the snow is falling with near blizzard conditions. we're *live with how it'll affect the morning commute. a jury took two hours to reach a verdict in the murder trial of allan kustok. and new questions are raised about the pilot of the missing malaysia airlines plane. good morning. i'm dan ponce. and i'm erin mcelroy. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. whether it is the big story. there are some schools closed and a lot of schools opening late today because of the snow. they are scrolling at the bottom of your screen. the complete list is on our website .... wgn tv dot com slash closings. tim mcgill is in for demetrius with a check of our weather. >> a sloppy start foreshore. heavy wet snow is falling as much as 4 in. in some areas. the

winter storm warning continues until 10:00 a.m.. winter weather advisories until 7:00 p.m.. winter storm warnings until 4:00 in some areas. temperatures are freezing the will drop to about 20 this afternoon. wind chill in the teens and 20s but visibility is reduced as the snow is falling heavy south of the city. snowfall coming down pretty good right now especially from the city to the south along 80 that's where we will see the have the band's setting up. we will soon in to enhance and you can see the darker shade of blue just south of city down. the downers grove area and then a band of heavy precipitation all the way to morris. this will continue through the next hour.

kicking off rapidly. but the snow is falling at one-2 in. per hour we've had reports of lightning and thunder with the snow. it's a big mess. how much damage will be today? let's find out the traffic. >> we are seen drifting snow, very heavy snow and in many cases icy road conditions. use caution this morning. reports that heading in and out of northwest indiana is particularly bad. the snow is going to linder further and longer. you really want to watch your speed and in many cases we are expecting to see double commute times. let's head over to the illinois state police sgt who is on the phone and will give us a update on the worst regions. where are most of your troops going? >> we are experiencing a lot of spin outs and that's mostly to

really piling up. some lanes have at least a few inches covering them. it's making it difficult to see the lane markers and visibility is low because that snow is coming down have the and fast and in some cases it is blowing. we've been out for a few minutes. we have not yet seen a snowplow but the state trooper did say it's difficult to remove the snow under these conditions. the best advice we have is to take it slow. right now at this hour not a lot of traffic. obviously that is not an issue yet it's just the snow piling up creating conditions where you cannot see the roads. if public transportation is an option, i suggest you take it. we will be back with another update. >>slushy roads may have

signs are snow-covered as well. visibility is extremely limited due to the blizzard conditions which really kicked up around 2:00 this morning. there are times even before the heaviest snowfall when a semi truck crashed into a streetlight at 79 and western blocking all westbound lanes for a while. on the dan ryan a cargo van was involved in a roll over incident at 59. no injuries reported but even tollway veterans say getting around this morning will be a challenge. >> it was bad coming across indiana and illinois is no better. >> it is staying sloppy out. it's not terrible but traffic is moving pretty slow. >> you can see the snow falling at a good clip. this is in your

face snow. it's really blowing around. that's what is making getting around quite tricky. this is a very wet snow. once it hits you you get wet. you can see the trees are snow-covered. this is the type of snow that falls and sticks. that is what is making the roads especially treacherous this morning. back to you >> a lot of memorable quotes there. nine heavy snow is falling in our area ... and creating near blizzard conditions at times. this is video from the river north neighborhood. that's really heavy what they call heart attack snow. it's so heavy that it's making our cameras act strange. the national weather service has issued a winter storm warning that ends at one this afternoon. air travel in and out of o'hare and midway will likely be impacted. the city deployed all of its

snowplows and salt trucks. to follow the city's snow fleet in real time ... check out chicago shovels dot org. the illinois department of transportation is using its fleet of more than 17-hundred plows across the state to clear roads. i-dot says it is taking steps throughout the morning to make sure the roads are drivable. the illinois tollway has had its entire fleet of 182 plows on the road throughout the night as well. a spokeswoman for i-dot says it has an adequate supply of salt for this storm, and it can quickly get more salt if needed. illinois state police say they are watching to see if they need to activate emergency resources. metra is putting its winter weather plan in effect. crews started working at one o'clock this morning to get a head start on clearing and salting platforms for rush hour. and more train crews are put in place to make up for staffing shortages or emergencies. metra will also refuel trains at outlying stations to prevent delays. wendella boat tours will start later than usual this year, since their boats are stuck in ice. the company says its fleet is stuck in a shipyard on the

calumet river, on the city's far south side. the ice around it is up to 20- inches thick. lake michigan is also too icy to get to. that means there will be no tour on the chicago river as it gets dyed green for saint patrick's day. wendella tours may now begin march 28-th at the earliest. the company says this has never happened in its 80 year history. stay with wgn all morning for the latest weather developments. you know we like to blame this all on to him since he is here. >> snowfall totals it's early but i have reports of two-4 in. already. mainly in the south suburbs. the snow is coming down at about 1 in. an hour. it could be heavier but we have about only one more hour of this moderate to heavy snow. winter storm warning to continue for the areas in pink including the city and then to kankakee county. winter storm warning in

227-million dollar high rise under construction in san francisco. the building collapsed after the fire burned for several hours. nearby buildings were evacuated as 150 firefighters worked to

contain the fire. one firefighter suffered a minor injury. the building was supposed to open in august, and its fire sprinklers had not been activated. investigators will begin looking for the cause of the fire this morning. a new question about the co- pilot of a malaysian passenger jet, may shed some light on why the plane mysteriously disappeared saturday. investigators now speculate, the plane was approaching vietnam, en route from malaysia to china, when it made a hard left turn and crossed the malay peninsula, heading toward an *indonesian island. the plane's transponder was abruptly shut off, so it couldn't communicate with traffic controllers. now a woman who once flew with the plane's co-pilot, says he invited her into the cockpit. >> inaudible >> malaysia airlines is trying to confirm the woman's story. if a crew member opened the cockpit door saturday, he could have let a terrorist or hijacker in.

but so far, investigators can only speculate on what happened to the plane, and where it is now. as the search continues officials are not sure if it was a mechanical malfunction, hijacking or terrorism. >>taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. allan kustok is headed for prison, perhaps for the rest of his life, for murdering his wife. a jury took less than two hours to convict the businessman from orland park of shooting his wife anita in her bed, four years ago. jurors didn't believe kustok's claim that his wife took her own life. he'll face sentencing april 17- th. the wiretaps that were not played at the rod blagojevich trial will remained sealed during the appeals process. federal prosecutors used secretly recorded phone conversations to convict the former governor of mis-using his powers. blagojevich says he would have been cleared if *all the tapes were played in court. the appeals court says the transcripts of those tapes will be admitted into evidence, but they won't be public record unless the judge made an error. authorities are looking for two gunmen who shot and critically wounded a retired chicago

police sergeant during a home invasion. 73-year-old elmer brown was in his southeast side house with his wife. two robbers came in through an unlocked door and demanded he take them to his safe. when the safe wouldn't open, they shot brown in the neck ... then ran. his wife was unharmed. brown is listed in critical but stable condition. a couple is asking for help finding two dogs that disappeared from their northwest side home after a burglary. when the couple returned to their home in the 31 hundred block of north sacramento avenue...they found the door open and the house ransacked yesterday morning. three computers and an i-pad were missing, along with two french bulldogs. the couple is unsure if the dogs were stolen or ran out after the burglary. one of the bulldogs is deaf and takes medicine every day for severe allergies. weather is our top story so let's go over to tim for the latest. >> heavy wet snow across the area the wind is picking up but it's so heavy we're not seeing a

lot of blowing snow which is the good news. winter storm warnings for these counties until 11. winter weather advisory no. 4 lake county until 7:00. winter storm warning for lockport until 4:00 p.m.. heaviest snow 3-6 in. when it's all done. temperatures are hovering around freezing which is why the snow is so wet. we will fall out a bit into the afternoon we will drop to about 20. moderate to heavy snow data half a mile visibility in joliet. this note is really tapering off rapidly to the north but it's continuing from lake county south. zooming in at the radar we can show you the heavier band of snow in burbank and evergreen park and south of the city toward morris which is where it's coming down at one-2 in. per hour. another hour and a

half of this heavy snow until it tapers off pretty quickly. most of the snow will be out by seven or 8:00. temperatures will fall even some peaks of son will come through after three-6 in. of snow falls. rain showers tonight. it's action partly cloudy tonight we get down to the single digits. 35 for the high tomorrow. right around 40 on saturday it would drop to 28 on sunday and that we're back up near 50 on tuesday. >> we have a few pictures of traffic. it's pretty much snow- covered roads out there for the majority of the commuters. here's the kennedy. it's quiet. you can see even though they've done a lot of plowing the roads are covered. 80-94 to the south and central lots of brake lights

slash closings. let's go to tim mcgill, who is in for demetrius, for a check of the weather. hi, tim. them and just what we need. two- 4 in. already especially south. downers grove is 4.1. winter storm warning continues for most of the area out through kendall county. that goes until 11:00 a.m.. winter storm warning until 4:00 p.m.. advises for these counties until 7:00. those areas to the north will despaired the most. but to the city and the south 3-6 in.. more snow coming down for the next hour or so it will taper off after that. we are about freezing right now because this snow is heavy and wet it's not blowing but we do have reduced visibility down to eight tenths of a mile. half a mile in

joliet and morris. the corridor along 80 a special edition ryan has the heaviest snow. ending across the far northern suburbs but still moderate to heavy snow to the south. we will enhance the radar and sherry the band of heavy snow from oakland south of the city back to frankfurt. we have about one-2 in. per hour which will taper off the wind will pick up and temperatures will drop to about 20 degrees. snow and early may be some son later. are we make 35. maybe morning flurry but otherwise we are partly sunny and partly cloudy. a lot of this will melt off by the end of the week. any good news on traffic? >> a number of accidents and slide office this morning all because of a very heavy snow that has been continuing to fall

through the city. taking a peek at the dan ryan, not far away we've had to separates lot of spirit one at the 31st street ramp. that still causing delays. also at the 55 interchange and one of 31 looks like there is a light pole that went down and it's blocking the ramp. precipitation a lot of that froze and snow on top of that which is making the ramp so treacherous this morning. watch your speed as you head out today. more on this but first let's go out to tonya life at the mannheim road exit. >> we got out of the car to show you that a car had slid off the off ramp at the mannheim exit heading south on the outbound eisenhower. if you can see the exit is closed. they are trying to clear this area right now but looked down at the at snow

>> overall system wide we are seeing issues across the board. tonya hit the nail on the head. lots of blowing and drifting snow in certain parts of the area. her emergency traffic patrolman will be busy this morning. our trucks and plows have been out since late last night. pretty much all hands are on deck the he assure the roadways are clear. we have blowing and drifting snow that appears to be a problem. the lane markings on the roadways are pretty difficult so we are telling everyone this morning if you don't have to drive, don't. public transportation is available. if you do have to drive, take it slow give those ploughs plenty of space. if you need to travel through the state, check your ride. >> let's talk about the ramps. with had a few stops in the last 20 minutes on the ryan. we hear

many of the signs are snow- covered as well. a lot of drivers can't even see the exit and the visibility is extremely limited. blizzard like conditions at this hour. there really kicked up around 2:00 a.m. and they have been nonstop since. there are incidents before the heaviest snowfall, a semi crashed into a street light on around midnight blocking the lanes for a while on the ryan. a cargo and flipped over at 59th. no injuries reported in those incidents. tollway veterans say getting around will be a challenge. >> it was pretty bad coming across indiana. >> is staying sloppy out there. it's not terrible but traffic is moving about 40 mi. per hour. >> we have been in different

years ago. that opens the possibility that a crew member on saturday's flight may have opened the cockpit door to a hijacker or terrorist. investigators say it's only speculation... and there is still no sign of the plane. the new prime minister of ukraine meets with president obama today at the white house. the visit comes, as the country's crimean region prepares for a sunday vote to secede and join the russian federation. obama considers the election unconstitutional. today's meeting is meant to show russia that america stands with the new ukrainian leadership. a man from calumet heights is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery after shooting a chicago police officer in the head. prosecutors say james garland fired a shot sunday night as officers served a search warrant at a home on the city's south side. the bullet ricocheted and hit the officer in the forehead - almost between the eyes. he survived. investigators say garland was inside the home with several other people. he's scheduled to appear in

bond court later today. allan kustok is headed for prison, perhaps for the rest of his life, for murdering his wife. a jury took less than two hours to convict the orland park businessman of shooting his wife anita in her bed, four years ago. jurors didn't believe kustok's claim that his wife took her own life. he'll face sentencing april 17- th. a leading democratic senator is accusing the c-i-a of spying on congress. diane feinstein chairs the senate intelligence committee. the panel was investigating the c-i-a's detention and interrogation of terror suspects after nine-eleven. she says the c-i-a inappropriately searched senate computers for an internal c-i-a report. the c-i-a chief denies it. both sides are asking the justice department to look into whether any laws were broken. the president did some shopping in new york city. a saleswoman recommended a v neck sweater for the first lady. the president ended up with a crew next saying the next might show off his daughter's shoulders. also picked out to work out a shirt for the first lady. after checking out he praised the store for volunteering to raise

a forensic scientist is now testifying at the oscar pistorius murder trial. pistorius says he thought he was shooting a burglar, when he shot and killed his girlfriend in his bathroom. he also says he was on his prosthetic legs, when he used a cricket bat to break open the door to get to her. today a forensic scientist demonstrated how swinging the bat left marks on the door. he said the marks on the door

are at a height where pistorius could not have been wearing his legs, like he says he was. george zimmerman's parents are suing comedian roseanne barr - saying a tweet she sent forced them from their florida home. robert and gladys zimmerman say barr encouraged "vigilante justice" and tweeted out their home address in march 2012 -- one month after the shooting death of trayvon martin but before george zimmerman was arrested in the case. the zimmermans say the tweet forced them to flee their home in the middle of the night and they haven't been able to return. george zimmerman was acquitted in the case. barr has not commented about the lawsuit. there is yet another mystery surrounding the death of a woman whose body was found at her home in pontiac, michigan. experts believe pia farrenkopf had been dead for six years when remains, believed to be hers, were found in her garage last wednesday. but now, election records show, someone voted in her name in michigan's election for governor *four years ago... two

frank ocean has some harsh words for chipotle. he wrote the company a check... and take a look what he put in the memo section. the singer refunded chipotle's money after they sued him for backing out of one of their commercials. ocean says he thought the ad was to promote responsible farming -- not the company itself. chipotle says they haven't gotten the check yet, but they would love to put the matter to rest. kristen bell says she peed in a jar while in her oscar dress. she made the admission on a daytime talk show. bell said the gown was so tight and uncomfortable to sit in, that a mason jar was just easier. she added, she didn't know how long the ceremony would be. did she say she did it in her seat or in the bathroom? she did not clarify. >> 3-6 in. today. after today we get below freezing. 50 degrees on friday.
