>> it could lead to a landmark change in college sports. northwestern university football players tell the national labor relations board why they want to be represented by union. >> we welcome our viewers for watching us around the country. robert jordan as life in the loop with our top story. >> the implications from this are huge. some scholarships to and from northwestern university are complaining that they're no different from professional athletes. because of their efforts to bring in millions of dollars for the university. they say they have no control over their working conditions. the university on the other hand says the

scholarships are incentives to allow the students to come to the university. they say that they are students first and foremost. therefore they are saying that is why they're not eligible to unionize. the whole issue is before a labor examiner right now. who will decide if the athletes will be able to unionized or not. >> it is the beginning of the end. college athletes are going to be >> north boston university believes the players who have brought this petition are in fact students first and foremost and are not employees. >> it is the age-old struggle of workers' rights in this case student-athletes versus management. 85 members of the football team have signed cards that they are hoping to form a union. school

officials oppose the action saying the players are students and not the employees. therefore they are not eligible to unionize. >> can be an employee of the university and be a student. the football program takes time from these athletes that is what they are devoted to. the fact that there also students means they're not entitled to the protections of labor laws. >> it is the issue of the health consequences of football as a national issue. they should have a say. we just do not believe that is the proper way >> both sides are in front of the national labor relations board making their cases for and against union representation. the outcome could be monumental. opening the floodgates and drawing in schools everywhere. >> they are in essence professional athletes. they do the same thing is

>> the two main characters in this case on audio recordings and also some video recordings talking about muscling people out of the strip club business. as well as squeezing them for money. one of those characters in this case was also an informant for the fbi. chicago real-estate mogul and former banker with a checkered past of his own george michael took those recordings of steve mandel. a former chicago police officer and death row in may and changed his name from steve and manning. the two were discussing renting a store funda storefront. mandela's going to use it as a torture chamber with industrial cy sinks to drain his victims' blood. they decided it would pay about $750 a month. they would use a full name and credit report to get a

rented. they planned on stealing heat and electric. the two also discussing the best way to take over a number of strip clubs. mandel talked about torturing and murdering the people that were running them. reports also have the to discussing how fake cut the fake ids were. the attorneys have said all of this is just talk. he had no plans to actually murder anyone. his plan was to scam michaels out of money. >> a man and a teenager or wounded after a shooting near high-school. but people were walking near the intersection last night. a black mini van pulled up to the group and somebody inside opened fire. the victims ran to a nearby high school which was hosting a basketball game. a security guard

called police. a 20 year-old man was shot. the teenagers listed in critical condition. there is no one in custody. bonn has been set at $2.5 million for the man accused of murdering a store clerk. he admitted to being at sam's tobacco and food mart on january 19th. identified himself in this surveillance video. he is charged with armed robbery and first-degree murder of the clerk. a family member says he is not responsible. >> i believe he is innocent. i want to see the video myself. i'm trying to see the picture. >> police a bartlett was not the triggerman. they're looking for a second suspect. >> student at northwestern has filed a federal lawsuit claiming the university did not take appropriate action. she says the

professor got drunk and took her to his apartment. this didn't try to kill herself two days after the alleged attack. the losses as a disciplinary committee determines the professor should be fired. that never happened. northwestern will not comment on pending litigation. >> asking the city council to crack down on petroleum coke. the waste comes from the oil refinery process and as high in sulfur and carbon. it is believed to contribute to respiratory problems. the mayor wants to stop existing facilities that process or handled the material from expanding. >> we're bringing tough regulations and oversight to make it their bottom line is let's get out of chicago. >> back in december the mayor and attorney general announced the new

boston marathon bombing suspect will go to trial this fall. a federal judge says today jury selection began on november 3rd. accused of killing three people and wounding more than 260 others back on april 15th. also allegedly shot to death and mit police officer. authorities tracked him down in the backyard of the home. jurors are expected to begin deliberations this afternoon. the 47 year-old is charged with killing the 17 year-old jordan davis at a gas station in a jacksonville for the parking lot. davis and three friends
