scene as the police officer scooped up the five year-old out of the arms of the adult and rushed him to an unmarked squad car and drove him to the hospital. he was later transferred here. as to what happened, police say around 8:00 p.m. a fifth year when year-old woman was carrying a five year- old boy in her arms while walking on east 78. shots rang out hitting the five year-old in the stomach. paramedics say the bullet traveled through his stomach and went through his lower back. the woman carrying him was hit in the left side she was rushed to northwestern in critical condition. it was not until later the police realized the five year-old was shot which is when the officer rushed into the hospital. police tell the tribune the don't believe the woman and the boy were the intended target. they also say street gangs have been feuding in the area lee lee. not clear if that's what led up to the shooting. it witnesses told us

shot 50-year-old brion payne in the back of the head, after an argument near a dunkin donuts at wilson and broadway. i didn't know how he thought was an april fool's joke. his dad and we want to find who did this. >>payne is expected to survive. surveillance video recorded the suspect and the late-model white crown victoria he drove. the car has since been found on west armitage. a 15-year-old boy is charged with bringing a loaded gun to an elementary school on the south side. the principal of mollison elementary called police monday afternoon, to report that two students were taking pictures with a gun in the bathroom. when officers searched the students, leon bell junior had a gun in his backpack. the gun was loaded with three *live rounds. he was charged as an adult, and court documents say he was ordered to be held on 50- thousand dollars bond. c-p-s says it took the appropriate safety steps, and bell will be appropriately disciplined. a massive earthquake in chile triggered a tsunami. at least five people were

killed when the magnitude 8- point-2 quake struck last night ... some were crushed by collapsing walls, others suffered heart attacks during the shaking. the government evacuated chile's northern coast and the president declared the area a disaster zone. 3-hundred prisoners managed to escape in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake. a tsunami later rolled in, pounding the shore with 6-foot waves. tsunami watches and warnings neighboring countries have since been dropped. the search for a missing malaysian passenger jet is now into its 26-th day. and authorities are now declaring that the disappearance was a criminal act. more than 170 people have given statements to investigators. computer experts have yet to release their findings from searching the homemade flight simulator belonging to the plane's pilot. ten planes and nine ships continue to search the indian ocean for the plane this morning, a bit east of where they were yesterday. australia has assigned an air traffic controller, to ensure that the planes don't crash into one another. as of now, there is no sign of

the missing plane. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a man charged with sexually assaulting a u-i-c student in a shower is due in bond court today. police say tavares humphries attacked the student monday in the "commons south" dorm. he's facing numerous charges, including attempted murder, criminal sexual assault and residential burglary. this man is charged with first- degree murder charges in connection with a fatal crash on the edens expressway. authorities say jose colon rear-ended another driver on i- 94 near touhy early sunday morning. the impact of the crash caused both vehicles to lose control. police say colon took off after both cars ended up in a ditch. the other driver was pronounced dead on the scene. colon is scheduled to appear in court later this morning. hundreds of people are being denied concealed carry licenses. the state police is denying licenses to 327 applicants because they received inadequate training from an instructor in bolingbrook. officials say the class didn't meet regulations because it had some online instruction instead

of 16 hours of in-person training. a southeast side salvage yard will be thoroughly investigated, after 40 stolen vehicles were discovered there. "adelman's truck and equipment," on east 106-th street, typically strips cars once they arrive... and re-sells the parts. no charges have been filed yet. two years ago, adelman's received a 162-thousand dollar tax break from the city, to build a new warehouse on the property. opening day at wrigley field is friday, but there's some outrage over the cubs' plan for a new parking lot. the cubs announced they'll have a new free parking lot available during night and weekend games. the lot is at 39-hundred north rockwell, which is two miles west of wrigley field. last night the cubs met with people who live around there. speakers tried to assure them that everything will work out, but the residents were not pleased. >> we don't think it's good because as big a commotion as you think. >> you should be telling us what the plan is. we should not have to play 20 questions to get the

recovered and identified after the deadly landslide in washington state. 28-people have now been confirmed dead since the landslide on march 22-nd. the number of people missing has dropped to 20. rescue crews continue to dig around the square mile disaster zone, which is also polluted with human waste and toxic chemicals. the landslide caused an estimated 32-million dollars worth of damage. washington's governor says he's asking the president for additional federal assistance to repair the infrastructure. crews in texas are working to clean up off the gulf coast of texas, after an oil spill last month. more than 168-thousand gallons of oil spilled into the water after a tanker collided with a barge on march 22nd in the houston ship channel. as many as 21 dolphins, four sea turtles and 168 birds have reportedly died as a result of the oil spill. crews have collected over 600 bags of oil-covered debris. a man got a chainsaw stuck in his neck, and lived to talk about it. james valentine trims trees

tiger woods has always managed to make it to the masters where he has won four of his for teenagers. but he won't make it this year. down and out after back surgery on monday. the operation was to resolve a nerve issue that has been bothering him for a few months. it's been worse lately. he dropped out of the honda classic, not a structural issue so he should be back out there later in the summer. but who knows about the u.s. open or the british open. he has been stuck on 14 major since 2008. still for behind the record held by jack nicklaus. wisconsin center goes wild in the badgers over arizona in the regional finals saturday. 11 rebounds. he is the outstanding player. he is good in high- school as well. he played in lisle along with the northwestern card. a great story that the high-school coach and father are following closely. >> he has played basketball but he is a better person than a

night... and the car he's believed to have driven, was found on west armitage. at least five people have died in a massive earthquake off the northern coast of chili. that earthquake later triggered a tsunami, and tsunami warnings for other countries. andrew spencer reports. >> 8.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of northern chile just before 9:00 p.m. local time. residents fled the coast when they learned the earthquake is triggered a tsunami. officials announced the zero warnings for neighboring countries. those watches and warnings were later dropped. the president of chile this declared disaster areas in three northern provinces. >> i would like to make a call to the people who live in the areas. follow the instructions of the local authorities and do everything necessary to insure the security for themselves and their families. >> several people were reported dead as the earthquake triggered small landslides and cut off phones and electricity.

officials say members of the air force were on their way for the prison. 300 inmates escaped. officials as far away as hawaii worried about potential impacts there and ask people to stay out of the water. >> if you're not ready for you could get into difficulty. if you are in the water you could get banged out. to want to keep people out of the water close to the coast. >> the search for a missing malaysian passenger jet has shifted a little eastward this morning. an australian air traffic controller is coordinating the ten planes that are searching the indian ocean for signs of the plane. malaysian investigators have now officially declared that the plan vanished as the result of a criminal act. this man is charged with first- degree murder charges in connection with a fatal crash on the edens expressway. authorities say jose colon rear-ended another driver on i- 94 near touhy early sunday morning. the impact of the crash caused both vehicles to lose control.

thousand soldiers near the ukrainian border. a top official in the obama administration confirms, the government has been conducting warrantless searches of american citizens' communications. the national security agency received permission from a special court in 2011... but it was only yesterday that congress was told, there have been actual searches. the n-s-a says the information was gathered as part of its surveillance of suspected foreign terrorist. people in a small town in colorado voted to reject a measure that would allow them to shoot down drones. the mayor of deer trail, says he thought drone hunting might bring in some much needed revenue for the small town ... but he's not upset. 181 residents went to the polls, and 73-percent of them voted against shooting down drones. a governor's task force on chicagoland mass transit appears to confirm that state house speaker michael madigan used his influence to get people hired by metra. and the patronage practice goes back 30 years. the general assembly's ethics commission is investigating

allegations by ousted metra c-e- o alex clifford. he says he lost his job because of his refusal to grant madigan's patronage requests. the report says 26-people were recommended for employment at metra by madigan. the speaker's office claims, the report is full of "factual errors". mayor emanuel has put forth a plan to pay down chicago's public pension debt, by hiking taxes and cutting benefits. 50 thousand active and retired city workers will pay about 300 dollars a year each, in additional pension contributions. and the owner of a typical 250 thousand dollar home will pay another 250 dollars a year in property tax. the mayor say he knows it's not popular... but he says it must be done. >> people contribute every paycheck into a pension that is now on a course where it will run out of money unless we do something to avert that. >> we have reservations about this deal. it's a bad deal for tens of thousands of city employees including almost

10,000 members of the teachers' union. >> the mayor's plan requires the approval of state lawmakers. and it's likely to face lawsuits from some of the city's unions. speeders who have to sign a promise to comply with a ticket. in order to break that there would have their driving privileges suspended. as of now only non residences can keep their licenses if they are pulled over. >>it appears more companies took april fool's day a little more seriously this year. some put a lot of time and effort into their prank. a british morning show reported that a new breed of chicken lays square eggs. there's also an online grocer that was offering fresh salmon that's caught by eagles. some companies took their prank to you-tube. that's where samuel adams showed off its new creation helium beer. it's slightly dry and gives you a funny high pitched voice.

white house meet its enrollment goal for the affordable care act. president obama announced yesterday seven million people signed up for coverage on federal or state exchanges. healthcare-dot-gov received five million visits on deadline day, while two million people reached out to the call center. not everyone who selected a plan has paid for it yet. a man went for a run in the northern california mountains, and got lost. but the story has a happy ending. bob root was found yesterday, after a two-day search near sacramento. he went running with only shorts and a t-shirt, but got separated from his group. he took a wrong trail... and ended up spending two nights alone, in freezing cold, before he was found. bob told his rescuers, the first thing he wanted was a hamburger. i thought he was going to ask for a beer. >> it you said it might be a helium beer... here are a few stories that are trending online this morning

... former cubs manager don baylor broke his leg, while catching the ceremonial first pitch. baylor is now the angels' hitting coach. he was attempting to catch the ball, when he leaned to the right, and his leg buckled under him. baylor had surgery yesterday. he is a bone marrow cancer survivor, which could explain his weaker bones. tiger woods will miss the masters for the first time in almost 20 years. the announcement came yesterday, following a successful surgery for a pinched nerve in his back. woods decided to have the procedure after having problems while preparing for the tournament. this will be the first time tiger will miss the masters since his debut in 19-95. he may also be forced to miss several upcoming tournaments because of rehab. tiger has won the masters four times.

opening up all over. i went to a place in chinatown called strain. >> you don't have to go to a dorm room to find rahman in japan. the noodle soup is everywhere. over the past few years it has become a staple in new york. here in chicago chefs are hoping these become just as popular. >> it's all about how it had to be by itself. >> this restaurant opened a few months ago in chinatown. >> simple but also people walk by and i always remember. >> a pretty simple menu with a handful of noodle dishes to choose from. >> what makes this a brahman little compared to another type? >> it is a a noodle so it's a different texture. a lot more firm compared with spaghetti.
