is underway in north carolina, after thousands of tons of coal ash leaked from a power plant. it happened about 40 miles north of greensboro. a stormwater pipe ruptured at a duke energy facility. and out spilled enough goop to fill 30 olympic-sized swimming pools. the leak has been plugged, for now. so far, north carolina officials haven't issued any warnings about the water supply. the recent security breach at target has been traced to a

small contractor near pittsburgh. the refrigeration vendor, fazio mechanical services, says hackers got access to target's computers through their network using a "data connection" used for electronic billing. fazio has worked with target since 2006 - installing refrigerators in stores. they have direct access to target's computer system. investigators believe that is how hackers got access to debit and credit card information for forty million customers. a school's attempt to celebrate black history month included some racial stereotypes. students at a high school in california were preparing a special menu for february. it included fried chicken, corn bread and watermelon. administrators didn't know about it, until it was announced over the loudspeaker. the menu was not planned by faculty, but by students in the black student union club. some students thought the idea was funny, but their parents didn't. >> they thought it was a very clever way of celebrating black history month. it was a simple and naive intent. >> there has been the impression that all black people eat this

kind of food which of course is all spirit >>school officials apologized and are planning other events that do not include that menu. school officials in hawaii promise to step up food inspections after a student found a snail in his lunch. the snail was found in a salad wednesday. the school's principal says the lettuce was supplied by a local vendor and cafeteria workers had properly washed the lettuce but they are noticing more snails than usual in recent days. health officials are concerned because snails can contain parasites that attack the nervous system. are the related to the weather so now? with moisture or something? >> snow will kill them or the salt will. barry ago. it's all life and death. so part of the same cycle. >> you are getting deep over there. >> today, when joe advisory until 11:00 a.m.. wind close to 30 below in some areas. that will be out to the west. you will have to certainly bundle up

this morning at the nato three trial. the defendants are charged with plotting terrorist attacks while protesting during the nato summit. prosecutors say police caught them with molotov cocktails. the defense says the defendants were usually high or drunk, but not dangerous terrorists. the shooting that left a 17- year-old boy dead outside a north side mcdonald's restaurant was caught on surveillance video. the video shows the victim, markeyo carr, walking with friends wednesday afternoon on north clark street, as the masked shooter pulled out a gun and fired several shots. three other teens were also shot and injured. no arrests have been made and police hope the video will lead to the gunman. u-i-c's faculty could go on strike for two days. their union says full time faculty will not work february 18-th and 19-th if contract negotiations are not more productive. the university says progress has been made, but it isn't commenting on the threat of a strike. airline passengers on flights from america to russia are now barred, for the moment, from carrying liquids, gels, aerosols or powders onto planes. they'll have to be checked,

outrage, when he said some visitors were recorded, turning on their showers and leaving the water running all day. it's the latest in a series of unflattering revelations that already include yellow water in at least one hotel. then there's *this remarkable feat of engineering... a toilet seat, installed backwards. that makes it a little tricky. >>the taliban is openly bragging about its latest battlefield capture. here's their new prisoner... a military dog. the taliban says the animal was captured after a long firefight with coalition forces in late december. in a video of the capture, a taliban spokesman claimed the dog carried the rank of colonel, and was outfitted with high-tech electronics. the dog was reportedly attached to a british special forces unit. a witness who helped convict rod blagojevich of corruption, may have lied under oath in a separate trial. rajinder bedi testified about a meeting in which he allegedly offered the blagojevich campaign more than a million dollars to appoint jesse jackson junior to the senate. bedi was involved in a separate kickback scheme involving political fundraiser

raghuveer nayak . nyack's lawyers say bedi lied during nyack's sentencing hearing. blagojevich's lawyers may try to use the accusation as evidence that bedi may have lied at the *blagojevich trial as well. a proposal to continue long- term unemployment benefits failed in the senate. the plan needed 60 votes to move forward. it only got 58, despite support from some republicans. the measure called for extending long-term jobless benefits that expired in december for three months. bipartisan negotiators have worked for several weeks to reach an agreement... but they haven't been able to bridge their differences. the white house says its time to move forward on immigration reform. some republicans say they're not budging--because they don't trust the president. >> we are going to continue to discuss this issue. but i think the president will have to demonstrate to the american people and to my colleagues that he can be trusted to enforce the law as it is written.

>> democrats and republicans have been facing off on the issue for awhile. the democratic controlled senate * passed* a bill that the republicans let stall in the house. they say they want president obama to deal with each reform issue and not try to lump everything together. boehner says they will not bow to pressure and accept anything less. colleges nationwide bragged about their new recruits during national signing day this week. but one school in tennessee signed a player it doesn't expect to see for quite some time. lipscomb university baseball just signed brooks russell. he's only five years old. but he's already surprising doctors who thought he would never walk again. brooks was born with a benign brain tumor that paralyzed him for several weeks.. but now he's a baseball player, with a college team waiting for him down the road. we just felt like it would be a great thing to add him to our family. >> he super excited. he probably will talk about it for a long time. >>brooks signed his letter of

leaking a recording of a phone call by a top diplomat who used an f-bomb to discuss allies. the u-s does not dispute that u-s assistant secretary of state victoria nuland was heard talking to another u-s diplomat and voicing her frustrations with european union officials, she said "f" - the e-u. nuland has since apologized but now senior u.s. officials say they suspect russia intercepted

the phone conversation and released it publicly. white house officials say other countries also spy on diplomats and intercept phone conversations. no comment from russian officials. a woman got quite a nasty surprise when she opened a piece of junk mail from bank of america. lisa mc-intyre says, a credit card offer arrived, addressed to "lisa is a slut mc-intyre." i didn't see that one coming. bank of america has apologized. it says the offending letter originated at the "gold key international honor society," which was jointly marketing the card with the bank. that is one society you do not want to belong to ladies. a nasa mission has spotted a new crater on mars the crater is 100 feet wide and shaped like a starburst. it was created after a small space rock slammed into the planet and exploded sometime between 2010 and 20-12 the images were taken last november, but not released until this week. nasa says around 250 new impact craters have appeared on mars in the last twenty years.

and check this out ... nasa releases the first-ever view of the earth from the surface of mars. this picture was taken by the rover curiosity last month... about 80 minutes after sunset on january 31-st. researchers snapped the shot using the rover's mast camera. can you even see it? that era with the big earth next to it. a big sign of earth. i think you can just make it out. >> you need some 3-d for that. >> maybe it's just our monitor. >>jay leno hosted his last tonight show last night. >> i don't like good buys. but nbc does. but i don't. tonight is our last show for real. i don't need to get fired three times. i get the hint. >>leno is done with late night t-v after 22 years.
