he was arrested and taken to the hospital. police are investigating and searching for a weapon. chicago police are alerting people in the woodlawn and west woodlawn neighborhoods that a man tried to sexually assault two women. it happened in the morning on march 10-th. he approached a woman at a bus stop in the 15-hundred block of east 67-th street and offered to pay her for sex... she refused, and he left. 15 minutes later, he grabbed a woman at another bus stop at 67-th and king, pulled her into a building and exposed himself... but she pulled a knife and again he left. the man was driving an older model white cadillac. murder charges have been filed against a man for punching a father who was protecting his teenaged daughter. joseph firek is charged with murder and hate crimes. police say he got into a verbal fight with michael tingling after firek made some inappropriate gestures to his 15-year-old daughter. it happened wednesday afternoon as tingling and his daughter

were walking from her school in rogers park. tingling is a former boxer who had a pacemaker. police say firek shoved and punched tingling while making racial slurs. tingling walked away but collapsed a short time later and died. his death was ruled a homicide. >> i don't know what he was thinking. you take this man away from his daughter ... i have a daughter. every man this walkdal walks her to school. >>firek is due in bond court later today. this is home video of a fire in cicero. the fire broke out in the 35- hundred block of south 56th court. you can see the heavy flames. we originally heard that people were trapped, but that has not been confirmed. nobody was injured. we'll bring you more information as it becomes available. planes are in the air, and ships are on the way, to continue the search of the southern indian ocean for debris that may be part of a missing malaysian passenger jet. melisa raney is following the

search. >> australian officials say the first search plane arrived friday to the area of the indian ocean or officials are continuing their search for objects that could be related to the missing flight. >> we've been trying everything we've got at that area to try to learn more about what this debris might be. >> given the distance from where the object was spotted, the aircraft only had a few hours to look before returning. >> the most inaccessible spot you can imagine. >> of forties caution a could be something other than the plane wreckage. >> it could be a container that has fallen off the shipyard would just don't know. but we owe it to the families and friends and loved ones of the almost 240 people on that flight to do everything we can to try to resolve what is as yet an

erik? >> it's the first of several closures over the next several weekends as the cta concert starts to improve the blue line. will start here at 10:00 tonight here at the california stop. that's between western and logan square. it will remain closed until monday at 4:00 a.m.. crews will start working on the track to make a smoother and faster ride for people. all part of the your new blue $492 million improvement project. the upgrade will be made over 10 weeks finishing in august. this is part of a larger cta $4 billion project that should eliminate blue line slow zones and also improve the stations along the way. and it will cut the time from o'hare to downtown by 10 minutes for those that use the blue line on the weekend. shuttle buses will give you around the closure. there are

also street closures happen overnight search crews can actually get up underneath the tracks and start working. there will be overnight. but intermittently through the weekend they will have closures. be mindful that if you're going to be around the logan square stop in logan square the california stop. >> taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. police have released this sketch of a man that may be responsible for three attacks in south suburban park forest in the last two days. on tuesday a teenage girl was robbed at knife point, then sexually assaulted. two other women were attacked yesterday morning within an hour of each other. an autopsy confirms that a two- year-old girl from lansing died as the result of child abuse. jahariah patterson was found dead wednesday afternoon at her home on wildwood avenue. the medical examiner's office says her body bore the marks of blunt force injuries. in other words, she was beaten to death. investigators have begun

interviewing members of her family. prosecutors say they have video evidence against a man accused of killing his girlfriend's daughter. james harris is charged with the murder of amierah roberson. her funeral is today. an autopsy found she died from blunt force trauma to the head and her body was lit on fire. prosecutors say video shows harris carrying a bag into a wooded area, where the girls remains were found. the house ethics committee confirms, it has opened an investigation into the conduct of congressman luis gutierrez. the congressman's former chief of staff, doug scofield, got a half million dollars in contracts to train the congressman's staff, and help draft new releases. if scofield did any *political work, it would violate congressional ethics rules. the contract was cancelled last year. bed bugs have been detected at the thompson center. they were discovered in offices used by the illinois department of financial and professional regulation over the weekend. a spokeswoman for the agency said the contaminated area has

been treated, and they are sterilizing paper files. the infected area is located in a part of the building that is restricted to state employees. the bugs were traced to a worker who brought them from home. the landmark blue and yellow water tower in andersonville is now gone - after workers spent most of the day yesterday removing it from the top of the swedish american museum on the far north side. the water tower was damaged during the winter when a heating element went out and the water inside froze. an inspector said the damaged tower was a safety hazard and it had to be removed immediately. crews will inspect it and see if it can be repaired and returned to the place where it sat since 1927. a mother in bolingbrook has landed in the guinness book of world records. amelia boomker has been named the world record-holder for the most breast milk donated. while that a lot. she broke the

nine people were killed when a hotel in afghanistan was attacked. afghan police say four teenagers stormed the serena hotel in kabul and started shooting. nine civilians, including children, were killed. six people were wounded. afghan security forces killed the four attackers. they say the gunmen were all under 18. the founding pastor of the controversial westboro baptist church church has died. fred phelps was 84. his church, in topeka, kansas, is known for holding anti-gay protests at military funerals and other events. the first such protest, in 19- 98, took place at the funeral of matthew shepard, a man from wyoming who was tortured and killed because of his homosexuality. phelps' son said his father was kicked out of the church last year. a man in north carolina is arrested for allegedly sucking

the toes of a complete stranger in a wal-mart. >> what you have to say? >> kino i want to hear his answer that thepolice say on monday michael brown entered a wal-mart in lincolnton and approached a woman who was trying on shoes. she thought he worked there and then he told her he was a podiatry student. as brown was helping her, he took a picture of her foot and then lifted it and sucked her toes. >> he grabbed my foot and put it in his mouth. i said what's wrong with you? he said i am sorry. forgive me. please don't tell anybody. the woman did go tell her husband and they called police. brown is charged with misdemeanor assault. this isn't brown's first toe- sucking arrest. in 2001, he was convicted for breaking into a house and sucking a woman's toes. brown is also registered sex offender. a teenager from new jersey is

charged with trespassing after climbing to the top of the world trade center. 16-year-old justin cassquejo squeezed through a security fence then walked past a sleeping security around 4 a-m sunday night. once he got on top of the spire, he took pictures and posted them online. cassquejo was spotted by a construction worker while leaving the site and was arrested. he's being treated as an adult, and faces up to a year in jail if convicted. police officers in honolulu won't publicly admit that they have sex with prostitutes. but there's a state law that says they're *allowed to. and today, they'll urge state senators to *preserve that law. they argue that having sex with a hooker may convince her to share important information in a criminal investigation. and the police say there are departmental policies that prevent officers from *exploiting prostitutes. critics say the policy invites abuse. this is the second time i have to toss over to you like this. >> a serial toad soccer and a kid who climbs up the top of a building and then cops and

morning. u-s stocks rebounded thursday. investors jumped back in after digesting news the central bank could begin hiking interest rates just six months after its bond buying program ends. the dow gained 109 points. the nasdaq and s-and-p also finished up for the day. starbucks is going to start serving a alcohol at some locations. they will sell bottled wine and beer at some stores in a program called starbucks evening. the menu also awards small plates and desserts. it's an early happy hour deal so the call will only be sold after 4:00 p.m.. city can't ask for a venti wine? >> may be a venti shot of vodka. but all boycott the tournament. it was a bad matchup. >>

daughters, sasha and malia, and her mother. china's first lady also accompanied the obamas today. michelle obama plans to meet with more students to discuss education. she says her visit is not political and she will not give any media interviews while she is in china. some c-t-a train stations will be shut down tonight as an overhaul of the blue line gets underway. erik runge is live on the northwest side with more. >> it's the first of several shut downs along the blue line that we will see over the next several weeks. crews will shut down the california stops here at 10:00 tonight and that is between western and logan square. it will remain closed until monday at 4:00 a.m.. crews will start working on the tracks to make a smoother and faster ride for passengers. this is all part of the your new blue, $492 million improvement project. the upgrades will be made over 10 weekends fishing in august and this is part of a larger project which is going to cost about $4

billion. that should eliminate blueline slow zones and cut the time from o'hare to downtown by 10 minutes. for those who use the blue line on the weekend, shuttle buses will get you around. cta crews will be shutting down from the roadways are around the california stop so they can get up under the track to make the improvements that are needed. most of the road closures will be overnight. they do say they will be intermittently shutting down some lanes of the king get crews in and out. but the california stop will be cut down at 10:00 tonight until 4:00 a.m. on monday. live from logan square. back to you. >>murder charges have been filed against a man for punching a father who was protecting his teenaged daughter. police say joseph firek made some inappropriate gestures to a 15-year-old girl near her rogers park school. the girl's father, michael tingling, tried to protect his daughter.

object to hit and shatter the meters... causing them to not work properly... or simply shut down. the damage occurred in seven neighborhoods over the past week. drew peterson may lose his police pension, over the murder of his wife kathleen savio. the bolingbrook pension board voted yesterday to hold a hearing this summer, to consider revoking peterson's 79-thousand dollar a year pension. it'll need to prove that his duties as a police officer had something to do with savio's death. a few days into the governor's race, ill. already flooded with campaign ads. >> do you want someone representing you in springfield? >> they put out an ad for spanish-speaking voters, the governor point out about how rich his opponent is. the democratic strategy is

plenty to class warfare. pointing toward "class warfare" in order to make rauner appear out of touch with average families. but the rauner side is focusing on the problems within state government. >> i am a strong democrat but i'm taking a leave of absence from my party because illinois is in desperate shape. >> one of the best ways to help the economy is to pay our hard- working workers a decent wage by raising the minimum wage to a least $10 per hour. >>house speaker michael madigan now wants to hit the rich with a new tax hike. he's proposing to tax incomes, over a million dollars, by three percent. the rauner campaign calls that the first step toward tax hikes on the middle class and small businesses. catholic schools in chicago say they're being discriminated against by the c-p-s. last month c-p-s announced it was changing the test that would be required for students to get into a selective high school. students at catholic schools will also have to take the new test. the superintendent of the city's catholic schools wrote a letter to c-p-s and mayor emanuel. the letter said catholic

students are at a disadvantage because of the short notice, the unfamiliar test, and having to take the test at a c-p-s site on a saturday. the school district says its looking at options to level the playing field. protesters greeted henry kissinger as he visited the chicago to help the holocaust museum honors survivors. he was the keynote speaker last night at the help museum awards dinner. the museum honored three men who demonstrated a fight against hatred and injustice including john kennedy jr. from madison. tom reckitt from the cubs and the founding executive director of the museum. the cherry blossom have started to sprout in washington. back in 1912 predestine were planted and every year the celebration honors that. also the friendship

police in seattle have released two new photos from the scene where kurt cobain died, almost 20 years ago. the frontman for "nirvana" shot himself to death while high on drugs. there was speculation that police had reopened their investigation into his death. but it turned out, it was just an officer who wanted to refresh his memory of cobain's suicide, in anticipation of media interest over next month's anniversary. an arrest warrant has been issued for anita baker after she didn't to show up at a court hearing in detroit. she's being sued by a

contractor for 15 thousand dollars worth of work done her home. baker was surprised about the warrant, she tweeted yesterday -- "devil is busy." one man's trash is now another man's treasure.. after a scrap dealer discovers this egg he bought at a flea market is really a rare faberge egg worth an estimated 33-million dollars.the unidentified dealer says he bought the egg for 14- thousand dollars several years ago - thinking he could melt it down and make a profit. but he did a little research and discovered it was originally an easter gift from russian tsar alexander the third to his wife in 1887. a collector bought it for an undisclosed amount and will put it on display for the first time in 112 years. the judges were shocked at the talent this nun showed off on italy's version of "the voice." all four judges turned their

music that's a little preview of "mo-town the musical." the mo-town sound and brand was launched by one of the most legendary figures in american popular music, berry gordy. he started "mo-town records" in detroit in 19-59 -- with groups like smokey robinson and the miracles... the temptations and the supremes. dean spoke to gordy about the new show.

we always say the truth is a hit if you make it entertaining. otherwise it's just a documentary. we wanted to really get the story out. >> "motown the musical" begins its run next month at the oriental theater. the muppets are back in "muppets most wanted." a notorious criminal who looks just like kermit the frog... is trying to steal the royal jewels. meanwhile, his evil sidekick, played by ricky gervais, tries to pin the heist on the muppets. dean says it's hilarious, and it left him smiling. "a" he gives it a dean's list "a".
