temperatures to be really cool. we may have a record low. high temperature 14 degrees below average which is still improvement since we are finally coming out of the single digits today. it's eight degrees at the lakefront. we are five degrees at o'hare. currently - 2 in joliet and - 1 in dekalb. we do have cool temperatures as a travel away from the center. wind chill is quite low. -13 in dekalb. satellite rare composite choose its dry. lake effect clouds and snow are on the flip side of lake michigan. but the chance of snow tonight is light snow. more snow saturday and then as the heavier snow comes it will be sunday. two years to the mid-20s. tonight we go down to 17. snow showers develop saturday the snow continues into sunday. >> your main roads are still

nice unclear but we do have street closures to tell you about. overnight fire near 126 and 159. heavy smoke coming out of that home. they still have closures on 126. both leans down to one lane through that stretch. we are hearing that 59 is open. watch for traffic tieups there in plainfield. but the rest of the road so far so good. one woman is dead and her daughter is critically injured after a shooting inside a home on chicago's southwest side. nancy loo is *live at stroger hospital with more. >> according to police, the deadly shooting was instigated by a fight between the 25 year- old daughter and her boyfriend who is now a wanted man. the

woman is in critical condition here where her mother was pronounced dead this morning. police say the suspect was arguing with his girlfriend at her home on the 5400 block just after midnight when her mother tried to intervene. the man shot a 43 year-old mother and his girlfriend and a third woman in the home was apparently hit in the head before the suspect made his escape. the mother was shot twice and died of her injuries and the daughter is in critical condition with a gunshot to the torso. police have been here at the hospital. not clear whether the woman is able to speak with them. police know exactly who they are looking for in this homicide. it's just a matter of finding them. >>our long and extreme winter is

making it difficult for the city of chicago's water department to keep up with frozen pipes. crews have been working for weeks ... handling calls of no water service at homes, apartment buildings and businesses. this gas station at 66th and south state street has had *no water for three weeks -- until crews arrived yesterday. the problem was that the water pipes, which are six feet underground, were frozen solid. >> at this time last year we had about 900 calls of no water. this year, we have had over 4500. >>the water department recommends you keep a trickle of water running from a faucet. that keeps the water moving in the pipes and prevents them from freezing. just because it's cold, it doesn't mean the coast guard isn't busy. yesterday they showed how they train for rescues in the icy waters of lake michigan. members of "coast guard station calumet harbor" do drills like this every day, so they're ready for real emergencies. if someone falls in the water at this temperature, hypothermia could happen within minutes. 100-people over the past two

winters. the power is back on at the university of notre dame. the outage happened last night around 9:15 ... right before the women's basketball team's post- game press conference. players and coaches were getting ready to talk about the fighting irish's win against north carolina. power was restored at about 10:45 last night. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a student at northwestern university is suing one of her professors. the woman claims philosophy professor peter ludlow got her drunk and made sexual advances, two years ago. the woman says the incident drove her to attempt suicide, and left her suffering from panic attacks whenever she saw ludlow on campus. the woman sued the university previously for failing to handle her complaint properly. the professor has denied any inappropriate behavior, and northwestern has also denied any wrongdoing. police in gurnee are questioning a woman in connection with the vandalism of several churches and at least one mosque. earlier this month, someone spray-painted obscene messages or drawings near the entrances. authorities released images from surveillance video.

an officer was in traffic court and saw someone who looked like the person in the video. no charges have been filed. police in oak lawn are revealing new details in the murder-suicide of four people. investigators say 36-year-old john conta junior used his father's shotgun to shoot his parents and his nephew, matthew meier, just hours after they celebrated the boy's fifth birthday tuesday night. police say conta junior then poured gasoline in the home's basement ... and set the home on fire. a firefighter responding to the fire saw conta shoot and kill himself inside a car in the garage. family friends say conta, a former math teacher, moved in with his parents last fall after working in russia as a potato farmer. com-ed customers will be receiving "smart meters" sooner than expected. the "smart meters" will eliminate the need for meter readers... and com-ed will know immediately when and where there has been a power outage. com-ed says the smart meters are expected to save customers 150-million dollars. they began replacing the meters on the south side last week. com-ed plans to switch all

meters by 20-18. cook county sheriff tom dart is reacting angrily to a lawsuit that claims the county jail subjects inmates to a culture of life-threatening violence. the lawsuit, by northwestern university's mac-arthur justice center, claims maximum-security inmates are sometimes beaten by the guards, outside the view of security cameras. >> the stamslam people to the fr and stomp them often while they are handcuffed. >> i don't even know where to start with the spirit is so outrageous. >> sheriff dart characterized the lawsuit as a fictitious novel. and he says he plans to complain to the mac-arthur center about what he considers baseless claims and a frivolous lawsuit. 88 inmates signed declarations claiming they were victims of abuse by the guards. the republican candidates

governor had another debate, with their primary less than three weeks away. bruce rauner was targeted frequently by his opponents. he has used his personal wealth for an ad-campaign that put him ahead in polls. state senators bill brady and kirk dillard and treasurer dan rutherford accused rauner of pay to play politics and pointed out his lack of experience. but rauner referred to them as career politicians, not reformers. here's what the candidates envision, if they become governor. >> more jobs at lower taxes better schools term limits on politicians. that's where i will lead. >> nobody has the bipartisan working ability that i have in the race for governor as well as just a proven track record of doing that. >> bring the legislator together and use the strength to fit what in the interest of the people. >> as your governor, i will not sign any revenue into law

without it being part of a complete package dealing with cuts, the idea of borrowing, consolidation of state agencies. >>all the candidates will debate again here, on w-g-n on wednesday at six p-m. the primary is march 18-th. so-called "revenge porn" is closer to being *illegal in illinois. no senators rejected a proposed ban yesterday. the bill would make it illegal to post nude, or sexually explicit, pictures of another person, without that person's permission. it would also make it illegal to charge a fee to get pictures removed from a website. offenders could get up to three years in prison and a fine. supporters say this targets "cyber bullying," but the american civil liberties union says it attacks free speech. chicago's city council zoning committee has endorsed a bill to let strip clubs serve alcohol to their customers. alderman ed burke says, as long as the clubs don't create problems in their neighborhoods, they ought to be allowed to sell liquor and permit semi-nude dancing at the same time.

sharper turned himself in to face new rape charges. sharper surrendered to los angeles police last night. prosecutors in new orleans charged him with two counts of rape yesterday. they say he and erik nunez committed rape in an apartment in september. last week, sharper pleaded not guilty to similar charges in california. those alleged attacks were in october and last month. his attorney says sharper's contact with those women was consensual. sharper played for three teams during his 13 year career. a federal judge in kentucky ruled the state will recognize same-sex marriages performed outside of the state. but kentucky's attorney general is asking for a 90-day delay on that order.

the attorney general says he needs to decide whether to appeal the judge's ruling that the state's same-sex marriage ban is unconstitutional. couples wanting to marry in kentucky still cannot get a license. walt disney world is cutting off donations to orlando-area boy scout troops over the national organization's ban on gay leaders. walt disney world has routinely donated to local troops where employees volunteer, but the company says the boy scouts' ban on openly gay troop leaders is not in line with its company policy. the boy scouts of america voted last spring to allow openly gay youth scouts, but kept its ban on openly gay troop leaders. you're about to see a nine- month-old girl from texas hear her very first sounds. kendall johnson was born deaf. but she has just been surgically outfitted with cochlear implants. >> did you notice something? >> there is practically no level of hearing loss that we can't treat them for and keep them functioning well in the hearing world.

it seems like a long way between games for the blackhawks. the completed in 20 days so they resumed this season last night. they opened the home stretch of the season with an original six matchup against the new york rangers. seven straight game in a row and it's their first two since the loss in phoenix. not much scoring. it's 1-0 rangers

we've just learned the 25 year- old woman was trying to break things off with her boyfriend when the deadly shooting happened. she is here now in critical condition. her mother is dead and police are actively searching for the boyfriend. the deadly shooting happened inside the woman's home along the 5400 block of south lapland just after midnight. the girlfriend's 43 year-old mother tried to intervene in the argument when the boyfriend took out a gun and shot both women. according to the grandmother, a sister was hit in the head before a suspect made his escape. the mother was shot twice and died of her injuries after being rushed to the hospital. the daughter is in critical condition with a gunshot to the torso. i spoke with the grandmother just a short time ago. she did not want to be on

jail for trying to hire someone to hurt her ex-husband and his new wife. a-t-f officials say michelle bertoncini provided undercover agents with photos and a down payment. they say she wanted her ex- husband and his new wife incapacitated, so she could get her children back. she's due back in court next week. gurnee police are questioning a woman in connection with the vandalism of several churches, and at least one mosque. defense attorneys for allan kustok are asking for a mistrial in kustok's murder case. the orland park businessman claims his wife anita shot herself to death, four years ago. prosecutors say her husband murdered her. the defense says kustok cannot get a fair trial, because his son zak publicly declared that he is not *supporting his father. chicago department of transportation has filled 200 thousand potholes so far this year. crews are on the street seven days a week working to repair the roads. and the city is putting additional crews on the job starting tomorrow. they are expected to fill an additional 15-hundred potholes a day. someone breached security and made what's believed to be the
