sunshine today. today's high temperature is 22 degrees below average. here we are right now at two degrees at the lakefront. as a travel to the west is extremely cold. this is not the wind chill. this is the current temperature. -19 in kankakee. the good news is, it is not windy. wind chill is not as low as it could be carried -324 aurora. in kankakee its -19 and closer to zero as a travel closer to the lake. we are dry and we stayed dry today. a weak system comes through tomorrow jumping our temperatures and to bring in the chance of rain and snow wednesday into thursday. today we make 12 degrees. 7 degrees by 9:00 p.m.. tomorrow we mig-23. mostly cloudy. thursday we're mostly cloudy high temperature of 33.

>> things are looking good. no accidents yet. the very smooth ride in northwest indiana. a few pockets of overnight construction. but none seemed to be causing any big delays. another update in a few minutes. >>a man tried to rob an off-duty cook county sheriff's sergeant. instead of getting money, he was shot and killed. it happened last night in the pullman neighborhood, at 103-rd and cottage grove. three people approached the officer at a gas station, across the street from gately stadium. when they demanded his wallet, he handed it over. but then, one of them pointed a gun at him. so he pulled his own gun and shot the man in the head. the other men ran away. no names yet. metra's new c-e-o spent his day defending metra's performance during this harsh winter. tonya francisco is *live at metra's western avenue stop with more. >> good morning. in his own words, the new ceo says it has

been a rough three years for the commuter agency. i want to show you something interesting that we can only show you at this time. over my shoulder and you can see the fires burning. these are some of the problems that have led to the issues. the fires are burning on the rails to keep the switch is going. the ceos said yesterday if-touched this is only one that switching system but if one train gets backed up it can lead to 10 or 20, even 40 trains getting out of whack. but this is in interesting picture of these fires burning. yesterday we heard they are going to work on rebuilding the trust in the winter weary trail system. along with the other chiefs of the are tsa and cta are preparing to go before a lawmakers. the chief

operating officer before being named ceo was the focus of questioning about the recent performance during the january polar vortexes that crippled the system, canceling trains and limiting the others to a dismal 30% on-time performance. lawmakers expressed outrage on behalf of their writers about the poor performance and lack of communication. >> the perception is that metra is not what it was and there are some that i think it can't be what it was again. when you are dealing with this type of equipment you will have challenges. we are trying to work through those challenges and make it so it's a more reliable service. >> afterwards, the complaint that all he offered was little in the way of ideas of improving it but he did promise that he would improve the performance from an average 85% word is right now to at the very least,

95. on another note, the board is going to make its new announcement about its new chairman today. back to you. >>chicago's department of family and support services has extended hours at its six community centers, which are serving as warming shelters during this cold weather. and the lines outside places for the homeless to go, like catholic charities, are getting longer. charities say demand for food and warm clothing has doubled. but contributions are not keeping pace. the city's warming centers will be open today from 9 a-m to 8 p-m. two weeks after a winter storm brought atlanta to a standstill, officials there are preparing for another wintery blast. andrew spencer has more. >> stories of the atlantic area two weeks ago of commuters stuck in traffic for 20 hours. people left with no option but to a man in their car. people stranded and slipping on the floor of local businesses. this time many

atlanta unless absolutely necessary. stick to the interest a loop around the city. georgia power is set up their storm center preparing the worst and hoping the best. some breaking news ... we are just learning that two civilian contractors killed in a suicide bombing in eastern afghanistan this week were americans. the u-s embassy in kabul confirmed the deaths this morning. he crashed head-on into the contractors to suv. the contractors were working on prison affairs. we'll bring you more information as it becomes available. a former employee of state treasurer and candidate for governor dan rutherford is now suing him for sexual harassment. the federal lawsuit was filed by rutherford's former director of community affairs, edmund michalowski. it claims rutherford sexually harassed michalowski on several occasions, over two and a half years. the lawsuit accuses rutherford of "hitting on" him and touching him inappropriately. it also says michalowski was

forced to do campaign work, while on the job. last night, at a republican debate for governor, rutherford said his accuser is motivated by money. >> the allegations are absolutely false. they are from years ago. they're coming on the cusp of the election. early voting has started. i think this is all about illinois politics. >>a travel voucher filled out by referred thinks it's bruce rohner behind these allegations. he says that he did that because he was embarrassed. >> stories this morning. authorities are trying to trace a threatening e-mail that led devry university and the chamberlain college of nursing to close all of their campuses in the chicago area. devry officials say the email suggested there would be several explosions at unspecified locations.

officials found nothing suspicious at the schools. all devry and chamberlain locations will be open today. an illinois state trooper injured last month when a truck driver hit him has filed a lawsuit. trooper douglas balder is suing a prosecutor who drew heavy criticism in the david koschman murder case, has stepped down. an independent investigation concluded, darren o'brien improperly threw out the case against mayor daley's nephew, richard vanecko, after vanecko punched and killed koschman outside a bar on division street. last week, vanecko pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter. o'brien left the state's attorney's office in december, after 20 years there. a key figure in the rod blagojevich scandal is on his way to jail, for a completely separate crime. raghuveer nayak was convicted of bribing doctors to send their patients to his outpatient surgery centers. he got a two-year sentence. nayak was accused, but never charged, with offering to raise cash for governor blagojevich, if he appointed jesse jackson junior to the senate. julia mancuso won a bronze medal in women's super combined slalom. it's the fourth olympic medal of her career. no other u-s female alpine

racer has more than two, including lindsey vonn. a concert violinist returned to a concert to violinist returned to the stage with his multi- million dollar *stradivarius violin that was stolen and recovered. the 300-year old violin was stolen from concert violinist and northwestern lecturer, frank almond, after a performance in suburban milwaukee. the violin has been on loan to almond since 2008. two men are now charged with the robbery. >> a good morning. cold temperatures again. some areas have the coldest numbers of the season. as you look to the west, which find the numbers that are

an explosion at a ball bearings plant in southern new hampshire. it happened at 3-30, yesterday afternoon. a company spokesperson says none of the injuries appears to be life threatening. the factory makes bearing assemblies for airplanes, medical and high-tech industries. authorities are still investigating the cause of the blast, but it appears to be an industrial-related incident. we're now hearing the panicked 9-1-1 call from a woman in

wisconsin whose baby was kidnapped from his home last week. brianna marshall reported her son missing, and said her half- sister had been there, hours earlier... but she didn't make the connection. >> there was a knife lying next to my bed. there was no blood on that. i picked it up and then i threw it back down and looked over and the baby was gone. >>little kayden powell was found, wrapped in blankets, in a storage bin behind a gas station in iowa. he's o-k. half-sister kristen smith is jailed on kidnapping charges. she'll face a *federal trial, since she's accused of taking the baby across state lines. businesses, with 50 to 99 full- full-time employees now have until generate 2016 to buy health coverage. the original deadline was next january. larger companies have to offer coverage to 70 percent of full- time employees by next year and 95 percent the following year. the changes come after the law

defines what a worker is. some republicans say the mandate requires them to buy insurance should be delayed as well. >>indiana and nevada are going in different directions on the issue of gay marriage. a state senate committee in indiana passed a constitutional amendment that bans same sex marriage. voters wouldn't see it on a ballot for a few years, because indiana law requires constitutional amendments to be passed by two elected legislatures. nevada already bans gay marriage, but it won't defend it in court anymore. voters passed the ban twice, but an appeals court ruled it unconstitutional. the state's attorney general says the legal landscape has changed, and the arguments for the ban are no longer sustainable. most people put on their sunday best to go to church but that's not the case at one house of worship. at the white tail chapel the congregation worshipped the way god brought them into the world ... naked. but the pastor bears his soul-- >> he bears a lot more than

have been without one since last year. treasurer dan rutherford is fighting a sexual harassment lawsuit, five weeks away from the g-o-p primary for governor. in a federal lawsuit, former women's michalowski claims rutherford made unwanted sexual advances toward him several times in the past few years. the claims include comments and inappropriate touching. michalowski also says rutherford made him do campaign work on state time. last night, at a g-o-p debate, rutherford said nothing in the lawsuit is true. a travel voucher filled out by michalowski conflicts with the timing of one of the claims in the lawsuit. >> they are false. they are from years ago. they are coming on the cusp of an election. early voting has started. i think this is a stink about illinois politics. >> he believes the republican canada is behind the allegations.

a travel voucher filled out conflicts with the timing of one of the claims in the lawsuit. he says he did that because he was embarrassed. >>bruce rauner appearls to be the clear favorite for the republican nomination for governor. that's according to a new poll by the tribune and w-g-n. the poll questioned 600 registered voters who are likely to participate in the republican primary. rauner has 40-percent of the overall vote. bill brady is second with 20- percent. dan rutherford has 13 percent, kirk dillard has eleven percent, and 15-percent say they're undecided. rauner also has big leads in every demographic including gender, location, and income. the poll was taken last wednesday through saturday. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. an off-duty cook county sheriff's sergeant shot and killed a robber. it happened last night at 103- rd and cottage grove. three people approached the officer at a gas station. they demanded, and got, his wallet. but then, one of them pointed a gun at him. so he pulled his own gun and shot the man in the head. the other men ran away.

no names yet. authorities are trying to trace a threatening e-mail that led devry university and the chamberlain college of nursing to close their campuses in chicago, tinley park, and addison - yesterday. devry officials say the email suggested there would be several explosions at unspecified locations. officials found nothing suspicious at the schools. opening statements begin in the murder conspiracy trial of a former policeman. charged with plotting to kidnap a suburban businessman, torture him into giving him cash and real estate and then kill him. he was foiled before he could carry the job out. state senate president john cullerton says chicago's layoffs unless they agree to give up some benefits. the remarks come as the legislature once again prepares to negotiate pension reform for government workers, including c- p-s teachers. the schools' annual pension payment is expected to grow from 417 million dollars last year to more than 600 million dollars. cullerton says some of that money would have to come out of

classrooms, resulting in drastic teacher layoffs and bigger class sizes. medical marijuana shops in illinois would need at least 500 thousand dollars to open. that's according to the new proposed regulations. experts say the start-up costs will narrow down the number of applicants. but they warn that the expenses will be passed on to consumers. other regulations include fingerprinting and criminal background checks on owners, employees and patients. and 24-hour video surveillance that must be viewable online by state officials. a developing story. we're learning to civilian contractors killed in a suicide bombing in eastern afghanistan were american. the u.s. embassy confirmed this morning. suicide bomber crashed head on into the contractor's suv. they were working on prison affairs. more information as we get. the information comes from a

the white house is considering using a drug to kill someone overseas. the justice department is reviewing whether an attack with a new guidelines that were approved back in may. the guidelines a drone strikes and legal force can be used only outside of war zones to prevent or stop attacks against americans. >> investigators in new jersey want the helicopter records of governor chris christie. an aide to the governor was fired, for arranging a four-day traffic jam on the george washington bridge, to punish the mayor for fort lee for not *endorsing christie. christie says it was done without his knowledge or approval. but investigators are looking for any evidence that christie flew *over the bridge during the traffic tie-up. they say, such evidence would suggest, he *did know about it. chris christie comes to *chicago today. he'll deliver a lunch hour speech at the economic club of chicago. and he'll meet with some christie is chairman of the republican governors' association... and he's considered a likely candidate for president in 2016. a new book about toronto's

the half sister of julia roberts, nancy motes, was found dead at her home in los angeles

on sunday. the l-a county coroner's office says paramedics arrived at motes' home after she was found in her bathroom. motes was 37 years old and had a history of medical issues. an autopsy is scheduled for later today. former s-n-l star chris kattan is facing d-u-i charges. he crashed his mercedes-benz into a maintenance truck in a construction zone yesterday in los angeles. kattan was booked after failing a field sobriety test and was released on bail a few hours later. it is suspected he was under the influence of an unknown drug. a chemical test by police will help identify that drug. kattan suffered a bloody nose, but no construction workers were hurt. justin bieber's security cameras may hold all the evidence needed to prosecute him in the egging of his neighbor's home. the l-a county district attorney's office is still reviewing the case and can file it as either a felony, misdemeanor or reject it outright. yesterday, the d-a declined to comment on a time frame in determining the charges. this is bieber's third criminal case in less than three months. >> it's right of theiup there we
