some breaking news ... a shooting overnight at a senior citizen social club in northwest indiana. we are *live with an update. a suspect is in custody this morning in the attempted robbery of an off-duty sheriff's officer. and winter storms bring some of the southeast's biggest cities to a standstill. good morning. i'm dan ponce. and i'm erin mcelroy. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. demetrius ivory has a check of our weather. we have good news in our forecast? >> temperatures are starting to warm up. if you freeze and a few floors. >> i took the dog out and it was just it didn't need a hand warmer. >> it is an improvement. it has been almost two weeks since we made freezing. freezing is only 32. a typical high is warmer than that. woodbin colder than

>> a quick update on traffic. we have a road closures or about 83 the northwest highway gas of oil to central in place through the day. not seeing any accidents up there. no delays. it's a very quiet start. >>breaking news out of gary this morning, where several people were shot inside a club. tonya francisco is *live in gary. >> good morning. police are not releasing very much information about what happened last night. they have reports that as many as five people have been shocked including the gunman. this one took place at the safe and sound a senior citizens' social club at 1030 last night. it happened in the city of gary. none of the injuries are life- threatening. according to the post a raid by police back to

october of 2011, the owner of that club was charged with serving alcohol without a permit and provoke promoting professional gambling. at that 0.8 table and beer and liquor were taken. it's not clear if the owners still owns the club or what took place. still trying to get some information. once we have it we will bring you more. back to you. >>a 14 year old boy was killed during a drive-by shooting on the city's south side. it happened near 61-st and vernon last night. the boy was walking down the street, with two other people, when someone started shooting from a white van. the victim was shot in the head and died. he has not been identified yet. no one else was hurt, and no arrests have been made. more than four-thousand flights have been canceled, as a winter storm dumps more snow on the southeastern u-s, and bringing many cities to a standstill. andrew spencer reports the storms have also left more than half-a-million homes and businesses without electricity.

>> the clouds are out in north carolina but for a lot of stranded drivers it hasn't done much good. it urged people to stay home as the road conditions got worse. even first responders were having a hard time getting around slipping and sliding as a try to get the vehicle moving. as if the ice was not bad enough, the weight of ice and snow brought trees down into power lines and in some cases homes. >> hearing the tree cracked and watching it fall and landing on my daughter's room was very dramatic. >> utilities reported more than 600,000 homes and businesses have lost electricity across the southeast. >> i've been with the company for 15 years. never seen anything to this scale. talking to people older than me this is the biggest bid ever seen. >> as it moves into the north east, officials in washington had ordered all federal offices closed for thursday. meanwhile, crews week on standby hoping to

avoid the same problems the winter storms secreted in the south. >>a water main break on the city's north side caused some problems for residents in the north center neighborhood. water filled the streets near damen and cullom just after three yesterday afternoon. traffic in the area was rerouted as city crews worked through the night to dig up the main and fix it. with 65 men linked to attacks in afghanistan were set free. the u.s. on wanted them all tried in afghan court. the men pose a security threat to security. but the afghan government announced the men were released from a facility. it will further to strain relations as american troops compared prepare for their withdrawal by the end of the year. >> a suspect is in custody in a on security video. three teens confronted an off- duty cook county sheriff's sergeant monday at a far south side gas station. one of them pointed a gun, and

the sergeant gave up his wallet. then he drew his own weapon and killed the gunman, 16-year- old deonta mackey. the two others ran away... but a 17-year-old turned himself in, after seeing the surveillance video on t-v. no charges have been filed. this man is being held on bond for the murder of a store clerk, but police are still looking for the actual shooter. kenneth bardlett is charged with first degree murder. prosecutors say he admitted to trying to rob a convenience store in bensenville last month. but the other man in this security video shot and killed the clerk, hussein saghir. prosecutors say bardlett was on parole for a weapons charge. no details about the shooter were released. authorities say a counselor had sex with a foster child at least twice. kelvin perry is being held on bond for criminal sexual abuse and sexual assault. prosecutors say he met a 16 year old girl through a program for children where he worked. they say the two exchanged erotic text messages and phone messages, after she was placed in a foster home. police say one of the exchanges led to sex in perry's car outside the woodfield mall in

schaumburg last sunday. >> it is terrible that a person of trust and the authority is alleged to have committed a crime on a child that was seeking assistance. >>perry faces the same charges in palatine, for having sex with the girl at her foster parents' home. waukegan police say they're also investigating him. the children's program, where perry worked, placed him on unpaid leave. jurors heard testimony of an alleged plot by an ex-chicago police officer to muscle his way into the strip club business, by torturing and murdering a suburban businessman. government witness george michael, an ex-banker, described a plot to kidnap steve campbell of riverside, force him to hand over his holdings in a club, then kill him. secretly recorded tapes showed defendant steve mandell and michael discussing the plot to torture campbell at a storefront on west devon. >> i have to make a joke out of this. >> when police raided the storefront, they found sleeping

pills and a meat cleaver that prosecutors say was to be used to cut up campbell's body. the plot was foiled. mandell faces a long prison sentence if he's convicted. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. adults using computers in the orland park public library will still be allowed to access porn web sites. the library board met yesterday to discuss changes to the library policy. but board members rejected a plan to install filters on the library computers, saying it would impact first amendment rights. computers in the children's section do have filters preventing them from viewing inappropriate sites on the web. cook county sheriff tom dart wants the power to check the books of troubled police departments. he's asking the county board to let him be a suburb's inspector general, if it fails to file required audits and financial statements two years in a row. the request comes after a tribune report on corruption and police failures in towns, including harvey. the chicago park district plans to cut down several dozen old trees in lincoln park, because they're diseased. the 57 targeted trees line a walkway along the southern end

of the park, near the benjamin franklin monument. neighbors are upset about the plan, because 500 rare black- crowned night herons chose the trees as their main breeding ground in illinois. replacements will be planted in the fall. this upcoming baseball season will be the last for the yankees' derek jeter, who announced he's retiring. jeter made that announcement on his facebook page yesterday. he has played in the majors for 19 seasons, and all of them with the yankees. he's won five world series championships, and is ninth in the all-time hitting list. but injuries took their toll and caused jeter to only play 17 games last year. jeter turns 40 in june. at the winter olympics in sochi -- it's snowboarding gold for kaitlyn farrington, and bronze for kelly clark on the halfpipe. the u-s men's hockey team plays slovokia this morning. and taking a look at the medal count... norway still holds the lead with 12. canada and the netherlands have ten. the u-s is tied with russia for nine medals. and germany has eight medals, despite having the most golds -- six.

you can check out a ten-foot tall ice sculpture replica of olympian jason brown in highland park's port clinton square... at least until the weather warms up. the u-s figure skater graduated last year from highland park high school. meanwhile, you can attend a *free cheering party at centennial ice arena in highland park tomorrow morning. that's where jason got his start. the party starts at nine for anyone who wants to watch jason skate *live . some of us may be fed up with the snow, but one family is making the most of it. they've built an igloo that's big enough to live in. this is in harmon, illinois, which is near dixon. wayne larson says it all started with a seven-foot snow drift in his back yard. he wanted to make something fun for his grandkids. so he spent about ten hours digging out the snow. now it's big enough for several people and it even has a fire place ... and a spot for an emergency stash of popsicles. >> there's a fire in side! and popsicle! >> well done. >> that is awesome. what have

have been rescued from a slope in oregon, a day after they and six companions were buried by an avalanche. two other skiers were killed. the latest survivors, a man and a woman, had to be rescued on foot, because the weather wouldn't permit a *helicopter

rescue. the woman broke both legs and injured a shoulder. the man has a broken thigh bone. a roller coaster full of people got stuck, shortly after it started. this happened on the "cheetah hunt" roller coaster at busch gardens in tampa. they were stuck there for over three hours, and it was raining. firefighters used a bucket truck to rescue 16 people. no one was hurt. the park is investigating what caused the ride to stop. president obama signed an executive order hiking the minimum wage for federal government employees. among those will benefit, are janitors, housekeepers, and contracted foodservice workers in national parks. they currently earn 7-25 an hour... starting next january, they'll get just over *ten dollars. and obama wants congress to raise the minimum wage for *all workers, public and private. it's a thorny issue here in illinois. >> we deserve to have a living wage. to live comfortably.

>> no choice but to figure out a way to reduce labor costs which means fewer hours and that means fewer people find jobs. >> democrats hope to make a higher minimum wage a campaign issue this year. more people are getting insurance through the president's health care law, with just six weeks left before the deadline. more than 88-thousand people in illinois selected a plan since october first. that's up from 61-thousand people a month ago. 75-percent of the customers in illinois qualified for tax credits. a federal report also found that more young people are signing up, but not as many as the administration hoped. march 31-st is the deadline to sign up and avoid a tax penalty. an upcoming birthday for an autistic boy in michigan is showing the amazing power of social media. the boy, named colin, will turn 11 on march 9th. he told his mother that he didn't want to have a birthday party because he has no friends to invite. so his mom created a facebook page to show him how many people "like" him. that page has gone viral -- earning more than one and a

and the s-and-p closed down half a point. comcast corporation is buying time warner cable for over 45- billion dollars. the all-stock deal will combine the nation's two largest cable operators this is the second time comcast has helped re-shape the u-s media landscape. in 20-13, comcast acquired n-b-c universal. the deal must still go through regulatory approval, and the deal should close by the end of the year. toyota has announced a major recall on the prius and other cars. the prius recall includes models from 20-10 through 20-14. toyota says there is a software to shut off while it's being driven. also being re-called is the 20- 12 rav-four, the 20-12 and 20-13 tacoma and lexus r-x-250. valentine's day is tomorrow, and maybe you are wondering what you should wear. one-third of men and women prefer a "hint of cleavage." i never liked cleavage on my man. i always thought less is more when it comes to men and

>> today's high in the low 30's. we're going to throw a party because we will make freezing today. right now we're currently at seven degrees in kankakee. we do find warmer temperatures as a travel into cook county. hawthorne's classic is currently 21. elsewhere, could cover coming in from the west. not much sunshine. it week clipper system will roll through the region today bringing some light snow showers. but not much. today, ready to degrees it will feel warm even though it will be colder than normal. typical high is 35. tonight, 12 degrees. valentine's day will be chilly. 22 degrees for the high. saturday we are 22. monday 37 degrees. tuesday and wednesday we find it climb into the mid 40's. it's almost over.

>> earlier accident on 88 just cleared. everything moving just fine there. a stretch of construction has pershing blocked off. that roadwork will go into february. that's the only item. everything else looks good including travel times. >>now to the developing story out of gary, indiana - -where several people were shot inside a club overnight. tonya francisco is live with the details. >> good morning. not a lot of details but we're hoping to get more information. the spokesperson for the police just walked into the station and told me to have more information as soon as she is able to sort it out. what we do know is that several people have been shot. as many as five including the gunman that was around and 30 last night. this is a safe and sound senior citizens' social club. i am told none of the injuries are life-threatening. back in

october 2011, the owners of the club were arrested and charged with serving alcohol without a permit and promoting fresh professional gambling. that was after a raid by the indiana state police. the tribune reported it was the second time in less than a year that he was hit with those charges. that was back in 2011. during that raid the seethey seized liquor and b. people were charged with visiting a common club which is a misdemeanor. police not releasing much information about last night's shooting but the spokesperson for the police just arrived and she said she would come out and give us more information as soon as she could. back to you. >> but all federal offices in washington d-c are closed today as the east coast prepares for the winter storm that knocked out power to more than half a

million people in the southeast yesterday. cars and trucks got stranded across the region, as several inches of snow fell and ice coated the southeast. first responders even had a hard time getting around in the snow. power crews were scrambling to deal with downed trees and powerlines. more than three thousand flights i been in the company for 15 years. i've never seen anything to this scale. talking to people they say is the biggest they've ever seen. >> but more than 3000 flights were canceled. and more cancelations are expected today as the storm moves up the east coast, toward new york. the city of chicago is nearly five million dollars over budget for snow removal this winter. the sun times reports the city has already blown through 25- million dollars for snow removal - and that includes almost 20 million bucks for salt. the city only budgeted 20 and a half million dollars for all snow removal efforts this year. the mayor has dipped into a motor fuel tax fund to cover the overage but that fund is left with just one and a half million dollars. for the first time in years, the coast guard sent an ice cutter to chicago and into indiana to help free barges that are stuck in thick ice on the lake.

a counselor accused of having sex with a teenage girl could face more charges. prosecutors say kelvin perry exchanged erotic text messages and phone calls with a girl he met at a youth program. police say the two had sex in perry's car outside the woodfield mall and at the girl's foster parents' home in palatine. waukegan police say they are also investigating perry. jurors heard testimony of an alleged plot by an ex-chicago police officer to muscle his way into the strip club business, by torturing and murdering a suburban businessman. government witness george michael, an ex-banker, described a plot to kidnap steve campbell of riverside, force him to hand over his holdings in a club, then kill him. testimony resumes this morning. opening statements were made at the first hearing on whether northwestern football players can form a union. a hearing was held at the regional office of the national labor relations board. the main argument in the case is whether college athletes should be treated as university employees. the players argue that they help generate millions of

dollars in revenue, but they have no bargaining rights. but northwestern argues that the athletes are students first. >> they're raising an important issue its the issues of health consequences of the ball is a national issue. they should have a say. we believe they should. we just don't believe that the proper way is through a labor negotiation. >> the beginning of the end where college athletes will be exploited and denied their rights as employees. >>football players and other witnesses are expected to begin testifying at the same office next week. this whole process could take over a year. a federal judge has set a trial date for the boston marathon bombing suspect. dzhokhar tsarnaev will stand trial in early november for detonating two bombs near the race's finish line, killing three people, and injuring 260 others. survivors of the bombings will be invited to share their stories at a congressional hearing in boston this spring. the house homeland security committee hopes to finish the

hearing before *this year's marathon on april 21-st. the former mayor of new orleans has been convicted on federal corruption charges. ray nagin is accused of taking more than 200-thousand dollars in exchange for city contracts dating back to 2004 -- before hurricane katrina devastated the city. nagin served two terms as mayor and left office in 2010. he now faces up to twenty years in prison. his lawyers say they will appeal the conviction. a church burglary suspect in california was captured almost in texas case was not heard by judge. the judge did not say when the ruling would, gay marriage but he did say it would eventually go before the state supreme court. in missouri 86 same-sex couples are challenging the ban. an amendment was put into the constitution back into the us and forcing a marriage is between a man and woman. in about the city will no longer
