travel times up to two hours yesterday. we do have a fire at main and first expect delays in the stretch of the was the main roads are in good shape so far. >>firefighters worked to put out a fire that started in an industrial building in batavia. it happened around midnight at master cast foundry at first and mallory. the fire became so powerful at one point, parts of the roof collapsed. no one was inside the building at the time. >> i'm very nervous. we are worried about the neighborhood and having been burned out building and the other buildings catching on fire. >> the cause of the fire is being investigated. the fire chief says nobody was injured, but a few people did slip on the ice. someone opened fire with a rifle on a home in the auburn gresham neighborhood late last night, wounding a 40-year-old woman. the victim was hit in the back while inside the home in the 88- hundred block of south may. her condition hasn't been

released. police found at least six shell casings on the street outside the home. several young men at the scene refused to co-operate with detectives, according to police. parents at three local high schools are being warned about a social media app that allows people to post hurtful messages anonymously. randi belisomo is *live at new trier high school in winnetka with more. >> everything is anonymous on this app. and some comments are inflammatory and inappropriate. some schools are warning students and telling them to stay away from the app. there is no sign up, no profile, no password, an anonymous live feed of what people are saying and doing in a user's area. it is driven by users they create all the content and the report inappropriate behavior. at his school some of the post included students names according to a

letter sent to parents. the district a blocked the action from its network but students until access it through mobile providers. disciplinary action has been threatened against students using the app. the website says the users must be 17 and older to access the app and anonymity is very powerful and allows users to remove any preconceptions about them. >>libya's interim government says it has the son of late dictator moammar gadhafi in custody. saadi gadhafi was reportedly handed over by the neighboring country of *niger, where he fled during the revolution that ousted his father in 20-11. libya wants to try the former professional soccer player for stealing money and using armed intimidation while he ran the libyan soccer federation under his father's regime. secretary of state john kerry promises more talks to convince russia to hold diplomatic talks with the government of ukraine. russian leaders say it is not

a legitimate government, and that it came about as the result of a military coup. european leaders meet in brussels today to consider economic sanctions, to force russia to stop its military push into ukraine. six more american fighter planes will be dispatched, to patrol the baltic nations and protect their airspace. some chicago aldermen with ukrainian american constituents are urging the airlines to suspend flights between chicago and russia, in protest of the ukrainian crisis. but the city council has no authority over airline schedules. and neither o'hare nor midway airport currently offers direct passenger service to russia. the sister of a pregnant woman who drove a minivan carrying her three young children into the ocean in florida says she had talked about demons before leaving the house. this is what a man saw as he drove across the sand of daytona beach tuesday. police say they initially stopped 31-year-old ebony wilkerson hours before this happened.. she told them that she was

scared her husband would be coming to florida to harm her and her children. police let her ago, although they say they were concerned about her mental health. two hours later wilkerson drove into the ocean. bystanders then rushed into the water to save her and her kids. >> she just made a left turn and went right into the ocean. one of the kids was screaming for help. our moms tried to kill us. >> wilkerson's sister says she had been talking about demons that day before she left the house. she says wilkerson was going to voluntarily check herself into a hospital on monday, but decided against it. wilkerson's children have been turned over to welfare authorities. police say it's too early to say whether wilkerson will face criminal charges. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a woman was hurt after a fire broke out in a six-story retirement home in north suburban lincolnwood. it happened at 7:30 last night

at "lincolnwood place" in the seven thousand block of north mccormick boulevard. the fire reportedly started in a unit on the fourth floor. it was put out within a half- hour. the woman was taken to the hospital. firefighters say her injuries aren't life threatening. three members of a family from northbrook are in federal custody, after being accused of operating a multi-million dollar shoplifting ring out of their home. the feds say branko and lela bogdanov and their daughter julia targeted toy stores, bookstores and coffee shops across the country... then fenced stolen merchandise worth more than 7 million dollars. the suspended president of the fraternal order of police in chicago has been removed from office. the lodge's board of directors voted 15 to 11 to oust michael shields. he was suspended three months ago after arguing publicly about contract negotiations. shields called his suspension a political stunt and accuses past and current union rivals of striking fraudulent backroom deals. governor quinn announced 45 million dollars in state aid to downstate communities hit hard

by november's tornadoes. the federal government granted disaster relief for business and individual losses -- but not *municipal expenses from the storm. the federal government said that the state and local governments were perfectly capable of paying those costs. debating for the second night in a row, the republican candidates for illinois governor mixed the issues facing the state with personal attacks on each other's character and record. the hour long debate was sponsored by wgn and the tribune... and held in our studios. front runner bruce rauner and state senators kirk dillard and bill brady took turns asking voters if any of their opponents are the right man to lead illinois in such troubled times. >> it's sort of like putting a raft in charge of the cheese. bruce cannot beat pat quinn because all he has to offer our slogans. >> why are you running in the

and wounded in indianapolis, as they tried to search a house for drugs. when a "swat" team knocked on the front door and announced a search warrant last night, a man inside fired through the door. none of the officers' injuries is life-threatening... but the man inside was shot and killed. his name has not been released. police say he refused to surrender. investigators say the home was known for selling drugs in the neighborhood. cleanup continues this morning at the "philly steak and lemonade" restaurant in hammond, after a car crashed through the front door. a security camera recorded the

whole thing. police in hammond ticketed the driver -- a 31-year-old woman. they say her car slid on the snow as she tried to make a turn... and she couldn't stop it. no one was hurt. women are criticizing the decision of a high court ruled in massachusetts.. who ruled that it is not illegal to take a picture up a woman's skirt. the ruling comes after michael robertson was charged with twice taking these kinds of photos of women on the train. the so-called peeping tom statute written ten years ago says it's only illegal if the person is nude or partially nude -- which is what robertson's attorney argued last year. lawmakers are hoping to amend the statue soon. some heated words were exchanged between members of a house oversight committee on capitol hill. former i-r-s official lois lerner was called to testify, but took the fifth amendment and would not answer questions. she's accused of targeting conservative groups -- like the tea party -- and delaying their applications for tax exempt status. committee chairman, republican darrell issa, tried to adjourn the meeting, but democrat elijah cummings objected, demanding to be heard.

made her intentions clear. >> she made a left turn and just dove into the ocean with the car. one of the kids in the back seat was screaming please help us. our moms tried to kill us. >> this is day-four of the murder trial of "blade runner" oscar pistorius. the former olympic athlete admits he shot his girlfriend reeva steenkamp to death. prosecutors say he killed her after an argument... he says he thought she was a home invader. a neighbor was cross-examined this morning about his written account of hearing steenkamp's screams, and the accompanying gunshots that ultimately killed her. a general at fort bragg is expected to plead guilty to three of the eight charges against him when his military trial begins today. army brigadier general jeffrey sinclair admits he carried on a three year affair with a female captain. but he denies sexual assault allegations including forced oral sex. he's also charged with possessing pornography and fraud. sinclair is believed to be the

highest ranking member of the military to face trial for sexual assault. the senate has blocked president obama's nominee for the justice department. democrats joined republicans in voting against debo adegbile to head the department's civil rights division. he's been criticized for his role in defending a suspect in the murder of a philadelphia police officer in 19-81. in a statement, president obama called the move by the senate a *travesty based on wildly unfair character attacks.* the s.a.t. college entrance exam is getting a major overhaul. the head of the college which produces the as 80 announced the redesign yesterday. one of the biggest changes is the estate portion is optional. the test includes three sections of reading and writing, math and the essay. but the as a portion is graded on a separate scale. overall scoring will drop from 2400 back down to 1600 and there will be no penalty for wrong answers. the new test is available for students in the
