a rare thunder snowstorm blanketed our area and set a new record. we are *live with the latest. caught on camera -- a metra train t-bones a car that got stuck on the snow covered tracks. and thousand professors at *u- i-c* go on strike today for the first time in campus history. good morning. i'm dan ponce. and i'm erin mcelroy. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. that was a good pilot stout just like he said. >> we then had some under snow which is pretty rare. it happens in some areas of the country. you mess with us ... we bring the founder. let's take a look at our day. temperatures are going to warm up a bit. winter

has brought us cool temperatures this is the warmest temperature we've had in a while. the breeze will feel good. it will be partly cloudy. right now it's 29 at the lakefront. 29 at o'hare. 22 in bartlett. 14 degrees in the north. later today we will be melting our snow pretty quickly we are expecting our temperatures to climb above freezing. satellite composite shows the crowd close to the lake breaking up today. here are the temperatures. 38 degrees by 5:00 p.m.. early as 7:00 a.m. is 27 degrees the overnight low. i think people are thinking of this as over but that will be the case. it will be warm but then we have another temperature drop. freezing rain changing over to snow during the day on

thursday. temperatures will fall quickly. >> we have some delays on the trip because of a developing story. a difficult commit this morning because a freight train derailed and is blocking some tracks. the train was he there is leaving or entering the freight yard. outbound train approaching as the train derailed. it ended up heading back to union station. use the u p west line as an alternative. in the last few minutes we heard a train 1216 was not operating at all. go to the u p west line as an alternative. we will stay on top of that and bring you more in the next few minutes. >>a steady pace of snow turned

highways into the slowest way tomost of the highways and busy streets in the chicago area are now clear as plows were out all night. it took several hours to get that way, as the snow came during the heaviest amounts of traffic yesterday. that added hours to some people's travel times, because of low visibility and accidents. >> it's really bad. in barely dry on this. >> we have all the salt need and we continue to have solved the need to get our streets paved and to keep them safe for the communities through the city. >>five to seven inches of snow fell all over the chicago area. this season is now in 5-th place for most snow in the city. the busy streets may be cleared, but the side streets you need to get there are probably not. tonya francisco is live in old irving park with more. tonya? the morning. it's time to dig out again. the city is doing its part by plowing this note but as you pointed out, this is what we have to worry about on the side

streets. look at the contrast. this is occurring park road. you can see the pavement and there's no problem. but as you turn over here, this is the side street. it's a much different story. one of those streets that least one the past had to be made but not enough to get the clear pavement like you had seen on the main street. we do have some video of that. the good news is that mother nature will help out by melting some of us know today. response to get near 40 degrees today. but that creates a problem with the slushy streets and flooding issues. but one problem at a time. if you have not been announced in the snow since it stopped last night, a set aside some extra time this morning to dig yourself out. back to you. >>some parts of will county got around seven inches of snow.

some people were still driving too fast for those slippery conditions. that led to several spin outs on i-80 in joliet and on the stevenson near route 30. no serious injuries were reported. it's taking longer to keep roads in the suburbs clear, as some areas stretch out their dwindling salt supply. >> we budgeted $100,000 for salt. at this point we purchased $235,000 in salt. we had 600 t on hand. we hope that gets us to the end of winter. >>the village of glen ellyn has multiple piles to work with. some came from as far as kansas, another pile is mixed with beet juice, and then there's a secret stash from another un-disclosed township in illinois. chicago's airports will try to get back on schedule today. at o-hare, nearly 830 flights were cancelled yesterday. it was not much better at midway with 230 flights cancelled. many people spent the nights on cots at o'hare. now that the bad weather is out of our area, people can expect delays out east. parts of new england could pick

up six inches of snow through tonight. we'll get an update on what you can expect today at o'hare and midway ... later this morning. a metra train slammed into a car in the northwest suburbs, and it was caught on video. nobody was injured. it happened yesterday afternoon in des plaines, on river road. the outbound metra train was arriving from chicago when a driver got stuck on the tracks, and couldn't maneuver her car out of the way on the icy surface. >> our first i thought i can't believe that just happened. i was really hoping that she was alive. but then people hopped in and help her out of the car. >>the woman walked away from the crash uninjured. a man from oak forest has died as a result of the cold weather. the medical examiner says 80 year old frank beck died from hypothermia ... and that heart disease was a contributing factor. a family member found him in his home in the six thousand block of oakland street on sunday. beck is the twenty first person

to die this winter of cold related causes in cook county. more than 150 people gathered on the campus of southern illinois university to hold a vigil for a missing student from northwest suburban morton grove. 19-year-old pravin vehrgeez was last seen leaving a party on campus nearly a week ago. phone records show he called a friend in chicago a couple of hours later ... then posted on twitter that suggested he may have been in a fight. police have used helicopters and search dogs - but have not found a trace of vehrgeez. the group prayed for his safe return. >> we don't know where he is if he is warm or hungry. we just want our brother back. >>the family is offering a 15 thousand dollar reward for information about his disappearance. friends and family of victims of chicago's deadliest nightclub disaster gathered at the site of the old e-2 nightclub to remember their loved ones. yesterday marked the 11-th anniversary of the tragedy that killed 21 people. they were crushed to death after a security guard released pepper spray into a crowd to break up a fight.

families held a prayer vigil last night at 23rd and michigan in their honor. club co-owners calvin hollins and dwain kyles were convicted in 2009 of criminal contempt and sentenced to two years in prison. an appellate court has ordered a new sentencing hearing. more than a thousand professors at the university of illinois at chicago are on strike today ... the first in the school's thirty-year history. the union that represents 11- hundred full-time tenured and non-tenured teachers at u-i-c says their two-day strike comes after 18 months of negotiations over a new contract. the main issue is a pay increase. they say some professors with doctorates make as little as 30- thousand dollars . >> we will bargain again on friday but we're doing this to show the administration that we are serious. we can't just be ignored. >> we've had a mediator involved since december. >> the professors will be on the picket line today and tomorrow. the strike does not affect

teaching or graduate assistants, who are in a separate bargaining unit. some local public employee unions are asking taxpayers in chicago to keep their members' pensions fully funded -- by paying higher income and property taxes. the chicago teachers union claims, its retired teachers could lose 700 dollars a month in pension payments if chicago implements the same pension reforms *state lawmakers approved last year. as a result, the c-t-u says, the city's *economy could suffer. the union will join others in the public sector, at a rally in springfield tomorrow, to lobby against pension reductions. it was historic win for the ice dancers. first ever u.s. gold. they been skating together for 17 years. the jamaican bobsled team finished 29. looking at the medal count, the u.s. and russia sit at the top with 19 medals each. the netherlands has 17. norway and canada tied at 15 medals. an american skier will

more than a hundred injured after a roof collapsed at a college retreat in south korea. it happened last night in a mountain resort in the southern city of gyongju - where more than five hundred college freshmen had gathered for a welcoming party. it was snowing at the time. authorities believe all survivors have been accounted for. the south korean president has expressed his "deepest condolences" for the victims and is calling for a thorough investigation into the collapse. the long, cold, snowy winter is starting to fray people's nerves. a snow plow driver in massachusetts just got whacked in the head by an angry neighbor.

the victim clears the one-lane road in his small subdivision in lakeville, with a plow attached to the front of his truck. but the other day, someone got angry when the plow pushed snow back into his property... and he took his revenge with a snow shovel. >> there was snow on his side and he wasn't happy. there were some words and it escalated. and he hit the other in the head and shoulder. >> police charged this man, douglas haskell, with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. the plow driver is okay. three crew members and several passengers were injured when a united airlines flight encountered severe turbulence. the flight from denver hit turbulence as it descended in billings, montana. the captain declared a medical emergency after a flight attendant was injured. there were 114 passengers and five crew members on board. all were treated and released except one flight attendant. the plane landed at the airport in montana. the shoe is on the other foot for a chinese artist known for damaging property to protest.

ai weiwei has not only created art to express himself. he has also destroyed it. but now an artist in florida gave him a taste of his own medicine. a man was caught on camera picking up a vase and dropping it on the floor. that vase was made by ai weiwei and is valued at one million dollars. the man says this was a spontaneous protest against the gallery's decision to only display international art. >> what is wrong with people? hitting each other of ahead breaking vases. >> and a vase worth a million dollars? really? today we have warmer temperatures. we will see our high reached '30's. we haven't been there about a month. as a matter of fact, almost every day this month was colder than normal. today we change that. wind of the west. a 72 percent humidity. you will see a big temperature range across the region. cloud cover

and the change back to the snow. 39 degrees for the high temperature today. decreasing clouds. barrault's high is 36. thursday the mix will develop in the afternoon. a high of 46. >> a quick update on the situation out here. a lot of metra trains will experience delays. some canceled due to the train derailment happened on the south side. it's basically call blocking three pairs of tracks preventing some of the trains from getting through. b. n s f 1216 not operating at all. any of the trains heading into a war or chicago, 30 minute delays. the one line i think this will change to the morning they may add more trains. your best alternate is the u p west line. other than that, a few buses have been rerouted as well including the 96 bus. our roads are looking good. no big

for presidents day. on friday, the dow gained 126 points. the nasdaq rose 3. and the s-and-p closed up 8 points. becoming the face of the franchise after only four seasons in chicago, 11 of 14 last year are misleading numbers resulting from a bad season for almost every body except for him. he says he gained a new perspective from the epic struggle in 2013.

over the chicago area. this season is now in 5-th place for most snow in the city. parts of will county got around seven inches of snow. some people were still driving too fast for those slippery conditions. tonya francisco is out of checking on the roads. >> they have been on the side streets today but i must tell you, if you have not been out, since this nonstop and need your car to get around, you will want to set aside some extra time to dig yourself out. overnight, crews switched their focus from the main street to the side streets and most have at least had one pass of the snowplow but there are still cars that are covered in snow this morning. not only will you need to clean off your car, you'll probably need to dig out around your wheels. we were stuck for a little bit. the return to set up for this story we had ice underneath all the snow from all the previous snowfalls.

cancelled. many people spent the nights on cots at o'hare. now that the bad weather is out of our area, people can expect delays out east. parts of new england could pick up six inches of snow through tonight. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a woman is lucky to be alive, let alone uninjured, after this metra train hit her car, yesterday in des plaines. the car got caught in the ice and snow at the river road crossing, just as the outbound but again, she didn't get hurt. family and friends gathered on the s-i-u campus to hold a vigil for for a missing student. 19-year-old pravin varughese was last seen leaving a party on the campus nearly a week ago. phone records show he called a chicago friend a couple of hours later.. then posted on twitter that he was in a fight. the family is offering a 15 thousand dollar reward for information about his disappearance. 11-hundred professors at the university of illinois at chicago will cross the picket

line today. it is the first strike in the school's thirty-year history. the union that represents the full-time tenured and non- tenured teachers says their two-day strike is meant to send a message to the school's administration after 18 months of failed negotiations for a new contract. jury selection begins today, in the murder trial of allan kustok. prosecutors say kustok shot his wife anita in the head, more than three years ago, as she lay sleeping in her bed in orland park. kustok says his wife committed into the bedroom furniture, so he wouldn't be tempted to kill *himself after he saw his wife dead. a united nations human rights commission says it has significant evidence that north korean leaders are killing and and the u.n. wants to put korean dictator kim jong un on trial. drawings by former prison camp detainees show people being violently beaten... dragged behind trucks... starved... and in many cases executed. in one case, a woman said she was forced to drown her newborn

baby because a prison guard didn't like the child's crying. insiders say the u.n. report is not likely to change anything in north korea. three people died during an anti-government protest in thailand. demonstrators have been trying for months to force the prime minister to resign. police used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse protesters. a police officer and two other men have been killed, and at least fifty-eight people were injured. police are still trying to clear groups of protesters from the center of the city friends of bill befriends of the woman's wishes police to 20 people are reacting say they are surprised by heard mission. before she claims that she stopped counting the victims at 22 and she likely killed more men than that. she said she committed her first murder at the age of 13. >> we went to the bowling alley together and stuff like that. it's a weird feeling to think of

her other life. >> to watch a lot of tv. she may be built to get an insanity plea. >> police say she and her husband used craigslist to lure a man that wanted to kill. both she and her husband have pleaded not guilty. >>indiana voters will have to wait a few years before they vote on a proposed amendment against gay marriage. gay marriage is not legal under indiana law. but now the legislature has approved an amendment that would ban it, within the state constitution. this was first proposed three years ago, but this version does not ban civil unions. that will delay getting the proposal on the ballot because state law requires proposed amendments to be passed by two legislative sessions before they go to the voters. that means it'll have to wait until election day in 2016. the mayor of gary will deliver her state of the city address.

she's good delay of her goals for next year. we will stream the speech live on the website. >>a chicago attorney is about to get two prime endorsements in his race for the cook county board. 27-year-old blake sercye will be endorsed by mayor emanuel and county board president toni preckwinkle. the endorsements are especially valuable, because sercye faces a crowded field of challengers, including disgraced former chicago alderman ike carothers, who served prison time for bribery and tax fraud. the biker who posted a "catch me if you can" video of himself speeding through san antonio traffic -- has been caught. 27-year old alberto rodriguez is now facing numerous charges including stealing the motorcycle used in the video. in the facebook post, the motorcyclist weaves through rush hour traffic at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour. investigators were searching for the stolen motorcycle when they found rodriguez. this book is not always a good thing. >> stories like that make us

caregivers and teachers in kansas could soon have more power to spank children. lawmakers in kansas are considering a bill that would lighten the spanking laws allowing parents or anyone given permission by a parent to spank hard enough to leave redness or bruising. supporters of the measure say kids are losing respect for authority that parents need to be able to discipline without fear. the bill would allow up to 10 strikes of the hand and smacks but strikes with a fist or belt would be considered battery or abuse. the u.s. navy is about to get some new high-tech weaponry in the persian gulf. a new type of laser will allow a naval ship to burn a hole through an attacking speedboat or aerial drone, and completely disable its electronics. and it can be operated by just one person. it's cheaper and more effective than bombs or missiles. another new weapon is an electromagnetic rail gun that can fire its weapons at seven
