chicago police officers shoot a man they say was waving a gun on the south side. cardinal george has been in the hospital for days -- being treated for flu-like symptoms ... the latest in a *live report. and, the polls open in just a couple hours for voters in illinois' primary election. good morning. i'm dan ponce. and i'm erin mcelroy. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. demetrius ivory has a check of our weather. >> today is a keeper. temperatures have been up and down. this is as good as it's going to get. we keep on wintering after today. we will see high temperatures in the low 50s. then comes the rain and more snow in time for wednesday. the warm-up will be here for a

the roads. no accidents reported. even though they are starting some of the spring construction projects, nothing is causing many delays on the expressway's or tollways just yet. >>an oak forest police officer has died from injuries he suffered in a car crash. 62-year-old james morrissy was 34-year veteran of the department. he was pronounced dead last night at advocate christ medical center in oak lawn. his fellow officers lined up outside the hospital. morrissy was on-duty and on his way to assist another officer yesterday. that's when his squad car was struck on the driver's side at the intersection of cicero avenue and 160th street. no charges are pending in the crash. morrissy is survived by his wife and three sons. a chicago police officer shot and wounded a man in englewood. officers responded to a call about a man waving a gun around 61-st and sangamon last night. the man ran up to a balcony and put the gun to his head. officers tried to talk him down, but they say he made a

threat instead. >> at the point the offender said you have to shoot me or i will shoot you. at that point the officer behind the suv fires two shots hits the offender in the side twice. >>the man was able to walk out of the building on his own. police say the man told them that he didn't need help getting into the ambulance because he had been shot before. francis cardinal george has been hospitalized with flu-like symptoms. nancy loo is live at loyola university medical center in maywood with the latest. >> good morning. he has been here since friday when he came in for a routine checkup. doctors determined he was dehydrated so he has been hospitalized since. in a statement the archdiocese says the cardinal is hooked to an ivy to replenish fluid and administer antibiotics. a spokesperson says the

hospitalization is out of an abundance of caution. cardinal george had told doctors he was suffering from flu like symptoms. 10 days ago the archdiocese's revealed that the cardinals bladder cancer had returned. he has been undergoing a new round of more aggressive chemotherapy. he said to be alert, responsive and in good spirits. he has been doing paperwork. the situation has forced the cancellation of a trip to washington where he was supposed to attend a board meeting for the catholic university of america. the archdiocese expects him to be released from here either tomorrow or thursday. >>vice president biden is going to poland and lithuania next week to meet with leaders about ukraine and russia. that announcement came after the u-s and europe imposed travel bans and froze assets of russian and crimean officials.

crimea voted to separate itself from ukraine on sunday. today, russian president putin notified his parliament about crimea's request to join russia. but western powers say this is all illegal and accuse russian troops of taking over the area. the obama administration is now freezing assets and banning entry by russian officials and their inner circle. >> we are imposing sanctions on specific individuals responsible for over undermine the sovereignty and the government of ukraine. we are making it clear there are consequences for their actions. >>ukraine's prime minister tells c-n-n that he will never accept the separation of crimea into russia. he says there's hope for a diplomatic solution but he fears more russian troops coming into his country. another piece of evidence in the malaysian jetliner disappearance appears to point toward the pilot or co-pilot. the new york times reports, the plane's sudden sharp left turn toward the indian ocean was pre- programmed into the plane's guidance computer -- either in the air, or prior to the flight. that would appear to rule out speculation that the turn was

made in response to a mechanical problem. some form press is reporting that the pilot's family moved out of the house the day after the flight. ruled out the possibility that the plane was hijacked by a chinese passenger. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. police are still questioning the mother and boyfriend of a toddler who was found dead over the weekend. an autopsy revealed 17-month old amierah roberson died from head trauma. her body was found by an abandoned building in riverdale a few hours before her mother reported her missing. the family says the mother dropped off amierah at her boyfriend's, on her way to work. t-v pitchman kevin trudeau will spend the next ten years in federal prison for lying to consumers about the benefits of a weight-loss plan. that's the sentence prosecutors requested. at his sentencing hearing, trudeau called his arrest and trial a wake-up call, and said he'll never do it again. trudeau still hasn't repaid the 37 million dollars he was fined in *civil court.

the only teen charged as an adult in the videotaped beating of a curie high school student, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery ... and was sentenced to time served. 19-year-old raymond palomino was one of seven teens charged with aggravated battery and robbery in the 2012 attack that went viral online. the 17-year-old victim was lured into an alley by a girl, then beaten and robbed. blasting will resume *today at a quarry in southwest suburban mccook, after ice delayed plans to start up again yesterday. work was suspended at hanson material service quarry in november, after an earth quake was recorded seconds after a routine blast. but, experts have not linked the two. it's primary election day today and polls open statewide at 6 a-m. for election - including u-s senate, governor and state treasurer. the several republican

candidate's campaign headquarters and analysis from our trusted experts. then, *live coverage begins at 7 on wgn as the results roll in... it's also online at *wgn t-v dot-com slash- decision 20-14.* the polling location at the historic swedish american museum in chicago's andersonville neighborhood has been moved after inspectors found the water tower on top of the museum is damaged and needs to be removed. the landmark blue and yellow water tower is the latest casualty of our brutal winter. inspectors say it was damaged after the water inside froze. the museum will be closed until the tower is removed later this week. voters who normally vote at this location will be sent to a church nearby. a driver lost control of his car, and drove it into a retention pond in lincolnshire. luckily for him, a good samaritan saw it happen, and used a rope to pull the victim from the water. it happened on northbound milwaukee avenue at knightsbridge. the driver suddenly crossed the southbound lanes before rolling into the water. the good samaritan left the scene, and hasn't been seen since.

a third person has died of injuries she sustained when an alleged drunk driver plowed into a crowd of people in austin, texas. it happened last week during the city's "south by southwest festival." the third victim is identified as 26-year-old sandy thuy le. suspect rashad owens remains in jail on three-million dollars bail... on capital murder charges. police say owens tried to outrun officers after driving the wrong way. witnesses and police say he never once hit his brakes as he plowed through the pedestrians. a father is charged with biting off part of his baby son's nose. 18 year old joshua cooper is being held on bail in california. he's charged with aggravated mayhem, child abuse and child endangerment. prosecutors say cooper got so mad about his one-month old son's crying, that he bit his nose. the father is due back in court in a few weeks. the pregnant woman who reportedly drove her three children in her mini-van into the ocean off florida was seen

punching her stomach after her arrest. ebony wilkerson appeared in a florida courtroom yesterday. prosecutors say they fear for the life of unborn child after wilkerson was seen hitting her stomach. she is seven months pregnant and is being kept in the psych unit of the daytona beach jail. wilkerson's attorneys asked to have her moved into a medical area to be close to doctors. the judge did not rule on the request. wilkerson is charged with attempted murder and child abuse after she drove into the ocean earlier this month. chicagoans are used to seeing the chicago river dyed green for saint patrick's day. but a prankster in oklahoma city used the same technique to add some unwanted color to the fountain at a popular botanical garden attraction. what he didn't know, was that he was caught on surveillance video, pouring powdered dye into the water. it'll cost as much as ten thousand dollars to clean the stains off the concrete and the birds that use the pond. a 22-pound housecat that captured headlines after his owners called 9-1-1 when he

trapped them in a bedroom ... is now receiving therapy. this is lux. his family decided to turn him over to animal services on monday, more than a week after he scratched their 8-month-old baby. they say that's when lux went ballistic, cornering them in their apartment in oregon. a shelter spokeswoman described what they've noticed about lux since he arrived. >> this is a high strung cat. he's in a high stress situation. there are loud and noisy trains near their home. the have a small child who is learning to crawl. is a very vocal child. cats like this, they can only take so much. >> lux's owners have not decided on whether to give him up for good. if the catalog to me in my bedroom for a few days i would be thrilled. i would adopt the

guidance computer -- either in the air, or prior to the flight. that would appear to rule out speculation that the turn was made in response to a mechanical problem. the wall street journal is refuting a foreign press report that the pilot's family moved out of his house, the day before the flight. separately, *china has now ruled out the possibility that the plane was hijacked by a chinese passenger. one crew member is dead and eight others are missing after two cargo ships collided in japan's tokyo bay. it happened early this morning. one ship sank after the collision. that ship's 20 crew members were all chinese nationals. 12 of them were rescued - but one died after suffering a heart attack. a search is now underway for the missing crew members. chicago police are asking for help finding a woman who grabbed a 9-year-old girl after school, in the little village neighborhood last week. the girl was outside an elementary school in the 28- hundred block of west 24th, when the woman called the girl's name ... and said the girl's

expect a low voter turnout of about 27 percent - because it is a non-presidential election year. a crime scene photographer is being cross examined at the oscar pistorius murder trial. pistorius is charged with murdering his girlfriend at his home in south africa last year. he says he opened fire through a closed bathroom door because he thought a burglar was inside. proceedings are running late today for an unknown reason. yesterday a photographer testified that seven-thousand photos were taken at the home. the defense has been trying to show that police tainted the crime scene and the investigation. federal prosecutors want to keep some autopsy pictures away from the accused boston marathon bomber. dzhokhar tsarnaev is in a federal prison awaiting his trial in november. he's charged in the marathon bombings that killed three people and injured 260 others. prosecutors are asking a federal judge to only let the defense see pictures that will be used at trial and sentencing. they say giving access to every picture would re-victimize families. the defense didn't comment on the prosecution's request. the head of general motors is laying out company-wide changes

in the wake of a massive recall linked to at least 12 deaths. the automaker is facing congressional and even criminal probes. in a video released yesterday, c-e-o mary barra says her company is now moving faster to fix potential problems. ed payne has more. >> something went wrong with the process. terrible things happened. as a member of the gm family and a mom with family of my own, this really hits home. >> the gm ceo got personal talking about the ignition switch defect, an issue linked to at least 12 deadly crashes that sparked the recall of 1.6 million vehicles. gm under fire for not issuing the recall until last month even though they knew about the problem in 2004. her comments, on the same day gm announced another round of large-scale recall. this time the issue is with a possibly faulty air bags and overheating brakes. another 1 million and a

half vehicles involved. no injuries are linked to the potential problems. the new recall is proof that have learned from past mistakes. >> we are doing our reviews again resolving them quickly. you'll take care of all the customers and continue to apply what we have learned. >> dealing with the fallout has been a major early challenge for the first woman to lead a major carmaker when she took the reins in january. but for those who lost loved ones in the crashes related to the recall, it's little comfort. >> i am overwhelmed by anchor. if we had just known this information my daughter would still be here today. >>the r-t-a, c-t-a, metra and pace boards would all be eliminated, if a state panel gets its way. a public transit task force, appointed by governor quinn, is recommending that a new transit super-agency replace all of the existing boards, and oversee the entire chicagoland transit

network. the panel says the current structure pits board against board, while a single authority could more easily coordinate transit policy and funding. chicago taxi drivers are keeping an eye on seattle, as they fight to regulate the city's rideshare companies. seattle's city council just voted unanimously to cap the number of rideshare drivers for companies like uber-x, lyft and sidecar. the vote means there can be no more than 150 rideshare drivers on the road at any given time. the programs allow people to arrange rides with a smartphone app. taxi companies don't like the competition, and claim the rideshare companies aren't properly insured. the t-v show "the good wife" is getting grief for getting it's facts wrong about the blagojevich trial. on sunday's episode, investigators are trying to get the fictional governor's former attorney to turn on him ... in a voter fraud investigation. the agent references the case against former governor rod blagojevich, saying his lawyers eventually talked knowing that attorney-client privilege would

probation for attacking a photographer at los angeles international airport last summer. this is video of the incident. the rapper's lawyer entered a no-contest plea to misdemeanor battery in court on monday. in addition to the probation, the judge ruled west must take anger management classes ... perform 250 hours of community service, and pay restitution to the victim. the victim, who has filed a civil suit against west, wanted him to serve jail time.
