an exceptional officer he has received 245 awards from the department. he is out of the hospital. police believe one of the people taken into custody was the shooter. the officer and others went to a home near east 92 just before 9:00 p.m. executing a search warrant in a narcotics case. the suspect named in the warrant lives in the basement of the building. while inside the house someone fired in the officers direction the bullet ricocheted and hit the officer in the for head between his eyes. a fragment is lodged in his forehead. he was taken to the hospital and transferred to northwestern memorial. the superintendent says the officer who was 34 years old has been on the force for 11 years and was days. he was talking and in good spirits. investigators recovered a weapon at the scene. >> shots were fired within the

residence by an offender. we are sure we have that person in custody we just have to sort through the people to make sure we got the right one. >> the officer comes from a family of police officers. he is out of a hospital but the superintendent says he will need to have some plastic surgery. >> two police officers in northwest suburban sleepy hollow are on paid leave after shooting and killing a man. it happened after the officers were called to a domestic disturbance at a home near maple lane and hemlock drive just before noon yesterday. officers say a man was on the driveway with a knife. police say they tried to subdue him, but he tried to cut the officers and was shot after he refused to stop. illinois state police are investigating the shooting. the man's name has not been released. there is still no sign of that missing malyasia airlines flight. the family of an american who was on the flight still has hope that he's alive. andrew spencer reports.

airline flight, interpol says at least two of the passengers had used passports stolen from an italian and an austrian to board the plane. those tickets were later to be found purchased together. theories of terrorism have been fuelled by it's too early to draw conclusions. the stolen passports may have been used for illegal immigration. as relatives of the missing week for network the family's hope for a miracle. >> i'm crossing my fingers that maybe there is a happy ending to this. >> mexican authorities say they've killed a prominent drug lord. and his death comes as a surprise to some. that's because nazario moreno was reportedly killed in a police shootout four years ago. but his body was never retrieved. when federal troops tried to arrest him yesterday, he started shooting... and he was killed by their return fire. this time, authorities say they have moreno's body. a gunman opened fire at a party in the austin neighborhood wounding six people, including a high school basketball star.

authorities say a group of people at the house party got into an argument shortly after three sunday morning. one of them left the party and returned with a gun. 19-year-old, orr high school basketball player, tyquone greer was shot in the leg. greer made an e-s-p-n list of the top ten high school recruits in illinois and helped lead his team to 23-3 record. >> lots of colleges are looking at him. hopefully he will be ok and he can go on his career. i don't know why he was out so late. i think a better question is who shot him? whoever shot him will have to answer. >> greer has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. the victims range in age from late teens to early 20's. they are all expected to survive. nobody is in police custody. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a federal jury has awarded 450-

thousand dollars to one of the men convicted of the 1993 brown's chicken massacre in palatine. james degorski filed a civil lawsuit against a cook county jail guard who degorski says beat him a few hours after arriving to the jail. laws may prevent digorski from ever getting the money. an autopsy determined a man found dead on the c-t-a's green line tracks was accidentally hit and killed by a train. service was shut down around the pulaski station for about two hours saturday morning after a conductor spotted the body on the northbound tracks. the medical examiner's office reported 31-year-old charles watkins' died of multiple injuries from being struck by a train. a c-t-a spokesperson said they will provide any available surveillance video to police. cardinal francis george says he felt a little lightheaded and unsteady on his feet, but otherwise ok after the first treatment in a new round of chemo-therapy. the 77-year-old leader of chicago's catholic archdiocese admitted during the weekend that his cancer will probably eventually be the cause of his

death. chicago starts issuing automatic speeding tickets today, for drivers near union, schaefer and rosenblum parks. these areas are considered until now, speed cameras generated only *warning letters. the tickets can run as much as 100 dollars. also starting today, warning letters start going out, for speeders the i-c-c-i academy, parsons park and sherman park. if you're still riding the c-t- a with a "chicago card," your life is about to change. the c-t-a is expected to announce by the end of the month that it's switching to a ventra-only payment system. at first, the transit agency will stop letting "chicago card" users add money to their cards. then they'll have to transfer any cash balances on those cards to new ventra cards. the c-t-a is expected to lay out a timetable for the full conversion to ventra. drivers parking on chicago streets will soon be able to pay parking meters using their smartphones. the mayor's office says a new parking meter payment app will be tested under a pilot program downtown this spring and then

rolled out throughout the city at a later date. drivers will enter their meter number and the amount of time they want to pay for.. then it will register with the meter. printed receipts that are normally left on the dashboard will not be needed with this new app. hundreds of people in grand rapids michigan participated a 5-k run.... wearing their underwear on the outside. the "fun-derwear run" was part of "gilda's laughfest," in commemoration of saturday night live comic and cancer victim, gilda radner. the event helped raise funds for those battling cancer. radner was a michigan native. she was married to actor gene wilder when she died at the age of 42. much too young. >> that look like a good time. >> of you'll be wanting to shed some layers as we are headed for the warmest day of 2014. we do have some rain on the radar. just a few sprinkles. it will

killed, along with a bartender and another customer. a fourth victim was airlifted to a hospital. a pre-saint patrick's day party in massachusetts got a little out of hand. the "blarney blowout" is an annual fixture near the university of massachusetts in amherst. but violence broke out early saturday morning, and continued yesterday morning, until police moved in with pepper spray, and arrested 52 people. nearly a dozen of them were jailed. no serious injuries were reported... but a lot of people were hit by flying bottles and bricks. the northern california coast rumbled and rolled last night, as a major earthquake hit the area. it registered 6-point-9... and it was centered 50 miles off the coast near eureka. and it could be felt across a wide area. several smaller aftershocks have already been reported. but there were no tsunami warnings issued. we're awaiting word on damage and injuries. new york's cardinal timothy dolan took to the airwaves

"marriage is between a man and a woman" but he said the church should look at different cases. dolan said the pope simply wants to look into reasons why more and more states are approving civil unions and gay marriage. two drivers in california were stung by more than 600 bees after their cars crashed into a tree. two cars collided in a minor accident sunday afternoon. at least one of the cars hit a tree dislodging a large bee hive, releasing thousands of bees. authorities say the women were attacked as they were exchanging insurance information. the 51-year-old woman, ran to

predict who is likely to suffer from alzheimer's disease. doctors studied the blood of healthy elderly people, looking for fatty molecules called lipids. those with lower levels of lipids were more likely to develop alzheimer's. the test was accurate 90 percent of the time. more testing is needed. a small town in the colorado rockies is about to become the home of the country's first marijuana club. in the town of nederland , just up the mountain from boulder, "club ned" will offer pot smokers a place to hang out, instead of smoking weed in public. it'll be a lot like a bar -- except with marijuana instead of alcohol. like other private clubs, the new pot club will prohibit the smoking of regular cigarettes. and it'll have a code of conduct that discourages members from *driving after smoking pot. >> who thinks the population of colorado is going to grow in the next few years? >> i couldn't imagine this being an influence ... >> we can imagine the 55 degrees

he had not seen his son for two years before the shooting and no one saw violent tendencies in his personality. >> runner" oscar pistorius is back in session in pretoria, south africa. pistorius is charged with murdering his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp last year. he says he mistook her for a home invader. defense attorneys are cross- examining the first security guard to arrive at the athlete's home. pieter baba testitied friday that pistorius called neighborhood security and said "everything is fine." but baba said he arrived to find pistorius carrying his girlfriend's body down the stairs. peru has agreed to extradite joran van der sloot to the united states when he finishes serving a 28-year murder sentence. that's according to a report by the peruvian news agency. van der sloot is a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of alabama teen natalee holloway. she went missing on a trip to aruba. u-s officials want to try him on charges he extorted money from holloway's mother by offering her bogus information. van der sloot was convicted of murdering a woman in his lima hotel room in 20-12.

low levels of radiation from the fukushima nuclear disaster could reach ocean waters along the u-s west coast next month. scientisits predict that the radiation will be at extremely low levels that won't harm humans or the environment. but they're are calling for more monitoring. right now federal agencies don't test pacific coast seawater for radiation. this comes three years after the devastating japan tsunami that resulted in a nuclear accident. a photographer taking souvenir pictures for skydivers catches a frightening collision between a small plane and a parachute. the 87 year old pilot was practicing take offs and landings near lakeland, florida when his small cessna became wrapped up in the lines of the skydiver's parachute. both the plane and the skydiver hurtled to the ground, but amazingly, neither was seriously hurt. the f-a-a and the polk county
