courtney is a growl. the roadway so far so good no major delays. everything is looking good. overnight roadwork on the eisenhower ride by morgan where they have that demolition. expect that to be tight. otherwise the rest of the roads are looking good. >>an autopsy may reveal how a man died on the south side. the body of the 36-year-old man was found between two parked cars yesterday afternoon in the 83-hundred block of south brandon avenue. he had suffered some kind of trauma. initially police thought he might be the victim of a hit- and-run accident. now they're not so sure. they've opened a death investigation. the man's name has not been released. secretary of state john kerry arrives in kiev today, to try to defuse a growing crisis in ukraine. andrew spencer reports, kerry plans to meet with his russian counterpart, to ask for his help. >> troops around military installations around the crimean

according to senior administration official examine ways to further isolate russia should the crisis continue. vladimir putin ordered his troops to return back to the bases after military exercises insisting the exercises were always meant to end on march 3rd. >>the first witness in the oscar pistorius murder trial is resuming her testimony. pistorius is charged with murdering his girlfriend at his home in south africa last year. yesterday a neighbor testified that she woke up that night to a woman's screams, four gunshots, and then a man yelling for help. the defense questioned her on the possibility of gunshots before she woke up and whether her recollection was accurate. pistorius says he shot and killed his girlfriend because he thought she was an intruder, in his bathroom. but prosecutors say this was a pre-meditated murder. c-p-s parents are finding themselves caught in the middle of the battle between teachers

and administrators over standardized tests. nancy loo is *live with more information. >> good morning. the teachers' union has set a protest here at the school later this morning ahead of the testing. teachers at the school were among those to organize the boycott. all have supposedly said they will not administer these tests. but they are required by law to do so. it's just not clear how many students will actually take the test. >> the illinois standard achievement test is eight days long and some schools began the process yesterday. most elementary students across the state are expected to begin the testing this morning. it's not clear what will happen at the school and drummond montessori where teachers spearheaded the boycott. according to the

teachers' union, parents and more than 70 schools have expressed the don't want their children taking the test. some parents spoke out of the thompson center yesterday claiming administrators are making it uncomfortable for students who are opting out. >> they have the power to stop the intimidation and abuse and mistreatment. >> the test is required by the new child left behind act but since it is being replaced by two other tests next year, critics claim this round of testing is pointless and a waste of time. c p s says it's working to ensure a proper environment for students to take the test. according to some parents, but district made calls to stress the test is required by state and federal law. >> i am against it. i sent my daughter out of it because i am aware is not counting toward promotion or anything. >> the state board of education

says the test provide a valuable data on how districts are ferrying in meeting higher benchmarks. this morning the test is supposed to be administered to all students grades 3-8 regardless of whether they are opting out. back to you. >> suspended. getting a second chance. cbs took away their city championship and their 24 victories because they used players that were academically ineligible. the head coach was suspended. now the illinois high school association says the school can still be in the state tournament. there will keep their top seed but they still won't have two of their best players or coaches. parents of players at other schools have mixed reactions. >>

i think they should have a chance especially if there were number one the work hard to get there i think it's fair. >> i am a basketball mom. i am here to support my son. if he wasn't getting good grades in school, basketball would not be tolerated. >>curie plays dusable tonight at king college. coach oliver remains suspended and has not commented. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a truck driver from hanover park pled not guilty to slamming his rig into an illinois tollway employee and a state trooper. police say renato -velasquez- was driving with insufficient sleep when the truck hit a tollway vehicle on i-88 near aurora. the judge ordered velasquez to surrender his passport. the crash that took place back in january killed tollway worker vincent petrella and seriously injured trooper douglas balder. a man pled not guilty to murdering his roommate in naperville back in january. police say 21-year-old grant van muren

answered charles clark's craigslist ad for a roommate, and the two men became intimate within hours or van muren moving in. but the police report says van muren assaulted and strangled clark, then set the apartment on fire. clark's body was discovered january 22-nd. federal regulators are investigating an accident at a northwest suburban snowboard park that left a teenaged employee seriously injured. it happened sunday at the "raging buffalo snowboard ski park" in algonquin. the 17-year-old's arm got stuck in the machine that operates a ski lift at the park. it took more than 30 rescuers about an hour to free him. the investigation could take up to six months. three people stole thousands of dollars worth of handbags from the bloomingdale's on the mag mile. two women and a man grabbed several high-end handbags and escaped in a white s-u-v yesterday afternoon. the bags are worth six thousand dollars. no arrests have been made. a ton of road salt was stolen from far northwest suburban woodstock. now, the city's head of street maintenance is being charged as the thief. dale behm was arrested friday. he made bail saturday.

police say behm made off with a pile of salt and two snowplow skid plates. he's charged with theft of government property... and he's been suspended with pay until his trial. a winter storm hit the east coast bringing freezing rain, snow and near-record cold temperatures. the storm dumped four inches of snow in washington d-c, shutting down schools and government offices. icy roads in virginia were blamed for at least one death yesterday. and there were at least four weather-related traffic deaths in texas, oklahoma and tennessee over the weekend. freeze warnings were in place from the canadian border into texas. and heavy sleet left about 30 thousand homes and businesses in tennessee without power. one man in northeastern wisconsin is taking advantage of all the snow this season. he built a larger-than-life snowman! it took jim smith about four weeks to create it. the snowman is so big ... he used car tires for eyes and then stacked a few tires on top for a hat. smith is taking bets on how

of injuries she suffered when her house was destroyed in an avalanche. michel colville was pulled from the wreckage, three hours after friday's avalanche in missoula . her home was at the base of mount jumbo. authorities say the avalanche was triggered by a snowboarder. colville's husband is hospitalized in serious condition. an 8-year-old boy survived the quake by finding an air pocket in the mountain of snow. michigan's defense of its gay marriage ban got off to a rough start in federal court. that ban was approved by voters, ten years ago. now two women are trying to get that overturned and ease restrictions so same sex couples can adopt. michigan argues children are better off with a mother and a father. yesterday, a federal judge

dismissed the state's first witness because he lacked the qualifications to be considered an "expert witness." last week, federal rulings struck down gay marriage restrictions in texas and kentucky. a high school honor student and cheerleader in new jersey is suing her own parents. rachel canning says they threw her out of their home when she turned 18 and are now refusing to pay for her to go to college. she is suing to force her parents to pay an unpaid private school bill and her college tuition. but her parents she ran away in november because she didn't want to follow house rules. her father admits that he's stopped paying rachel's high school tuition but says she'll receive her existing college fund. >> i know she is a good kid and a rebellious teen. she has a college fund available. but it's the equivalent of going shopping at a high and a store and sending someone the bill. >> right now rachel is living with a friend. rachel has been accepted at four colleges and has applications pending at other

for over-staying his visa. reynolds paid a hundred-dollar fine for the visa violation. a more serious charge of possessing and producing pornography was dropped on a technicality. reynolds claims he was targeted by the government. and in a phone conversation with wgn, he challenged the *reporting of his arrest in zimbabwe's media. >> always one television station and is only one major newspaper in zimbabwe. i'm just concerned that it was so reckless no one said we don't have any facts. >> reynolds says zimbabwe's government is trying to silence him, because it doesn't want him to reveal the government's relationship with american businessmen. one of the sons of bulls and white sox owner jerry reinsdorf has died. david reinsdorf died yesterday, but the cause wasn't released. he was only 51. the reinsdorf family is

he's expected to call for even more tax advantages for people at the lower end of the economic scale, while eliminating some tax breaks for top earners. almost half of americans already pay *no federal income tax... while the top one-fifth of income earners pay two- thirds of the total tax bill. congress is expected to ignore obama's budget priorities. if a government watchdog group gets its way, some illinois retirees will have to live with less. the civic federation is recommending that the state start taxing retirement income, to help pay five billion dollars in old bills. the federation is also recommending that the state's temporary income tax hike be extended, instead of being allowed to expire. the group says its five-year plan would help illinois build a reserve fund to protect against future economic problems. first lady michelle obama is planning to take a trip to china later this month. according to a statement from the white house, she will bring along her mother and the first daughters, sasha and malia. the white house says it will focus on education as the first

in one of the rape cases against former n-f-l player darren sharper. sharper is charged with raping two women in new orleans. he turned himself in to authorities in los angeles, where he's also being investigated for sexual assault. similar investigations are happening in florida, arizona, and nevada. sharper played for three teams

during his 13 year career. the n-f-l network just fired him from his analyst job. a man in texas says he had to grab a sword in a duel with his girlfriend's ex. eugene thompson said he got into an argument with his live- in girlfriend saturday night... soon after her estranged husband showed up and tried to barge in. thompson pulled out his replica sword from the "legend of zelda" nintendo game. the estranged husband was i pulled it out and i sat in the doorway and he was just coming down bohol at me. he was walking right into the point where i don't know if he thought it was a toy ... >> he walked right into the end of the sword. the estranged husband was stabbed in the chest and leg and was taken to the hospital in serious condition. thompson was allegedly hit with a flower pot and treated for a head gash. no word on if any charges were filed.
