25 degrees below. that means furnaces will have to keep working harder to keep homes heated on the heels of the warning of natural gas bills going up next month. peoples gas is morning of march bills that could be more than $50 higher for the average customer. on top of that, peoples and north shore gas are asking the state commerce commission to approve overall rate hikes to cover higher delivery costs which has a watchdog group on guard. >> we're constantly investing in in for a structure and it costs more to operate and maintain that system in the cold. >> we will go over every line and every member of this request. the gas company will have a fight on their hands to justify every penny. >> the peoples gas co. says they have had to deliver more natural gas this year than in the past

decade and the increased demand requires the buying of more supply amid a far more expensive market and that is on top of higher delivery costs because of the cold. back to youa man was given a ticket for taking a walk... onto the ice on lake michigan. the man walked onto the ice at monroe harbor yesterday afternoon. police and fire crews ordered him to go back onto shore. he made it back safely and was given a citation for violating a city ordinance. pothole damage claims are soaring in chicago. the snow and temperature changes have turned streets into a mine field for your tires and rims. 280 damage claims from potholes were introduced at this month's city council meeting. that's more than any other month in the past four years. the city clerk's office processes damage claims up to two-thousand dollars. drivers need to send in a claim form, a police report, and a repair bill. there is yet another act of revolution in ukraine, just

days after the country's president was deposed. within ukraine is an autonomous region called crimea. this morning, protesters seized a government building, and the crimean parliament, and raised a *russian flag over it. the seizure was a protest against the political upheaval in the ukrainian capital of kiev. the temporary government in ukraine has announced a slate of nominees for a new *unity government, aligned with the european union. and the united states warned russia against any military intervention to bring ukraine back into russia's orbit. the governor of arizona has vetoed a controversial bill that would protect businesses who denied services to gay and lesbian customers based on the owner's religious beliefs. governor jan brewer spent yesterday meeting with supporters and opponents of the bill before rejecting the law. she says the bill was "broadly worded" and would have brought negative consequences to the

state. >> to as a perverse i understand that long-held norms are being challenged as never before. but i sincerely believe that the senate bill proposed has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve. >>brewers decision was greeted by cheers from gay rights advocates who fought the bill, saying it was discrimination. supporters argued the bill was a religious freedom issue. the measure would have automatically become law saturday, if brewer had not taken action. marriage licenses are now available for same sex couples in central illinois. days after a judge gave cook county the go ahead to issue licenses, the champaign county clerk is following suit. illinois new marriage equality law doesn't officially take effect until june. but champaign county clerk gordy hulten says it doesn't make sense to delay granting a fundamental right. three same sex couples were granted licenses yesterday.

loyola university is limiting wedding ceremonies at its chapel on the rogers park campus. in december, the school changed its policy to allow only catholic-sanctioned weddings between a man and a woman at the chapel. all other ceremonies are forbidden campus-wide. some students and alumni members are angry the university won't allow same-sex marriage ceremonies after passage of the marriage equality act last year. investigators continue to look into an apparent murder-suicide that killed four people, including a five-year-old boy in oak lawn. it started just after 5 a-m yesterday - with a fire at a home in the 898-hundred block of 51st avenue. a firefighter who lived nearby arrived to see a 36-year-old man shoot and kill himself in a car in the garage. firefighters then found a man in his 60's inside the home with a gunshot wound. hours later, the body of a 68- year-old woman was found in the basement. she was also shot. the boy's body was found last night. >> is evil or someone with mental health problems? >> no trouble. just regular people. >> released.

neighbors say they are all related. police say they've never been called to the home before. we want to correct a story we reported yesterday regarding the murder trial of allan kustok who is charged with murdering his wife. the prosecution witness we told you about yesterday testified that she had only one meeting with kustok and did not have an affair with him. we regret the error. the daughter-in-law of allan kustok testified that she thought he and her mother-in- law had a happy marriage. nicole kustok said she was shocked, four years ago, to hear that her mother-in-law, anita kustok, had been shot to death. allan kustok is on trial for her murder.... he claims she killed *herself. nicole kustok said she wouldn't describe the kustoks' marriage as "perfect"... but merely "happy." the president was not until his new initiative to provide jobs and is for minority men. it will work with young men to

the flight from los angeles was operated by skywest airlines. the emergency chutes were not deployed. everyone got out through the cabin door into the jetway with flight attendants hurrying them along. >> according to the flight attendant, the back of the plane was filling up with more smoke and people could not breathe. so they try to get everyone quickly off. >>the source of the smoke has not been determined. some viewers may find the next video disturbing. a surveillance video found a bus driver beating a passenger in the olympia, washington. the two men argued, and the driver ordered the other man to get off the bus. that's when the passenger got agitated, then turned violent. a fellow passenger tried in vain to stop the attack. eventually, the attacker got off the bus... transit employees recognized him from this video... and police tracked him down and arrested him. four students at the university of utah face expulsion after getting caught smoking pot on campus... in this igloo. a university police officer

found the igloo hidden in a wooded area on campus -- and then he found four men inside smoking marijuana. police aren't sure if the men built the igloo or happened to find it - but they say it was about five feet tall and had walls of snow about ten inches thick and a cardboard door. it's since been destroyed. the students were charged with possession of marijuana. boeing has a new gadget that would be perfect on the t-v show "mission impossible." it's called the *black smartphone. boeing filed plans to the f-c-c this month, but few details about are known. the phone is programmed to self destruct if someone tampers with it. so if someone tries to break it open, the phone deletes its data and software and becomes useless. the phone is being designed for government workers who handle sensitive information. >> a new vehicle exploded. >> there may be a lot of

a government building in the country's crimean region, and raised a *russian flag over the crimean parliament. the seizure was a protest against the political upheaval in the ukrainian capital of kiev. the united states warned russia against any military intervention, as ukraine tries to establish a new unity government. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. four people are dead in an apparent murder-suicide in oak lawn. a firefighter responding to a house fire yesterday morning -- witnessed a 36-year-old man shot and kill himself inside a car in home's garage. a man in his 60's was then found inside with a gunshot wound. hours later, after the fire was put out, the bodies of a 68- year-old woman and a five-year- old boy were found in the basement. police say the woman was also shot. their names have not been released but neighbors say all four were related. the daughter-in-law of orland park businessman allan kustok

testified that she thought he and her mother-in-law had a happy marriage. nicole kustok said she was shocked, four years ago, to hear that her mother-in-law, anita kustok, had been shot to death. allan kustok is on trial for her murder.... he claims she killed *herself. nicole kustok said she wouldn't describe the kustoks' marriage as "perfect"... but merely "happy." arthur bishop is resigning as director of d-c-f-s after being appointed to the position by governor pat quinn just last month. since the appointment, reports surfaced that bishop had plead guilty in 1995 to misdemeanor theft for mis-use of money at a community health center. he was also involved in a paternity case that proved a woman was his daughter through d-n-a testing 11 years ago. chicago public schools will once again begin after labor day next fall. c-p-s changed the master calendar yesterday - approving a start date of tuesday, september 2nd. officials say they pushed back the start of the school year after getting feedback from parents and the teachers union. one other notable change -- the district reinstated presidents' day as a holiday instead of lincoln's birthday. the governor of arizona has

state for the right to marry in texas. the texas attorney general says he will appeal the ruling and take the case to the supreme court. documents that give a closer look at the clinton presidency are close to being released to the public. the collection includes about 33-thousand pages from clinton's eight years in office. they consist of confidential communications with advisers and possibly hillary clinton. there is no specific date set for their release. white house records can be withheld for 12 years after an administration ends, under federal law. after that, the records are subject to restrictions under the "freedom of information" act. in the governor's race, republican dan rutherford says he would like to release the findings of a report he commissioned on allegations he sexually harassed a former employee more than two years ago. however, appearing on c-l-t-v's politics tonight, rutherford said he can't release the findings because his accuser is now suing him. >> the accuser and the attorney filed a federal lawsuit and actually served the papers. we were ready to release it when it was filed. when that happened it put the whole thing into a

different perspective. i'm sorry, it will not be released. >> the allegations were made by edmund michalowski... rutherford's former director of community affairs and marketing. rutherford says the accusations are politically motivated and tied to his run for governor. one of the state's biggest unions is trying to block bruce rauner from pouring any more of his own money into his campaign warchest. the afl-cio filed an ethics complaint with the state's executive inspector general. the union says rauner should have to wait two years to donate to any candidate, including himself, because his hedge fund company got illinois teachers pension business. rauner left the company in october 2012, so the complaint argues he can't donate until this october, just before the general election. rauner has put 5-million dollars of his own money into his campaign. the illinois retired teachers association is endorsing kirk dillard in the republican primary for governor. the group has about 35-thousand members. dillard, a state senator from hinsdale, just jumped in the polls from fourth place, to second behind bruce rauner. he also has the backing of the illinois education association, the union for all illinois teachers outside chicago. a man in california is training for the daredevil stunt of a lifetime.

nasa just announced the biggest single discovery of planets ever made.

the agency says it has discovered 715 new planets. compare that to the one- thousand planets that were identified before. the planets were found using a new technique with the kepler space telescope. four of the planets are in the "habitable zone," which nasa says means they could potentially support life. nasa also says upcoming data could reveal even more planets. most people would consider a trip to mars, a suicide mission. a one-way mission to colonize mars is already being planned for the year 20-25. but a panel of islamic scholars says, it had better not include any muslims. three people from the united arab emirates have volunteered as candidates. but now the country's clerics are declaring such a mission "un-muslim." they say, "it is not permissible to travel to mars and never to return, if there is no life on mars... the chances of dying are higher than living." a man charged with running a meth lab and posed for a picture with a breaking bad references. when police raided his home they say he found chemicals and
