one person was killed, after a van carrying at least four children crashed into a semi- truck in elwood. it happened yesterday evening near mississippi avenue on route 53. police haven't released many details on the crash. a witness says the truck was travelling northbound when the van pulled in front of it. several victims were taken to the hospital. their conditions have not been released. governor quinn now knows who he'll be facing in the general election in november. bruce rauner won the republican nomination, in what turned out to be a close race. nancy loo is live in the loop with more. nancy? >> the race is set and both candidates will be out and about today with governor clinton planning to be at this construction site later this morning to tout the restart of work here. his work is cut out for him now in the general

election in november. the republican businessman bruce ruaner narrowly defeats occur, dillard. bill brady and treasurer dan referred were a distant third and fourth. in the meantime, the win comfortably with 72 percent of the vote. activist that 20 percent. it is quinn against rauner and he's ready to rumble. >> he has driven up unemployment, risen our taxes and 60%. jacked up real-estate tax well home values went down. shredded our social services and he defunded our schools of thousands of children are trapped in failing schools. he is a failure and we need to get him out. >> pushing term limits for

lawmakers and lower taxes. the long campaign wrote to november is sure to include more jabs. he said there's more work to do on the state's dire financial situation. quinn vowed to continue pushing for a higher minimum wage of seemingly taking a shot at his wealthy republican opponent. >> i believe in everyday people. i think the governor has to have a heart. i may not have nine mansions and one house. i am not a billionaire. and never will be. i'm not part of the 1% and never will be there. i'm not even part of the 0.01%. >> clan has already debuted a new tv ad attacking his opponents shift against and for

a higher minimum wage. voters will be seeing a lot more tv ads from these men through november. back to you. >> kirk dillard came close, but he black senator durbin will face an opponent with deep pockets in november. jim oberweis ... owner of oberweis dairy ... defeated doug truax by 12 percent of the vote in the republican primary. that result was closer than expected. oberweis lost five campaigns before finally winning a state senate seat in 20-12. but his focus has been on the general election all along. >> it's always been about replacing dick durbin in the senate. >> challenger will guzzardi defeated toni berrios in her bid to hold onto a state house seat in the 39th district on the city's northwest side. berrios had the support of her father, cook county assessor joe berrios, who is also the county's democratic chairman.

state party chairman and house speaker mike madigan also backed her campaign. guzzardi says he's eager to get to springfield and begin working on the issues that matter to his district and the entire state. >> i think we are concerned about the quality of our public schools and the future of our state's economy and fundamental injustice in our society. we need leadership in springfield to build coalitions to fight for the issues. >> state representative darlene senger won in the 11th congressional district. she grabbed 38-percent of the vote ... beating out grundy county board member. 33-percent of the vote. senger says she's ready to go up against incumbent democrat bill foster. >> i am looking forward to facing him and beating him and basically winning the race. this demographic for the district is 55 percent women. when you think about it, women in the house are really concerned about health care. looking at the problems we're going to have with obama

care and how it will affect women. >> tom dart has effectively been re-elected sheriff of cook county. in a field of four candidates, dart won the democratic primary by a more than 5-to-1 margin over his closest competitor, bill evans. no republicans are running... so dart will be unchallenged in the general election. as expected, voter turnout across cook county was at or near record lows. barely 13 percent of eligible voters in chicago bothered to cast ballots. voter apathy was driven by a lack of contested high-profile races. in the suburbs, the turnout was only slightly better -- around 15 percent. more republicans than democrats cast ballots in the suburbs, because the republican ballot for governor featured the close race between bruce rauner and kirk dillard. on non-binding ballot issues, voters in chicago supported limits on the capacity of gun magazines, and a prohibition on guns in restaurants that serve alcohol. voters opposed an increase in taxi fares. a routine takeoff by a news helicopter suddenly went wrong, plunging the chopper onto a downtown seattle street. the pilot and a photographer were killed.

a man whose car was hit by the chopper suffered severe burns and is in critical condition. camera man bill strothman had worked at k-o-m-o since 1979. gary fitzner was a veteran pilot. a spokesman with the n-t-s-b says witnesses reported hearing an "unusual noise" from the chopper before the crash. there is growing evidence that the disappearance of a malaysian jetliner was an intentional act. experts now say it appears the plane had already made a pre- programmed turn toward the indian ocean, moments *before the co-pilot said good night to air traffic controllers. two minutes later, the plane's transponder was shut off. now, we learn, people in the maldives islands, in the indian ocean, reported seeing a low- flying plane, just hours later. there's no way to know whether it was the malaysian plane, flying low to avoid radar. officials in thailand also revealed radar picked up a plane about the same time the jet disappeared. a spokesman said that wasn't shared earlier because malaysia's first request for information was not precise. russia has announced it will take over crimea, despite the

disapproval from the u-s and europe. russia's parliament gave president vladimir putin a standing ovation as he made that announcement. that came after the white house and europe imposed travel bans and financial sanctions on dozens of russian officials. russia remains confident that crimea is rightfully theirs after it voted to separate from ukraine. >> in our hearts we know that crimea has always been and always will remain a part of russia. >> it doesn't legitimize taking what you want because you want it. or because you are angry about the end of the cold war or the end of the soviet union. >>one ukrainian soldier was killed after russian forces reportedly stormed a base in crimea. ukrainian forces are being ordered to defend themselves. several hundred pro-russian supporters broke into a ukrainian naval headquarters today, and raised the russian flag. *400-million dollars was up for grabs last night in the mega-millions drawing. .. and two people got the golden tickets! unfortunately they weren't

in gang crossfire following an argument. she was not the intended victim. the girl was taken to the hospital in critical condition. so far, no arrest have been made. a judge denied bail to the man arrested after the standoff on joe felton is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery. prosecutors say felton led police on a high speed chase that led to several collisions on sunday. felton is also wanted for his wife's murder in georgia. a window washer was seriously injured after falling through a grate in deerfield. the man was hanging from the building in the 17-hundred block of lake cook road.. when he fell to the bottom of a 20 foot deep ventilation shaft an ambulance rushed him to lutheran general hospital. deerfield police are investigating. construction begins soon, on an ambitious plan to relieve the bottleneck for lakefront runners, bikers and skaters as they pass navy pier. practically everyone has to stop for a light at illinois or grand avenue. but a new raised bike and pedestrian trail -- the "navy pier flyover" -- will soon be erected, stretching from north of the ohio street beach, to south of the chicago river. the entire project will take four years to complete. a judge is delaying a second

psychiatric exam for james holmes. holmes is charged with the mass shooting that happened inside a movie theater in aurora, colorado in 2012. twelve people were killed, and 70 others were wounded. holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. he underwent a sanity evaluation last summer, but the findings were not released. the judge is putting off a second evaluation until defense objections are resolved. the new jersey teen who made headlines for suing her parents has dropped the lawsuit. rachel canning... an 18-year- old high school senior... sued her parents for financial support and college tuition after leaving home last year. she returned home last week. an unusual sculpture is making waves on tribal land near san diego. the work of art depicts a hand with the middle finger raised. f-c-c regulations forbid us from showing you the whole thing. june setori says the one- finger salute stands for fight... her fight against tribal leaders who she says let livestock roam her land and misuse tribal funds. the sculpture has been up for

u-s stocks finished higher tuesday, as investors look ahead to the federal reserve's policy meeting today. the dow gained 89 points. the nasdaq rose 53. and the s-and-p added 13. toyota will pay about a billion dollars to settle claims about faulty accelerators in millions of its cars and trucks. there were numerous reports of sudden unexpected acceleration in 2009 and 2010 model vehicles. toyota launched a massive recall campaign and fixed the pedal problem. the billion-dollar settlement is expected to be announced as early as today... and it could keep toyota out of *criminal court.

into a room that i had met both the sun and the photographer as well as the pilot. a site that can help but think about the family and those who lost their lives and what they're going through. >> the mayor says the crash is a reminder of the risks that they take on the job. a third victim remains in intensive care. the 30 year-old is in critical condition with second and third degree burns. witnesses saw him engulfed in flames running from his car after the news chopper crashed on top. >> a 16 year old girl is in stable condition.. after she was shot in the chest in the pilsen neighborhood. it happened yesterday afternoon in the 18-hundred block of south wood street. police say the girl was caught in gang crossfire following an argument. she was not the intended victim. the girl was taken to the hospital in critical condition. so far, no arrest have been made.

the latest testimony at the oscar pistorius murder trial covers physical evidence at the scene. a blood spatter expert is on the stand this morning talking about the blood left behind, after the shooting. earlier a ballistics expert testified that reeva steenkamp was sitting on a magazine rack, in a defensive position, when she was shot multiple times. the expert says the path of the bullets show that pistorius was *not on his prosthetic legs. pistorius says he felt vulnerable without his legs, so he fired his gun through a closed bathroom door. he says he thought his girlfriend was a burglar. federal agents say they have broken an international child pornography ring. 14 people were arrested, including michael gaw of fremont, california. investigators have already counted more than 250 young victims in 29 states and five countries. some of them were less than

three years old. the ring reportedly encouraged people to share child porn videos on a web network called tor . more than 300 other active child porn cases remain unresolved. the washington post is reporting, the national security agency recorded every single phone call in one foreign country. the post won't *identify the country, at the request of federal authorities. but it says, agents listened to many of those recorded conversations, a month later. americans who made or received calls from the targeted country, are on those recordings. the a-c-l-u says it's chilling to know that the n-s-a now has the ability to record any phone conversation. women age 60 and older have a one in six chance of getting alzheimer's disease in their lifetime. and they're twice as likely to develop alzheimer's than breast cancer. that's according to a report from the alzheimer's association. the disease affects more than five million americans, two- thirds of them women. some parents at an evanston over how rules are being enforced for leggings. girls at haven middle school were told to put on gym shorts by teachers who deemed some skin hugging leggings to be too revealing. the principal points out the dress code does not ban

perform. all four headliners have played lollapalooza before. additional headliners and the complete lineup are expected to come out next week. lollapalooza tickets go on sale next tuesday. the festival runs august first through the third. miley cyrus' tour bus caught fire on the way to new orleans, yesterday. her sister posted this video on instagram showing the flames with the caption "tour bus down." she later tweeted that there were no injuries, but gave no details on how the fire began. kate winslet named her third child, a boy born in december -- *bear blaze. >> that his name? >> winslet told ellen that she had a friend nicknamed bear who was a "big bear hug" and a "great figure" in her life. as for the middle name -- winslet says she and husband, ned rock-'n-roll ...wanted a name signifying their bond. they chose "blaze" because the two met in a house fire in 20- 11. is this a real script?
