coming through. at a good change my oil. >> a quick update on was down 90 where we have a tolling) elmhurst. they started that about an hour ago. the should be there until about 530. same deal in bound like. from the man into the circle getting squeezed down by a single lane with overnight construction. the rest is looking good. we will give you another update in a few minutes. >>rescuers are looking for passengers of a sinking ship off the coast of south korea. two people are confirmed dead, but many are missing. andrew spencer has more. >> the rescue dragged into the afternoon when state as the massive ship sink into the waters of the east tennessee. most of the passengers, 300 more were high school students travelling with teachers to the resort island southwest of south korea's coast. the ferry sent a

distress signal at about 9:00 a.m.. the coast guard rushed to help before hundred 74 people were on board. not everyone made it out alive. one passenger said that he heard a loud thump just before the ship started to sink. some passengers jumped into water trying to get to safety hoping to swim to the rescue vessel. one of them suffered a fractured leg. the coast guard rescued them with blankets. water temperature was lower than 50 degrees. hyperthermia was a concern. >>on the anniversary of the boston marathon bombing, police arrested a man who, they say, carried a phony bomb onto the marathon route in his backpack. written to video local media outlets identify him as 25-year- old kayvon edson, a self- described performance artist. he was stopped as he walked in the middle of the street, barefoot, in pouring rain. inside the backpack was a rice cooker, similar to the pressure cookers used in the bombings. but the rice cooker was filled with confetti.

still, police blew up the backpack, and a second bag full of photography equipment. edson is charged with disorderly conduct, and possession of a hoax bomb. the anniversary of the boston bombings was marked with church bells, a flag raising, and a reverent moment of silence for the victims. first responders who helped those victims, returned to the marathon finish line, to pay their respects to the three people who died, and to the many others who were left permanently disfigured. boston police say they have a strong security plan for next monday's marathon. 36 thousand runners plan to take part... 9 thousand more than last year. a man was shot and robbed at his home, after a winning night at a casino. randi belisomo is live at palos heights police headquarters with the latest. randi? >> good morning. the shooting is the first in the area in about quarter-century. the victim had just returned home from a casino

with several thousand dollars in winnings. police are looking to two men in the 20's or 30's who entered a home in the 7900 block through the back door. struck the man with a blunt object and demanded his money from the riverboat casino. when he refused to give it up he was shot in the abdomen. he ran for help to a neighbor's house. her medics took him to crest medical center in oakland where he had surgery. he is listed in stable condition. police hope surveillance video from the casino will help identify the attackers. >> the door was forced open he heard that he was confronted by two male subjects who hit him in the head. they demanded the money that he had won. he tried to resist and at that point they shot him. >> the casino is cooperating

with the investigation. police believe there is no immediate threat to the community. >>a group of people on the south side worked with police to save their neighbors from a burning home. a man who lived in the house in the west pullman neighborhood, didn't realize it was on fire until his neighbors started yelling at him. a pair of officers who were in the area yesterday evening called for help on their radios. then, they noticed two children were trapped upstairs. the officers and neighbors instructed the kids to break the windows, then told them to jump into their arms. >> the little boy was hanging. the told him to jump and everybody came at the same time so we could use our arms together and caught him. we caught the kid. >> i've got nothing left. but and glad to be here. >> a man was also rescued from the second floor. eight people were injured, including two firefighters and a police officer. they are all expected to be o-

k. the cause of the fire is under investigation. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a crash on i-65 killed a doctor and his two children in northwest indiana. their s-u-v slammed into a semi monday night, during a traffic jam on i-65 near roselawn. the truck was stopped because a tanker had rolled over in front of it, spilling hazardous chemicals. the driver of the s-u-v is identified as doctor mallik chaganti . his 10 year old son and 14 year old daughter also died. a third child was injured. chicago police are questioning at least two people about a drive-by shooting that killed a teenager in rogers park. 16 year-old keno glass was shot at ashland and jonquil terrace early yesterday morning. police say the gunfire came from a gray, mini-van. they chased the vehicle, and eventually stopped it at sheridan and touhy. the f-b-i says a man suspected in six bank robberies in chicago over the past month was

arrested on the near north side, shortly after hitting his last bank in the loop. the arrest was captured on cell phone video. the man, believed to be the "benchwarmer bandit", was caught near chicago and wabash ... just after a fifth third bank on dearborn was robbed yesterday afternoon. a priest is returning to his church in lakeview after he was investigated for sexual abuse. someone accused the reverend michael o'connell of sexual misconduct in the late 19-90's. but the cook county sheriff's department investigated and announced it couldn't support any charges. a review board then recommended that o'connell be reinstated. patronage hiring at metra goes back three decades, according to the transit agency's own records. a special task force released more than 700 index cards with the names of people recommended for metra jobs... along with the politicians who recommended them. the politicians included governors george ryan and jim

edgar, mayor jane byrne, alderman ed vrdolyak and senator paul simon. the patronage culture came to light when metra c-e-o alex clifford said he was fired after refusing a patronage request by state house speaker mike madigan. federal prosecutors say state representative derrick smith admitted to accepting a 7- thousand dollar bribe. according to newly filed court documents, smith told f-b-i agents after his 2012 arrest that he took the money to pay campaign workers. prosecutors say smith thought it was from a day care operator who needed a state grant. smith's lawyers are trying to block the admissions from his corruption trial, which starts next month. smith lost in the primary election last month. it took 10 months, but the shedd aquarium has finally named its newest penguin! the chick is named "ruggles"-- in honor of ruggles bay in the falkland islands. that's one of the places where the rockhopper penguins can be found. it took so long to name her,

a man convicted of plotting to torture and murder a suburban landlord, is now writing letters from his jail cell... trying to dangerous man. steven mandell could face life in prison, for a foiled plot to force a strip club owner to sign over the club, then kill that owner. but in a letter to a federal judge, mandell insisted he could never hurt anyone. an assistant prosecutor says, if mandell continues to send letters to judges and police, he may face additional charges. the murder trial of oscar pistorius will soon go on break for two weeks. the judge ruled proceedings will adjourn after tomorrow and not resume until may 5-th. that's because the prosecutor is involved in another case that takes precedence over the pistorius trial. the judge says this trial, which started on march third, is already longer than expected. today a bullet trace expert is testifying for the defense. he's challenging testimony that explained some of the bruises

services group and a stop at the picturesque echo point lookout. the zoo will even name an animal after prince george. >>a missing boy in nebraska has been reunited with his mother after he was found in a very unusual place. a mother called police yesterday evening after she realized her 3 year old boy was not in her apartment. across the street, people at a nearby bowling alley made the startling discovery. the little boy was sitting with stuffed animals inside of a claw machine. employees called the vendor-- who let the boy out. soon after, the mother was reunited with her son. he is doing fine. >> what a sight. >> that's a slippery slope. is missing then he set a bowling alley and now they find him. >> and of course some of the videotape that. >> probably the only thing the clock could grab onto. >> it's amazing he even got in there. >> wears his mother? >> she had nothing to do with that. she wasn't trying to help out. 26 degrees right now. we

is warning that ukraine is on the brink of a civil war. the comment came as ukraine's military launched its first formal action against pro- russian separatists, who have taken control of government buildings in as many as ten cities. ukrainian troops reclaimed the country's airport after a clash with gunmen yesterday. ukraine's acting president declared that an "anti-terrorist

operation" is under way, to stop ukraine from being torn into pieces. american intelligence officials are feverishly poring over a new video which shows the largest known gathering of al- qaeda since 9-11. what is especially troubling is that the meeting took place in the open... and that america didn't find out about it, in time to launch a drone strike. >> quite an extraordinary video, the leader who is also the number to of all quaeda worldwide addressing over 100 fighters somewhere in the yemen taking a big risk in doing this. >> the intelligence committee should be survived surprise that they assembled together and somehow they didn't notice. >> the video shows that al-qaeda is once again emboldened... and its senior leaders may once again be plotting attacks against america. "al qaeda in the arabian penensula" is especially dangerous, because it has its own bomb-maker.
