hour. the cause is still being determined. two people were on board this helicopter when it was forced to make an emergency landing in west chicago. the "robinson 44" chopper wound up in a field, about two miles east of the dupage airport. it happened around six last night. the f-a-a says both occupants of the helicopter were able to walk away from it. there's no word on what caused the chopper to go down. the defense opens its case today, in the murder trial of allan kustok. randi belisomo is live at the bridgeview courthouse with a preview. >> good morning. if she takes the stand today, her testimony could help rehab her dad's image for the jurors. they been hearing a series of women and reports of affairs with the defendant. prosecutors rested their case yesterday in the 2010 murder of his wife while his daughter, a sportscaster was at the courthouse and met with the defense for about an hour. evidence expert wrapped up three days of testimony tying together

the need for a diplomatic solution and direct talks between ukraine and russia. this as an upcoming referendum calls for the peninsula to leave ukraine and become part of the russian federation. >> the proposed referendum on the future of crimea would violate the ukrainian constitution and violate international law. any discussion about the future of ukraine must include a legitimate government of ukraine. >> putin has taken a different stance call in the interim government of ukraine illegitimate, the use of on constitutional revolution. canada's minister of foreign affairs addressed the referendum. >> russia has invaded. they are occupying with military force and no referendum can have any validity of that is taking place. >> canada expelled nine russian soldiers saying they would leave the country by the end of friday. >> we are speaking out as loudly and clearly as possible. >> canada and the european union

have also frozen assets of former officials. meanwhile, the u.s. house approved a $1 billion financial aid package for ukraine by an overwhelming vote. both sides of the aisle did it together. >> taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a region lieutenant in the "latin kings" street gang could spend the rest of his life in prison. a federal jury convicted juan amaya of racketeering conspiracy, plus weapons and drug crimes. amaya was an enforcer for the gang in the little village neighborhood. prosecutors say amaya ordered a vicious hammer attack on a teenager he blamed for the theft of drugs from a gang leader's girlfriend. elizabeth kruger is being held on one million dollars bail after police say she tried to kill herself and infant son by driving her s-u-v into oncoming traffic. it started on tuesday afternoon when kruger was involved in two hit and run crashes in burbank. while trying to get away from police, she ran her car into a

house on west 87th street. kruger faces multiple charges-- including attempted murder and aggravated battery. her son remains in the hospital in good condition. an autopsy on the body of a woman found in a sewer drain in morgan park had to be postponed while medical examiners wait for the remains to thaw. the frozen body is believed to be a woman in her 30's. it was discovered by water department workers wednesday near 107th and loomis. there is speculation that it could be latasha nevitt. she's been missing since 2011 and lived nearby. a new social media app has been disabled in the chicago area after some local high schools have banned students from using it. some students were using the app *yik-yak to anonymously cyber-bully other kids that are in a 5 to 10 mile radius. yik yak says it does not approve of people under 17 using its app. now they're working on safeguards to prevent that high school students from using it.

the republican candidates for governor had their last debate 12 days before the primary election on the 18th. well, most of them did. front runner bruce rauner didn't show up at benedictine university in west suburban lisle. his absence was duly noted by his opponents... before they moved on to discussing issues facing the state. >> he is a no show at every chance he gets to meet with students in this state. the first executive order will freeze all hiring to state and freeze all promotions and also i will put into place during the transition the performance review committee. >> we need to reinstall business economy and we do that by giving them confidence in their government. delivering on the tax cut. >> rauner *did pick up the tribune's endorsement yesterday. it read in part while any of rauner's opponents would be safe and steady choices...

their state government knowledge and experience leaves them with a cringe-worthy boast: i can get along with everyone in health mayor emanuel wants to make sure the same pothole problems dont keep popping up again. he's calling for a pothole audit of the city's side streets. the city will check on the patchwork that private contractors did last year. if the potholes are back, the city will work with the contractors to either fix them, or get its money back. >> i've had discussions in the budget hearings and on the side with the commissioners in the past and we have said we need a better warranty process for our new streets. i think the street should be able to last five or 10 years before we start seeing critters and potholes appearing. >> contractors resurfaced nearly 300 miles of streets and alleys last year. so far this year, city crews have filled more than 215 thousand potholes. the big day is a week from

a 64-year-old man reportedly fell out of a roller coaster at mount olympus resort in wisconsin. it happened just after 5-30 thursday evening. employees at the resort say the man fell some 20 feet from the roller coaster and landed on the floor. he was reportedly breathing but not moving when an ambulance arrived to transport him to a hospital. no word on his condition. a serial criminal is on the loose near the university of florida. several women in the area say a man walked up to them, urinated on them -- in public -- then ran away. it happens at all times of the day and night. >> one of the reports the female

victim felt him a bump into her a few times before he started to do it. there is just no easy way to say that. >> the university is alerting its students to be on the lookout for any strange behavior. the school's bulletin tells people, if someone gets close to you and asks for directions, back away. the massachusetts legislature passed a bill late yesterday banning the taking of photos shot up under a woman's skirt. it now goes to the governor. the vote comes after a decision by the state's supreme court, which ruled it's perfectly legal for someone to secretly take an upskirt picture. the court said the existing "peeping tom statute" applied only if the target is nude or partially nude. the debate stems from the case of a man charged twice with taking such photos of women on boston's public transit system. a woman in new york is two- million dollars richer -- thanks to a fortune cookie. 75-year-old emma duvoll from

superintendent andrew du-ross is being reprimanded after being charged with a d-u-i last month. du-gross pleaded guilty to reckless driving earlier this week. as a part of a plea deal, the d-u-i case was not pursued. the board will renegotiate his five-year contract that goes through the 2017-18 school year. du-ross agreed to undergo alcohol counseling and wear an alcohol monitoring anklet for six months. an autopsy on the body of a woman found in a morgan park drain had to be postponed while medical examiners wait for the remains to thaw. the frozen body believed to be a woman in her 30's was discovered by water department workers wednesday near 107th and loomis. there is speculation that it could be latasha nevitt.

aaron hernandez could face assault charges after a jailhouse fight. authorities say the former new england patriots star punched a fellow inmate last week. neither of the men wer seriously hurt. now, the sheriff in bristol county, massachusetts is recommending an assault-and- battery charge. it would be a misdemeanor, if it's filed. hernandez faces first-degree murder and weapons charges in his friend odin lloyd's death. he has pleaded not guilty. nasa's hubble telescope captures the mysterious disintegration of an asteroid. it's the first time an image like this has ever been recorded. scientists say the asteroid began coming apart early last year. these shots were captured over a period of several months... starting in late 2013. the crumbling asteroid broke into as many as 10 smaller pieces. but smaller is still big.
