a blast of snow in the middle of april. we'll get a *live update from the city to the suburbs. our cameras caught mayor daley's nephew, richard vanecko, as he's released from jail. and the *blood moon drew eyes upward in chicago and around the country. good morning. i'm sean lewis in for dan. and i'm erin mcelroy. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. demetrius ivory is *live at the adler planetarium with a check of our weather. >> good morning. he knew i was not about to miss this. not going i'm not going to miss that blood moon. we're live the clips is going on. it was full a moment ago but not so much anymore. a raging snowstorm last

night around 3:30 a.m. the skies cleared and we got really excited because it's it. here's a time lapse. it's a lunar eclipse, we will have four in a row this is the first one the next one comes through in october. a really spectacular sight much of the country was able to see it. let's talk about what it's going on back here. we have that's know, over 1 in. that came our way. it was slow to move out of some portions of northwest indiana. for much of chicago, and least for the day the snow is done. another chance of snow coming up in the seven days forecast. right now temperatures are between the mid-20s and lower 30s. the numbers will rise again today. the satellite's radar composite shows we are generally looking

and cloud cover breaking away. that snow is having on to portions of northwest indiana. the heaviest of this is out of here. today's high temperature only up to about 40 degrees. we should be at almost 60 degrees. tomorrow we will warm-up. as we get into friday, another chance for rain and snow. it's not over yet. here is a live shot of the moon. not a total eclipse anymore, but it's still very spectacular. more coming up later. >> can we howl at the moon? >> that was fun. that was so fun. >> a quick update. with a number of items happening in traffic. 2942 right lanes are down as everyone knows snow up there

times this year let's just do one more time. but the snow did cover some roads before the most part the roads are just what. there are some slick spots out there because the plows are out again doing the best they can to keep up with the spring snow showers. a few accidents were out there. nothing like some of the mornings we have seen this winter. we may even break another record for cold this winter with the cold weather on april 15th still did not stop some people from trying to catch a glimpse of the lunar eclipses morning. >> we wanted to come see the moon but obviously we can't see it. it is snowing. >> what you think of the snow in april? >> i didn't move out of st. louis for the snow. >> we were joking it's a christmas wonderland in april. >> if they would have waited a

few more hours, the clouds would have cleared out there would have pitted excellent view of the winter clips. hopefully we won't get any more clouds and snow cover and snow showers because it is quite beautiful if you get the chance to get out and see it. live in the south loop. >>northwest indiana is also getting more snow. it's been falling in highland since early last night. that's causing a few problems on the roads. slick conditions likely led to an accident in munster, but it wasn't anything serious. the search for flight 370 now faces a new hurdle. the robot submarine that is searching the floor of the indian ocean, can't go all the way to the bottom. it's not built to operate at depths below 15 thousand feet. it reached that limit yesterday, and automatically returned to the surface. search officials are exploring their options for using subs that can go deeper.

no wreckage has been found... but scientists will examine an oil slick, discovered near what's believed to be the crash zone. richard vanecko is out of jail. mayor daley's nephew left the mc-henry county jail yesterday, after serving just two months for involuntary manslaughter. vanecko admitted throwing the punch that killed david koschman in 2004 on the near north side. his release was cause for reflection by his victim's mother. >> i thought about it a lot. there times where a when he went into that a valentine's day would never be the same to him. i remember thinking i wonder if he realizes what he took from me when that happened. >> vanecko's next step is two months of home confinement... then two and a half years probation. as for nancy koschman, she's pursuing a lawsuit, claiming that chicago police, city hall, and cook county prosecutors conspired to cover up vanecko's guilt to protect his powerful uncle's political dynasty. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. chicago police are looking for the man who sexually assaulted

a woman in lakeview. police say the 22-year-old woman was walking through an alley, in the 35-hundred block of north halsted, when she was attacked yesterday afternoon. she was taken to the hospital in stable condition. no one is in custody. a man charged in a fatal crash on the far south side has died. glenn jones was facing several charges, including reckless homicide, in connection with the crash thursday night at 123rd and state street. authorities say he was fleeing from police when he hit a car, then a tree. his passenger was ejected and killed. two people in the other car were injured. jones died yesterday afternoon. a 90-year-old man fell to his death, down his apartment building's garbage chute. now, chicago police want to know why. it happened yesterday morning at the belmont place apartments in kilbourn park. by the time officers arrived, victim rocco sette was already dead. an autopsy today may determine whether he fell accidentally, suffered a seizure, or was pushed.

an young male driving an s-u-v crashed into two town houses in far northwest suburban huntley. the nissan murano crashed into the garage of both homes late yesterday afternoon. the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries-- no one else was injured. one house has been deemed unsafe for people to live in until the gas line is fixed. the drivers name has not been released. president obama is observing the anniversary of the boston marathon bombing with a moment of silence at the white house. the moment of silence is planned for 2:49 p-m -- the same time two bombs exploded near the finish line of the marathon last april 15-th. the attack killed three and wounded hundreds. one suspect, tamerlan tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police. his younger brother, dzhokhar was wounded and arrested after a massive manhunt. he's awaiting trial. this year's marathon is next monday. the director of the f-b-i paid his first visit to chicago since taking the job last september. james comey met with staffers in the chicago field office yesterday. he says fighting violent crime

is a high priority for the agency. one hundred f-b-i agents in chicago are currently devoted to violent crime ... many of them work on joint task forces with local police and prosecutors. >> i think the relationship with the chicago police department is excellent. we have a number of violent crime task force's working with the cops. we will explore whether there are other things to do i don't want to just throw resources but if there are need for more officers or resources we want to contribute. >> comey says new congressional funding will allow for 2- thousand new hires nationally over the next year and a half. sue the t-rex is experiencing one of the risks of space travel.. flight delays. nasa canceled yesterday's launch of the space-x falcon nine, because of a helium leak. the launch is rescheduled for friday afternoon. microbes from the dinosaur skeleton at the chicago field museum will be on board when it goes.

two convicted sex offenders will be arraigned for murder today in california. franc cano and stephen gordon were out on parole when police arrested them friday, in connection with the rapes and murders of four women in orange county. what makes their case unusual, is that the attacks happened while the men were wearing the court-ordered g-p-s trackers that sex offenders must wear. the devices couldn't prevent the attacks... but they linked the men to the killings. cano and gordon could face life without parole, or even the death penalty. a federal judge has ruled that ohio must recognize out-of- state same-sex marriages.

several same-sex couples asked the judge in a hearing earlier this month to dismiss the voter-approved ban on recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states. lawyers for those couples argued the ban violated equal protection laws. judge timothy black wrote he intended to declare the ban unconstitutional. same-sex couples are still not allowed to marry in the state. minnesota makes history with largest minimum wage hike. a bill signed into law yesterday will raise the base wage from 6-dollars and 15-cents ... to 9-50 an hour. the move catapults the state from one of the lowest minimum wages to one of the highest, once it is fully phased in by 2016. more than 325-thousand minnesota workers will get raises as result. the increase will happen in three stages, starting in august. the state's base wage will be tied to inflation starting in 2018. federal regulations could interfere with the relationship between a brewery.. and some cows. russian river brewing company

beautiful spring weather with a demetrius spirit of want to ask you, everyone is now gone 4:00 a.m. everyone has left their packing up the telescope's but you said this is your first time seeing something like this? what is your impression? >> i have always been at work or the last time it was 2011. it was pretty cool. 330 the sky cleared the snow when away and people ran outside. >> i live in the northern suburbs are was driving down the could see it right when he got into the city it was totally cloudy. the crowd really rushed out here and they started to cheer it was like a big party. you talk to some astronomers. >> we did. lots of kids. a few hundred people here tonight. we will have more from the people so that those people who slept through it can hear more. >> actual science?

>> you are done and we all know you lost and you will pay for it. a lot of witnesses here on not one. we will deal with the punishment later. let's talk about traffic. the problems on the road from all that snow. 80- 94 ramp to the bishop ford is down. the semi, several cars piled up. a huge mess they're trying to detour people off but either way it's causing really bad travel times through that stretch. this is heading south bound it's the road, all lanes are closed. that's due to a semi truck that flipped over and lost its load of acid. that will be a huge mess to clean up. that has been in place for several hours. 294 at 82 lanes are down. the accidents just keep piling up. we have reports of lots apache case. we could be in for a messy and long commutes. we will keep you updated but those are some the worst spots right now. give

it has stopped snowing which is good news but a lot of snow did fall overnight. it was mixed in with the ice pellets. that's why the roads have been so slick. we have had a lot of practice with our winter driving skills and we have to do it all over again. the snow did cover some roads but for the most part, the roads were just wet and least in the city. but there are a lot of slick spots out there talking about the actions that are happening because of the slick spots. ploughs are out again doing the best they can to keep up with the snow. a number of accidents were out there and they continue through the morning. but nothing like we have seen some mornings. we may even break a record for cold weather for tax day. still did not stop people from time to

today's questioning focused on the night that he shot and killed his girlfriend. yesterday he said he should be blamed for her death but today he said he should not be because he was scared and thought there was an intruder in his home. he then argued with the prosecutor over whether the crime scene was altered because the magazine rack in the bathroom was out of place. >> president obama and vladimir putin spoke for the first time in two weeks what about the escalating violence in ukraine. during a phone call the president expressed grave concern about the russian government support for the actions. if he says they threaten to undermine and destabilize the ukraine government. president putin denied involvement in the uprising. both sides suggested talks between russia and ukraine and triple still happen on thursday as planned. >>federal prosecutors plan to

pursue hate crime charges against the man suspected of killing three people outside jewish centers near kansas city. glenn miller, is believed to for have links to various hate groups ... including the ku klux klan. he's accused of gunning down a man and his 14-year-old grandson center on sunday. then, a woman in a nearby parking lot of a jewish assisted living facility. the hate crime designation means that cross could face both federal and state charges. investigators say all three shooting victims were christians. >> here's try to hurt somebody based on their race or religion , a whole number of categories under a heat crime. >> going on about different races. many jews that he claims they are all bad. >> investigators say all three shooting victims were christians. >>three workers at a trash transfer station in tennessee are being called heroes, after saving a puppy that was buried alive in a landfill. one of the workers was moving trash at a landfill in dickson

when he heard something crying. troy's coworkers helped him get the pup to safety gave him water. then took the pitt bull mix to a nearby animal shelter. now he's in a foster home, where he is doing much better. officials say if this was done intentionally, the person responsible could face serious animal cruelty charges. >> that all will have a new home very soon. chicago alderman robert fioretti is going on the attack against mayor emanuel. and his criticism is raising speculation that he'll run for mayor. speaking at a city club luncheon, fioretti was sharply critical of last year's school closings, the city's persistent unemployment problem, and its continuing crime problem. he said emanuel is cutting deals at the expense of ordinary citizens. but he stopped short of declaring his candidacy. no comment from emanuel. the christian school is moving because of low enrollment. last month voted to leave lansing and

marathon bombings was on hand for a very special flag- raising. john odom was technically dead when he arrived at boston medical center last year. both of his legs were torn apart off by one of the bombs. but doctors were able to save the legs... and now odom can walk again. he joined family members and hospital staff, in raising a "boston strong" flag. and he plans to be at the finish line of *this year's

marathon. we've been telling you all morning about the driving conditions with the snow. at this point all lanes are shut down in bound dan ryan at 51st. in nine car pileup. they're diverting ever the off there. on top of that, another action further in bound this is the sixth major accident we've seen in the last hour. we're still dealing with the road completely shut down heading south bound with a jackknifed semite. on top of that with multiple crashes on 294 and still cleaning up north and 80-94. the ramp to the bishop ford getting salted after their foot truck there as well. really treacherous driving. we will keep you updated more coming up in a bit. >> a few stories trending this morning. olympic champion

michael phelps can't stay away from the pool. he's coming out of retirement to compete for the first time since the 20-12 olympics. the event is the arena grand prix in mesa, arizona later this month. fellow gold medalists ryan lochte and katie ledecky will also be there. u.s. airways is apologizing after accidentally tweet did a link to a pornographic images. it depicted a naked woman in a central position with a toy plane. you can use your imagination from there. the airline was replying to a customer who was complaining about service. u.s. airways say the tweet was a mistake that the deeply regret. >> we have our twins out there in the matching jackets. now it's marcuses turn. >> that's right. we are out here for the big lunar eclipse party.
