on the jane addams cancelled early this morning. he should get there without any issues. >>we are closing in on the record of most days with a low temperature below zero. tonya francisco is *live at the metra station in evanston. >> so far we have had 19 of these below zero days. six more and would tie a record from 1885. that is a real concern for commuters, especially writers on metra who've been frustrated by the delays this year. many of them have to wait out in the freezing cold. metra blames it on switching problems caused by the snow, high wind and the real culprit appears to be an antiquated switching system. the seven of the 11 realigns have trains that run on switches

got out of reach. divers from the chicago fire department's marine unit found her barefoot about 100 feet out on the ice and brought her back to shore. she was checked out at a hospital and appeared to be o-k. the police chief in gary says mother nature did what 246 police officers haven't been able to do. the cold weather contributed to a murder rate of zero in northwest indiana in the month of january. during a normal january, the area averages five killings. but the brutal cold and snow kept people in their homes so much last month, there were no disputes that escalated to deadly violence. there's a new terror warning from south america. american citizens in guyana are being warned not to fly out of the country on caribbean airlines for the next few days. intelligence sources picked up chatter that suggested there may be an attack against a flight this week. the warning is in effect through wednesday. the first openly gay player may be drafted by the n-f-l. missouri defensive end michael sam publicly revealed that he is gay. sam was an all-american lineman at missouri.

he told his college teammates last fall and suffered no backlash ... and the information never leaked. sam is projected by n-f-l scouts to land in the middle of the draft, possibly as high as the third round. he says he wants the team that drafts him to know he's gay, and a hard worker. jamie anderson of team u-s-a picked up a gold medal in ladies slopestyle snowboarding, yesterday. team u-s-a also picked up a bronze in team figure skating. taking a look at the medal count... norway leads with 7 medals -- 2 are gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze. the netherlands follows with 4 medals -- 2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze. and the u-s is currently in third place with 2 gold and 2 bronze medals. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a teenager was shot to death while shoveling snow on the near west side. the body of 17-year-old ronald hayes was discovered yesterday afternoon by his mother, on a sidewalk near his home in the 13- hundred block of west hastings. he'd been shot in the head. hayes was a senior at banner academy west high school.

there's no word yet on who shot him, or why. two men were killed when a car went off the highway and hit a light pole. it happened on i-90, at barrington road, yesterday morning. a third person in the car was slightly injured. the car wound up on the left shoulder of the eastbound lanes. the cause of the crash is under investigation. while emergency crews were there, another car hit two state police squad cars. that driver suffered minor injuries, but no one else was hurt. people in downers grove got a chance to hear most of the republicans who want to be governor. the indian american republican organization sponsored a candidates forum. bruce rauner didn't attend. but state treasurer dan rutherford and senators kirk dillard and bill brady did. former mayor daley is out of the hospital after being checked out for stroke like symptoms. daley walked out of northwestern memorial yesterday with his son patrick. he waved to reporters but did not stop to talk. daley was hospitalized for eight days after he returned from a business tip in arizona. a former chicago police officer, turned criminal, goes on trial today for plotting to murder a if suburban businessman. steve mandell has been linked

to as many as eight previous murders. prosecutors say he hatched a plot to kidnap a wealthy man, torture him to extort money and real estate, then kill him and cut up his body. he was arrested in 2012, before he could carry out the plot. mandell will stand trial for kidnapping conspiracy, attempted extortion, and murder- for-hire. a key figure in the rod blagojevich corruption trial faces sentencing today in a separate case. raguveer nayak was once named as the man who offered to raise money for blagojevich's campaign for governor, if he appointed jesse jackson junior to the u.s. senate. he was never charged. but he *was charged, and convicted, in a scheme to pay doctors for referrals to his chain of outpatient surgery centers. prosecutors are asking for a seven-year prison sentence for nayak. negotiations are set to continue, to avoid a teachers strike in mount prospect. the teachers union for mount prospect elementary district 57 authorized a strike last month. the union and the school board are discussing salaries, evaluations, and lay-offs. both sides say progress was

made at yesterday's talks. they'll meet again tonight and tomorrow night if necessary. a lot more bicycles are being stolen in chicago. there were more than 11-hundred bikes stolen last year, about five percent more than the year before. the statistics come from the chicago stolen bike registry, which tracks data and posts them on the website *the chain link-dot-org.* the chicago police department doesn't keep separate numbers for bicycle rip-offs. they are just categorized under general thefts. only five percent of the stolen bikes were locked with u- shaped locks looped through the front wheel and frame of the bikes. if you haven't gone already, there are plenty of "sweet rides" on display at this year's chicago auto show. the early morning news team was there for the big opening on friday night. this event raised two and a half million dollars for 18- chicago-area charities. it's the most money that's *ever been raised for the opening night gala. the auto show runs through next monday. coming up ... four fraternity brothers are killed in a wrong-

a wrong-way driver is charged in a crash that killed six people. it happened yesterday morning on a highway in diamond bar, california. police say it appears 21-year- old olivia culbreath had been drinking, when she drove her chevy camaro the wrong way down the highway, and crashed into two oncoming vehicles. culbreath broke a leg in the crash. when she heals, she'll stand trial. a driver, going the wrong way down interstate 275, hit another car head-on, early yesterday morning. the wrong-way car burst into flames upon impact. the driver was burned beyond recognition. four young men in the other vehicle also died. they were all fraternity brothers at the university of south florida. a student from brigham young

university died after being caught in an avalanche. it happened in american fork canyon, near salt lake city. ashleigh cox was snow-shoeing in the area with five others saturday when the wall of snow carried her to a nearby creek. say she was buried face-down for about 40 minutes before she was pulled out. there have been hundreds of avalanches in the area over the past two days. the federal government is making some major changes that involve same sex marriages. starting today, those couples will be recognized by federal law, even in states where their marriage isn't legal. andrew spencer has more. >> for those fighting for same- sex marriages to be recognized by the government, it's one more step toward equality. >> as was true during the civil rights movement, the state involved in this generation's struggles for equality could not be higher. >> and human rights campaign in dallas, the head of the u.s. department of justice announced his intention to issue the memo: for a spin in recognition of same-sex marriage and federal legal matters.

she didn't notice the picture until the next day. nothing was taken from the house. the woman says she didn't know the man, but a neighbor says he looks familiar. no arrests have been made. retirement just doesn't sit well with some people. morris miller celebrated his 100th birthday at his job ... a mcdonald's in needham, massachusetts. morris started working there 25 years ago when he was 75. his duties mostly include drinking coffee and schmoozing with the customers ... something he does very well. >> at my age, we don't remember anything. >> he is funny. he makes us all laugh. >> have a good day. >>morris was named employee of the year and received a nice bonus check during the party. he is socially active. that's the key as to get older. >> congratulations to him. >> it's called again today. it's been such a cold winter. this

at long last the bulls step in their final west coast trip of the season is over. once again the show what it's all about. the trip ended yesterday against the lakers. will the results were not exactly earth shattering, we consider what they accomplished and with whom they accomplished it, you have to be impressed. the lakers on sunday, no dereks rose, no boozer but they did have noah. and first quarter, he ripped off texases. barely challenged in this game, gibson was a huge reason. down on the baseline, using the rim for protection, a watered-down team with lots of injuries but they never let them feel like they had the chance. leading the way, noah on the way to a 20.13 rebound effort. a

below zero. >> tonya joins us in evanston. you can testify to how cold it is. >> the good thing is i know we are under a windshield advisory but there is no wind right now. back to the record we have been talking about. the record is 25 below the zero blows. right now if we have seven more, 2014 will own a new record. this is one record people who work out in the cold like us or even people who just happen to be out for a short period of time are hoping we do not break. that includes the rail agency they have had a rough winter. numerous delays and cancellations have been blamed on switching problems caused by the snow, wind and subzero temperatures. the real culprit according to the sometimes appears to be an 82 year-old hand operated machine.

ice. they were able to bring her back to shore. shoes checked out at a hospital and appears to be ok. >> a teenager shot to death while shoveling snow. the body was discovered yesterday afternoon by his mother on the sidewalk near his home in the 1300 block of west tastings. he had been shot in the head. he is a senior. no word on who shot him or why. >>the village of robbins has set up an assistance fund for a 14-year-old boy who witnessed his stepfather murdering his two siblings and his mother last week. michael worsham killed his wife michell ollie and their children trisha and roe. then worsham died of a heart attack. the 14-year-old and a nephew managed to escape. the fund will help pay the funeral expenses, and raise money for the boy's education. former mayor richard daley is out of the hospital after eight days of tests and observation. he was taken to northwestern memorial after he suffered stroke-like symptoms while on a business trip. hospital and waved to reporters, but didn't comment. a former chicago police officer, turned criminal, goes

fire in the past week, as relief workers tried to deliver emergency food and water to the besieged city of homs. the attacks came, despite a cease-fire agreement. when french president francois hollande visits the white house this week, he won't have a first lady at his side. he just broke up with his long- time partner, after an affair with a younger woman. the white house had already printed up the announcement of the state visit with *both names on it. instead, president obama will host hollande *solo, tomorrow evening. immigration reform has stalled in washington, and that has one republican senator concerned about his party. kentucky senator rand paul says the republican party needs to have a better attitude about immigration, before it loses more elections. >> texas will be a democrat state in 10 years if you don't change. that means we of all. don't give up on what we believe in the we need to be a more welcoming party. >> a simple solution. enact a law this year but simply not let it actually start until 2017. after the president's term is

over. >>last week, house speaker john boehner said it would be hard to pass immigration reform because republicans didn't trust the president to enforce the law. during the state of the union, the president said he would use executive powers to move forward on issues, when congress doesn't act. new jersey's largest newspaper is taking back its endorsement of governor chris christie. that announcement comes one month after christie said he was not involved in the washington bridge scandal. the christie administration is being investigated over whether the bridge was partly closed down over politics. the star ledger's editorial board now says that it "blew it," when it endorsed christie before he was re-elected. it says the endorsement came down to two flawed candidates. two prominent illinois it was a fairly, setting from his other rope walking. he previously was crossed never falls and part of the grand canyon. he did have to deal with
