some students at the university of connecticut got out of hand while celebrating their school's basketball championship. the u-conn huskies beat the kentucky wildcats, 60 to 54 last night. the huskies never trailed, as the wildcats came back several times. but then kentucky's shooting on the floor and the free-throw line went cold. this is what the u-conn campus looked like afterwards. police say some fans uprooted a light post in front of the engineering building and smashed it through a window. chairs and tables were overturned in the student union. 15 people were arrested search teams have further narrowed the area of the indian ocean where they hope to find the wreckage of a missing malaysian jet. the australian ship that detected possible "pings" from the plane's black box, hasn't picked up any *new pings. and the *batteries on the black box could die any time now. as the search area narrows still further, a miniature submarine will be deployed, with sonar to map the ocean floor, and hopefully locate the plane.

police shot and killed a 21 year old man in the gage park neighborhood , after they say he refused to drop a butcher knife. tonya francisco joins us *live from the ninth district police station with more. >> the stepfather of the man killed wants to know why police would use excessive force against his stepson claiming he was shot eight times when he was only holding a knife. family members identified that man as a 21 year-old hector hernandez. they say he was the father of eight to year-old he was holding when police were called to his home around 545 yesterday. he had apparently been arguing with his girlfriend or his wife. not clear what the relationship is right now. but she apparently had an order of protection against him. hernandez was standing on the front steps of the home holding the child in one hand and a black bag in the other that he said had a gun inside. officers say he was threatening to use it to kill

police. at some point hernandez went in the house, handed the child off and threaten to kill himself saying he was not going back to jail. the spokesman for the fraternal order of police says the officer tried to calm him down before firing. >> the third time he grabbed a butcher knife. a large knife put it to his throat and said i'm going after the family. at that point the officers jumped in to save him. the barbs didn't set for some thing and not sure. but the point the officer feared for the safety of the family members in another bedroom or in a room off the kitchen firing hitting the offender and he was the 0 a. >> we are killers with badges. work to know why.

>> the independent police review authority is now investigating. reportedly, hernandez had been on probation in a domestic battery and kidnapping case. he had a valid order of protection against him. one man was killed and two others were injured in a shooting near a c-t-a red line stop in rogers park. police say the men were standing outside the "a-i-m food mart" in the 16-hundred block of west howard, when someone fired shots from across the street. it happened just before eight last night. a 24-year-old man was taken to the hospital and died. another man was shot in the hip and stomach ... a third man was hit in the collarbone. no arrests have been made. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a driver heading the wrong way caused a crash on i-355. this happened last night in the north-bound lanes in homer glen. illinois state police say a silver s-u-v was going the right way, when it turned around and hit a black vehicle head - on. the driver who got hit was taken to the hospital, but his

injuries are not serious. details on an arrest in the murder of a teenager from palatine are expected today. 14 year old amber creek was found dead in wisconsin 17 years ago. she was found after she ran away from a juvenile facility in illinois. police in racine made an arrest, but they're not saying anything else until later this morning. a 13-year-old boy faces charges after police say he vandalized 18 life-size statues in grant park over the weekend. the installation is called "borders" and features 26 statues. police found spray paint cans and permanent markers belonging to the boy after taking him into custody. his name has not been released because he is a minor. mayor emanuel has changed his strategy for fixing chicago's debt-ridden public pension system. until yesterday, the mayor's plan was to let state lawmakers effectively force a citywide property tax hike, and take the political heat for it. but now, the tax hike has been removed from the state bill... and the plan will instead face a vote of the city council.

police in barrington are investigating a middle school after reports of *sexting. officials at barrington middle school-station campus say a small group of teens were sending inappropriate images of other students among themselves. the principal says disciplinary actions could be "severe" because "sexting" affects reputations of other students and disrupts the educational environment. authorities are considering criminal charges. an argument broke out at a city council meeting in north chicago, when the mayor and other officials were accused of lying. the fight was over former officer brandon yost. he was one of six officers involved in the violent arrest- and beating death of darrin hanna, back in 2011. the public was told yost was fired. but hanna's family says they have heard reports the officer actually resigned ... and that he was re-hired temporarily, in a deal that allows him to collect a disability pension. >> get ready to spend money. inaudible

>> they're wrong about giving him a disability. >> they didn't give it to him. >> darrin hanna's family reignited the issue yesterday, because it was his birthday. dozens of violent crimes are being under-reported by the chicago police department. the city's inspector general's office says the department's numbers are low because it doesn't count every victim. state guidelines say police reports should count victims because sometimes there's more than one incident. but a sample of police reports involving assaults in 2012, revealed some victims were left out because they were counted as one incident. the police department is calling for a review and is blaming former superintendent jody weis for not updating how crimes are counted. federal investigators have concluded, excessive speed contributed to last month's crash of a blue line c-t-a train at o'hare airport. an operator was fired for falling asleep as the train pulled into the terminal. but beyond that, investigators

say the bumper post that should have stopped the train didn't leave enough room for a trip switch to activate the train's emergency brakes. the trip switch needed to be moved. the transit workers union adds, the train should be designed to stop automatically before it ever *gets to the bumper post. >> if the ntsb is saying the brakes were activated, my question is why did this happen? >> nine million dollars is the new, higher damage estimate from last month's crash. the blue line's trip switch at o'hare has since been moved several feet farther up the line, to give trains more room to stop. this is surveillance video from a dunkin' donuts on the northwest side, where a van crashed through the front window. it happened yesterday afternoon in the 38-hundred block of north cicero. no one was injured, and the driver stayed on the scene. there is no word if that driver was ticketed. today is "ben and jerry's" annual free cone day! the company is offering free ice cream cones to say "thank you" to its customers. the annual tradition began

of the los angeles police department, hitting an officer seven times. it happened last night at l-a- p-d's west traffic division building in mid-city. officials say a gunman told the officer he had a complaint and then started shooting with a semiautomatic pistol. the officer was wearing a bullet proof vest. he taken to the hospital and is in good condition. the suspect was also shot and is in critical condition. the motive for the shooting is unknown. the u.s. army concludes, a man went on a shooting rampage at fort hood, texas, because the army refused his request for time off. specialist ivan lopez asked for a leave of absence, just hours before the shooting... and he got into an argument with a superior when the request was denied. lopez shot and killed three people before taking his own

life. though lopez had received treatment for mental problems, the new findings appear to reject the theory that the massacre was brought on by post-traumatic stress disorder. there's new information about the driver of a train that derailed in new york city, killing four passengers last december. federal officials say william rockefeller suffered from severe sleep apnea, but it was undiagnosed at the time of the accident. the diagnosis came from a doctor who was asked to examine rockefeller, after he told n-t- s-b investigators he felt like he was in a hypnotic state. the train derailed when rockefeller took a curve going 52-miles over the speed limit. the supreme court won't hear a case where a business claimed religious freedom for refusing to work at a gay wedding. a photographer in new mexico argued that taking pictures at a lesbian wedding violates her religious beliefs and her first amendment rights. but the state fined her under a law that requires businesses to serve customers regardless of race, religion, or sexuality. the new mexico supreme court sided with the state. it refused to decide if some

businesses were exempt because their work can be considered "protected speech." that ruling now stands. it appears, a love triangle led a jealous woman in philadelphia to dump a load of rats at the home of her romantic rival. it happened last wednesday. when the woman learned that her boyfriend was two-timing her, police say, she and eight friends broke into the other woman's home with a baseball bat... released the rats... punched the other woman... and stole her purse. wouldn't the rats have been enough? the victim identified one attacker... so far, no one has been caught. you were there for many years you said dating was a little rough. >> one time and she can keep her little rat. nothing to do with me. 48 degrees right now. wind out of the northwest at 6-10 mi.. breezy it this morning but the wind will be very strong. chance of rain this morning. it lingers into the afternoon and would try out over the evening.

have a certain swag to us. it's like that with any team, i think we already don't like each other. that adds to it. >> should be a great game tonight. that's more exports. >> u-s stocks fell for a third straight day monday, led by a big decline in the nasdaq. the dow plunged 166. the nasdaq fell 47. and the s-and-p dropped 20. congress may go on recess without extending jobless benefits. the senate passed a bill yesterday to restore those benefits for more than two million long-term unemployed workers. that extension would be retroactive to december and last through may. but this bill may not get through the house as is. republican leaders are pushing for changes to the federal workforce training programs. if you want the best value, get a degree from harvey mudd college in california. the private science and engineering school is number one when it comes to the return on your investment.

hernandez. he apparently been arguing with his girlfriend or wife. their relationship is not clear. we do know there was an order of protection against him and he was on probation for kidnapping and domestic battery. police say he was standing on the front steps of a home in the 2500 block of west 50th around 5 4:05 p.m. holding his two year- old child and a black bag that he said had a gun inside. he was threatening to use it to kill police. at some point he went into the house, handed the child to someone and then went to the kitchen where he threatened to kill himself by putting a knife to his throat saying he was not going back to jail. the spokesman police says the officers tried to calm him down and even fired a taser but it didn't take. they say he then went into another room where there were several other people and that's when the officers opened fire killing the man. >> pretty himself. he had a

brakes. the trip switch has now been moved up several feet. the body of a 9-year-old girl believed to have been swept away by severe flooding in mississippi was recovered. floodwater had pulled the girl into a channel under a road monday night. now search teams in louisiana are looking for a three-year-old child who fell into a swollen creek and was swept away on monday. the seartch for the boy will resume today and a woman's body was recovered monday in georgia after her car was swept away in a rain-swollen creek in north carolina and mississippi, tornadoes touched down damaging homes and injuring residents. rain continues to pound southeast, and flash flood warnings and watches are being issued. 33 people have now been killed from the mudslide in washington state. more rain will cause the nearby river to rise again. the number of people missing is now at 12. but that changes as names are added and removed. more than 220 people have registered for federal assistance. three

disaster recovery centers have been opened. they will get one on one face to face counseling and assistance. >> a republican congressman from louisiana is apologizing after a newspaper posted video that appears to show him kissing someone other than his wife, in his office. andrew spencer has more on this story. >> the u.s. representative from louisiana, a married father of five ran on a platform of family values. >> some believe faith and family and hard work for sorely missing. >> he asked for forgiveness after a news outlet posted a video on the website. it shows him kissing a married woman on his staff. he won a seat in the u.s. house through a special election last november after his predecessor resigned. he campaigned as a christian conservative and made headlines at the state of the union by inviting duck dynasty star to attend as his guest. it doesn't explain how it got the video but police say it's taken inside the

office in december. he responded to the video with a statement saying there is no doubt i have fallen short and i am asking for forgiveness. asking for forgiveness from god, my wife, my staff and my constituents. trust is something i know has to be learned whether through a husband, a father or a congressman. i promised to do what i can to earn back the trust of everyone. >>a former top aide to mayor richard m. daley ix expected to plead guilty to embezzling money from a charity. gene lee was daley's deputy chief of staff. later, he ran the chinatown summer fair, and the chicago dragons athletic association. lee reportedly will admit, he spent more than five thousand dollars in charitable donations, to buy suits, travel, and entertain donors. lee could get up to two years in prison. supporters of charter schools are planning a rally in springfield today. it's being organized by the illinois network of charter schools. they say there are about a dozen bills currently under

consideration by lawmakers, aimed at stopping charter growth in illinois. charter school supporters say this is the strongest opposition they have faced in nearly 20 years. one proposal would ban charters from opening in areas where a neighborhood school has closed in the past decade. police in toledo, ohio are blaming a car crash on a sleepwalking ten-year-old. according to investigators, the girl got out of bed, grabbed the keys to the family car, and drove it about three blocks until she crashed it into four other vehicles. the girl's father says she has had bouts with sleepwalking before... but nothing this serious. >> the keys were hanging out. she would have to climb on something to get them. >> the girl was crying when police arrive at the crash site. she wasn't arrested... but she'll have to appear in juvenile court for operating a vehicle without a license, and not wearing a seat belt. >> they have to check her text messages. maybe she was distracted while driving. 40 degrees was the current temperature. wind of the northwest at 10 mi.. we are

escalating in eastern ukraine... and the united states says it's *russia's* fault. as protesters march on government buildings in several eastern cities, secretary of state john kerry told his russian counterpart that russia must not *incite the unrest, or use it to justify seizing control of more of ukraine. russia already controls crimea. russian authorities argue, the demonstrations are spontaneous shows of *support for russia... and it's the united *states that should back off. >> joe biden back on twitter. he sent a message from his personal account yesterday, saying he was "dusting off the twitter handle for a big midterm election year". before that, biden hadn't tweeted since sending a "happy holidays" message in 2012 ... after he and president obama were re-elected into the white house. the account is different than the one biden regularly uses as vice president. biden has said he plans to campaign in more than one-

hundred races this year. here are a few stories that are trending online this morning ... the men's college basketball tournament championship goes to the university of connecticut. the u-conn huskies beat kentucky, 60 to 54, to win the title last night. u-conn led for most of the game, and kentucky missed nearly half of its free-throws. this is the huskies second championship in four years, and its the first time that a "number seven" seed won it all. celebrity friends mourn the a city version of the cal tipping. they are flipping over smart cars. smart cars weigh about 1,600 lbs. and a relatively easy to tip. several men have been caught. it is considered a felony vandalism. >> that is not very nice. at least one star of star wars will return for episode 7. peter mayew played chewbacca. there

looks pretty close to the picture i should say. in that regard i do give it high marks. the waffle hold up nicely as you pick it up. we drove it home wonder if they got soggy and will fall apart. but it stays pretty steady. i wish there was more flavor from the bacon. the waffle is really sweet especially with the syrup. >> here is the sausage version. first thought is i don't know why they decided to go with a straight up sausage patty in there. it doesn't really take up the whole length of the waffle so you have quite a few bites of just egg and cheese and waffle with no sausage. i would rather see a chopped up to reason with some bill peppers and onions. the sausage works better than the bacon because it really stands out. >> of the waffle topcoat is stealing headlines, they have also launched a breakfast version of a crunch rap. >> i love this. it is durable.
