police are looking for the man who sexually assaulted a woman near a suburban metra stop. the u-s is ready to issue a new round of sanctions against russia over the crisis in ukraine. and dozens of northwestern football players will vote today on forming a union. good morning. i'm dan ponce. and i'm erin mcelroy. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. it's the last morning of the week. >> it's at their friday morning or for some people its thursday night. note it is raining right now but it won't rain all day. it will be a nice later. we already got three thumbs down. you've seen this high before.

but we continue to talk about temperatures on the rise. nearly 70 degrees today. right now we have that rain coming true. it will dry out quickly. preconditions and some sunshine. 46 at o'hare. 47 in lansing. 49 and juliet. rain and clouds in the temperatures have not dropped too much. most of the region has been dry. we had lights prickles a moment ago. this line will continue to press to the east. low pressure moves through and it should be out of the way by lunchtime. showers taper off quickly cloud cover will move for a few hours but it will break up quickly by the afternoon. 62 by noon. high temperature to say 68. cooler for the weekend. >> looking good on the road a

bit of construction should be picked up by 530 or 6:00. heading out early, not too much to worry about. no major accidents or hot spots. >> a police officer from gary is in the hospital, after his squad car crashed during a high speed chase. it happened last night, near burr street and the borman expressway. the officer was reportedly involved in the chase, when his squad car struck a guard rail and burst into flames. witnesses say the car was engulfed by flames when ambulances arrived. the officer's condition has not been released. an amtrak train going from champaign to chicago is delayed after a fatal accident involving a farmer. the train hit a fertilizer spreader as it came out of a field, in savoy last night. the driver was flown to a hospital, where he died. no one on the train suffered any serious injuries. the train had to be towed back to the station in champaign. passengers were put on another train, but their trip was delayed by six hours. it was expected to arrive in chicago about a half hour ago.

we have a breaking news story of indonesia. a drunken passenger on a virgin blue flight try to break into the cockpit and hijack a plane. it happened a flight of australia. the pilot was forced to land the plane in bali. passengers were allowed to get off they will be booked on other flights. no one was injured. >> police are searching for a man who sexually assaulted a woman near a metra train station in the south suburbs. nancy loo is live in matteson with more. >> good morning. police say the suspect in this case could be a serial rapist. the attack happened along this trail just before sunrise yesterday morning. not far from the madison metra station. victim was on her way to the station from her home in park forest. 34 year-old woman told police she gave a description of her

attackers believed to be in his 20s or 30s. police say the woman was walking to the station around 5:30 a.m. when she was grabbed and sexually assaulted along the trail between been street. the same man is suspected in two separate attacks on tuesday. the joint community alert has been putting many residents on the edge and ready to fight back. >> i carry a bat for protection. i have a daughter. i'm very concerned about her walking back and forth to school alone. >> police in park forest already investigating four previous attacks since march in which young women reported being dragged and battered. the suspect sketch in those cases is similar to the sketch released yesterday leading to the joint alert. however, police say it is

not known yet whether all of these cases are connected. the three most recent attacks happened in the early morning hours. residents are urged to be alert and take precautions. police are offering a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest in any of the cases. >>the university of chicago is warning students about an attack that happened at a metra stop the victim was in the east stairwell of the 53rd street station yesterday afternoon, when they were approached by a person with a gun who took their cell phone and wallet ... then ran off. the attacker is described as being in his teens. no arrests have been made. the victim was not hurt. u-s officials say additional sanctions against russia could come today over the crisis in ukraine. secretary of state john kerry says russia will make an "expensive mistake" if it does not de-escalate the situation. tensions rose yesterday when russia began new military drills near the border, after

ukrainian forces killed five pro-russian militants. ukraine is giving russia 48- hours to explain the drills, but did not say what ukraine will do if russia doesn't comply. a doctor from chicago was one of three americans killed by terrorists in afghanistan. 57-year-old jerry umanos died yesterday when a guard opened fire on a hospital in kabul, operated by a faith-based organization. the wife of umanos says her husband was living his dream of helping the afghan people by treating children and training other doctors. previously, umanos worked for 25 years at the lawndale christian health center. >> he always had a desire to be the hands and of crisis. he was always a delight for christ and he had a love and commitment that he expressed for the afghan people because of the glove. >> doctor umanos' family is asking people to honor his memory by looking beyond the violence in afghanistan, and opening their hearts to the afghan people.

today is sentencing day for three men who plotted a series of bombings at chicago's nato summit, two years ago. jared chase, brent betterly and brian church were arrested after they assembled four molotov cocktails in the days leading up to the summit. the bombs may have been meant for police stations, mayor emanuel's house, and president obama's campaign headquarters. they were the first men convicted under illinois' terrorism statute. prosecutors are asking for a minimum 14-year prison sentence for each man. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. chicago police are holding this man, johanson little, on charges of knowingly infecting his girlfriend with h-i-v. police say little has been h-i- v positive since 2003. the couple's year-long relationship ended in june of last year. in february, the woman tested positive for h-i-v. little is being held on 750 thousand dollars bond. one person is dead, and nine others were hurt in shootings across chicago since yesterday afternoon. a 23-year-old man was pronounced dead after being shot in the gresham neighborhood at 6:30 last night.

it happened in the nine- hundred block of west 83rd street. police say the man was outside, when a van drove up opened fire. so far, no suspects are in custody. four people, including two firefighters, were hurt when a cleaners in grayslake. it happened yesterday afternoon at "a-one cleaners" on belvidere road. two employees were overcome by fumes from dry cleaning chemicals, one of them suffered burns. two firefighters were treated for inhalation injuries. all of the injured are expected to be o-k. it may be election day for northwestern football but it will have it declared winner for a while. 76 players are eligible to vote whether they want to form a union. the regional director of the labor board had ruled they are actually school employees but the board is reviewing that decision. the election will still be held but the result will be known for several months. forming a union supporters say will give them a voice but northwestern says players are students in a voluntary football program. >>

a former soccer coach at maine west high school will not be getting his job back after a hazing scandal. in january of last year, school officials fired soccer coaches emilio rodriguez and michael divincenzo they were accused of not keeping freshmen players safe from being hazed by other players. a state appointed hearing officer upheld rodriguez's firing. the officer said rodriguez knew, or should have known, that his players were being physically violated. a judge cleared divincenzo of any criminal wrongdoing, but he's not trying to get his job back. a new high school will be named after the president. it will be built and scandal to open in 2017. students will be selected to the enrollment process thousands of well qualified can apply but only a few hundred will get in. the new school gives kids another option at a high performing school. >> where am i going to send my child? it's the biggest anxious question that exists across the city. as noted, 2400 kids every

year get turned away who are prepared for our high schools. we are not prepared for them. we will be prepared for them. >> the school will cost $60 million to build. the money will come from tax increment financing. >>the university of south florida is making a rule about selfies at graduation. the school says it's not opposed to students taking photos of themselves. students just aren't allowed to take selfies on the stage during the commencement. university officials say it slows down the ceremony. an ad in the student newspaper entitled, "graduation etiquette," also classifies stepping, marching, and strolling as inappropriate behavior. had to get across the stage? >> what will they do expel you? you're graduating. there will send you a bill and ask you to pay money for the rest of your life. that's what they will do. rain showers continue today. we

and a bus driver were injured when their bus veered off a road in southern california, and went *up a hillside. the children were heading home from school yesterday afternoon when the bus crashed in anaheim hills. the bus was found 20 feet from the road, and leaning against a

tree. the driver had to be cut out of the wreckage. he and two children are listed in critical condition. investigators say the driver may have been making an unsafe turn. a pellet gun shooting left a naval base in san diego on lockdown for more than two hours. a sailor was spotted waving the gun from a sixth floor window in his barracks at naval base point loma. witnesses say, from the ground, it looked like a *real gun. the gunman later told police, he fired the gun at a mirror in a parking garage... but not at any people. 7 thousand people live or work at the based... no one was injured in yesterday's incident. yesterday was take your children to work day which gave the first lady a chance to meet with children of employees in the executive office. one little girl was there to help her father. >> my dad's been out of a job for a few years and wanted to give you his resonate. >> i will take it. >> she's doing something for her dad.

an ongoing drought in brazil. coffee growers say their crops of arabica beans are being severely hurt by the dry spell. those beans are used in *most of the world's coffee. some of the big *chain coffeeshops have been able to hold the line on their prices, because they locked in their bean prices well in advance. >> the blackhawks have pulled even with the blues. the go- ahead game is tonight. these games have been unbelievable. the hawks win game 4 wednesday thanks to patrick kane. up 1-0. it's 2-0. they let that get away. one bad stride kids time and space and here he goes. he

around 31-33 and the dan ryan. >>we're following a breaking news story in indonesia. a drunken passenger on a "virgin blue" flight tried to break into the cockpit and caused a hijack scare. it happened on a flight out of the pilot was forced the land the plane in bali. the australian passenger began pounding on the cockpit door before he was handcuffed by the crew. an airline spokesman says there was no hijacking ... only a miscommunication. he was arrested. the rest of the passengers were allowed to get off. they'll be re-booked on other flights. no one was hurt. police are searching for a man who sexually assaulted a woman near a metra train station in the south suburbs. nancy loo is *live in matteson with more. >> police say the suspect could be a serial rapist. the attack happened yesterday just before sunrise along this trail not far from the madison metro station. the victim was on her way to the

station from her home in park forest. the 34 year-old woman helped police come up with the sketch of her attacker who is believed to be in his 20s or 30s. police say the woman was walking to the station around 530 when she was grabbed and sexually assaulted between maine and holman. with the same man is suspected in two separate attacks on tuesday. the joint community alert has many residents on the edge and ready to fight back. >> i'm carrying a bat for protection. i have a daughter and i am concerned about her walking back and forth to school alone. >> police in park forest were already investigating four previous attacks since march in which young women reported being grabbed and battered. the suspect says in those cases, is

terrorists this week in kabul, afghanistan. jerry umanos worked for 25 years at the lawndale christian health center. he died when a guard opened fire on a hospital operated by a faith-based organization. umanos' wife says her husband was living his dream of helping the afghan people by treating children and training other doctors. northwestern football players will vote today on whether they want to form a union. the results of the election may not be known for several months. that's because the national labor relations board is taking up northwestern's appeal on the matter. the university disputes a regional director's ruling that said the players were school employees. chicago will have a new high school named after the president. barack obama college prep high school will be built on scott street, between clybourn and halsted. it's scheduled to open in the fall of 2017. it will be a selective enrollment school, so it'll take good grades, high test scores, and some luck.. to get in. the rancher in nevada who was fighting the federal government is losing some support. it's all over some remarks he made about african americans, but he's not taking those words back. andrew spencer has more.

on race are offensive and i wholeheartedly disagree. one supporter has not been lost is his bodyguard. >> i would take a bullet for that man. >> he says he agrees with the comments about government overreach and he says the farmer is not a racist. >> he treats me with hospitality dislike his own family. >> a federal jury recommends the death penalty for a man from suburban zion, after he was convicted of killing a female sailor in suburban washington, d-c. 25-year old jorge torrez is also charged with the murders of two young girls in zion in 2005. eight-year old laura hobbs and nine-year old krystal tobias were sexaully assaulted and stabbed to death nine years ago. torrez lived in the area back then. four years later, he was found guilty of murdering sailor amanda jean snell. sentencing in the snell murder is set for may-30th. lake county prosecutors say *they want to prosecute torrez, too. indiana dunes officials say mount baldy will remain closed for the summer. last july -- six year old

nathan woessner fell into a hole at mount baldy - with nearly eleven feet of sand collapsed on top of him - burying him for hours. woessner survived the fall. officials say since then -- two additional holes and a number of depressions have appeared in-and-around mount baldy. testing will continue through this summer -- trying to determine what is causing the holes. all other beach areas within indiana's national lakeshore will remain open. the 400-pound wrigley replica cake, made special for yesterday's 100th anniversary of the ballpark, wound up in a field museum dumpster. the cake started the day at wrigley field, then was sent to the field museum for a charity event. most of the cake was made of material that was never edible in the first place. erin did try to have it shipped over here. >> what a waste of good sugar. >> the rest was never served, since it had been out all day. still, the cubs released a statement saying they were 'disappointed' in the museum's decision.

tickets for the ravinia music festival went on sale bright and early yesterday, but many people had trouble getting them at first.. that's because the web-site crashed. ticket buyers reportedly had to wait up to hours to even access the site. but once they did.. festival organizers say tickets went *fast . he festival reportedly sold three times as many tickets by yesterday afternoon than they did on the entire first day of sales last year. a statue honoring the late film critic, roger ebert, was unveiled in champaign... during the 16th annual "ebert-fest" -- a film festival he created. the statue is located in front of the historic virginia theatre... where a young roger ebert would go to watch movies. lip balm is now part of a viral trend. some teens are applying the product beezin to their eyelids say they get a buzz. others are putting birds bees on their eyelids to help them keep awake. it's all natural park. some say it's harmless but some doctors say it could lead to blindness or pink

here are a few stories that are trending online this morning ... talking politics over dinner led to a fight between actor george clooney and hotel magnate steve wynn. wynn says clooney walked out on a dinner with several people in las vegas after an argument over president obama. wynn says clooney was drunk and reacted to his comments about the affordable care act. clooney says wynn insulted the president, so he insulted wynn, and left. clooney says this was more about character, than politics. beyonce has landed the cover

of time magazine's annual 100- most influential people issue. others landing on the list include pope francis, robert redford, and miley cyrus. each entry on the list includes a tribute written by another high-profile person. as warner brothers develops its superman franchise still further, expect to see *this man in the movies. the studio has chosen theater actor ray fisher for the role of "cyborg." comic book fans know cyborg as one of the members of the justice league. he'll make his first movie appearance in the upcoming batman-superman movie. it's still under production in michigan. warner brothers says it plans to expand cyborg's role in future instalments. a snorkeler was rescued off the coast of hawaii's big island, as his own underwater camera recorded the drama. it happened a couple weeks ago. the snorkeler found himself in rough waters, unable to swim back to shore... and running out of energy... when a nearby surfer saw him in trouble. >> 30 seconds more and he would
