putting an american face on opposition. i think it's the right thing to do but i can see why we have been hesitant to do it up till now. >>a high school teacher in far northwest suburban hampshire is under investigation for an inappropriate relationship with a student. no charges have been filed. the teacher is suspected of having a sexual relationship with the student and providing him with test answers. the state's attorney's office says it wants have been issued for the students and teachers all phones. to check text messages. school principal noted by parent of the investigation yesterday. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a man who was critically injured when he was tased by chicago police officers, has been charged. dominique franklin is charged with retail theft and resisting arrest. police say officers chased franklin after he stole vodka from the walgreen's at north

and wells yesterday morning. an officer used a taser, which caused franklin to hit his head on a light pole. he's now in critical, but stable condition. a 76-year-old woman was shot while driving on the southwest side. the woman was stopped at a stop sign at 40th and artesian yesterday evening, when she was hit by a bullet in the shoulder. she drove for about two miles, before calling 9-1-1. the woman was treated and released from the hospital. former state representative keith farnham is now forbidden from using his own patio. the democrat from elgin is awaiting trial for trading child pornography... and he's under home confinement. but farnham's condo and a neighbor's condo share a common area -- the area where farnham's patio is. and the neighbor has a small child. so a federal judge says farnham can't use the patio because it could put the child in danger. a village trustees meeting was met with a protest on police layoffs. that happened in southwest suburban lyons last night where one third of the police force was laid off. lyons now has 16 officers, instead of 23. town officials say the cuts are necessary for budget reasons.

chicago police believe they have solved a 5-year-old murder case. and their suspect made it easier for them to catch him. 47-year-old rene valentin-matos was arrested in minnesota. now he is back in chicago to face trial for raping and murdering 12-year-old jehmeshia conner in 2009. originally, investigators runaway... until her body was found in an alley in englewood two weeks later. but then, in 2011, a woman was raped and murdered in pilsen... and police say d-n-a was found on her body. the same d-n-a was found on jahmeshia's body. now valentin jahmeshia is charged with both murders. for jahmeshia's mother, there is relief and closure. >> i always felt in my heart that someone took her. no one wanted to believe me i was trying to tell my story. >>the suspect and victim may have known each other through church. she was a parishioner, while he did odd jobs for the church. jahmeshia went to church the night she disappeared. a botched murder case that

became known as the "dixmoor five," is being reopened. five men spent 19 years in prison for killing a 14-year- old, until new evidence cleared them all. now sheriff tom dart and the dixmoor police chief are reactivating the cold case. dart says d-n-a evidence points to a new suspect... but at the moment, authorities aren't ready to charge him. cateresa matthews disappeared on her way home from her grandmother's house in 1991. her body turned up in a field near i-57. chicago's red light cameras caught the mayor's own motorcade breaking the law. they've racked up 17 tickets for running red lights and three warnings for speeding since 2012. the mayor says his drivers are being corrected. >> as soon as i saw that and heard the story i said follow the law. nobody's above that slowdown. >>the infractions by emanuel's motorcade were thrown out. city hall officials say those police vehicles don't get tickets when they're responding to an emergency or driving around the mayor. medical records that were

abandoned after the closing of edgewater hospital on chicago's north side have finally been removed from the building, 13 years later. our cameras caught workers wheeling out thousands of confidential patient files yesterday. a bankruptcy judge has ordered those records be destroyed. hospitals in illinois, even ones that are closed, are required by law to preserve medical records for at least ten years as a matter of consumer protection. electric bills for com-ed customers will get bigger starting next month. the utility is raising its electricity rates by 38 percent ... starting june first. the average household bill will increase from 68 dollars a month to 83 dollars. people who have switched to other suppliers will also see an increase. the citizens utility board says the cost of power is up across the board. check out one of the hottest videos on the internet. meet 8-year-old kevin tellez and 6-year-old beberly devers . their fancy salsa footwork caught the world's attention at a salsa congress in israel. the kids get their training at a dance studio in new jersey.

the head of the company that operated the sunken ferry in south korea has been detained. authorities say they believe the ferry sank because it was overloaded with cargo. the president of the ferry company says he committed a grave sin, but he didn't say anything about the cargo. authorities are now trying to revoke the company's licenses. the ferry has been underwater for three weeks now. divers recovered 269-bodies, but 35 others are still missing. 15 crew members, including the captain, were arrested for negligence. police in tampa, florida, say four deaths in a house fire appear to part of a murder suicide. the house belonged to former

tennis pro james blake... and the family had been renting the mansion from him. police found the bodies of tech company executive darrin campbell and his wife and two children. blake wasn't at the house. investigators say the fire was set intentionally, and fireworks were placed throughout the house to accelerate it. president obama visited central arkansas to tour the areas affected by last month's tornadoes and severe storms. he viewed the damage from marine one yesterday, then walked through a hard hit subdivision near little rock. 16 people were killed in arkansas, including a baby. at least 35 people were killed from rural system throughout the south and midwest. president obama declared arkansas a major disaster area, and is providing federal aid to help them recover. security cameras at a church in mississippi were rolling when a tornado from that same system swept over a playground. heavy wind and rain sent debris flying past the camera. only a few pieces of playground equipment were left standing. the church also sustained significant damage. but, its still being used as a place to feed people from the

community who lost their homes. the republican-controlled house voted to hold a former i- r-s official in contempt for refusing to answer questions about the agency's targeting of conservative groups. lois lerner was the head of the i-r-s department accused of giving extra scrutiny to tea party and other groups seeking tax exempt status. lerner took the fifth amendment when she appeared before a house oversight committee last may. republicans argue she waived her fifth amendment rights by first asserting her innocence. wednesday's vote to hold her in contempt fell almost entirely along party lines. the california highway patrol usually gets its man. dogs are another story. traffic came to a standstill on a freeway in sacramento when a stray dog got on the roadway. it evaded officers chasing it and got away again after police used their cruisers to corner it. after about 10 minutes the dog had had enough of the chase and jumped the guard-rail, escaping into a neighborhood.

a 23 year-old first-year teacher has been placed on administrative leave as police investigate her relationship with an 18 year-old student and the allegations go beyond an inappropriate sexual contact. the hampshire school officials have not yet commented publicly on the scandal but a letter went out to staff and parents yesterday to a knowledge that a police investigation is underway. the relationship came to the attention of the principle late last month after a friend of the male student reportedly spotted the teacher in his friends snap chat feet. the state's attorney has since obtained a search warrant for the smart phone of the teacher and student to track calls, photos, text and social media interactions. the warrant reportedly revealed the teacher performed sex acts on the student at least twice in late

2013 but she is also accused of providing him with answers to school tests. the teacher has not yet been charged but a felony count is possible since she was in a position of trust and authority. back to you. >>the american response to the schoolgirl kidnapping in nigeria is taking shape, as the militant group responsible for it unleashes a deadly attack. the militant group boko haram abducted over 270 girls from their school several weeks ago. they say they will sell them into slavery. yesterday militants massacred up to 300 people when they attacked a market and police station. the u-s is now deploying a team of military and civilian advisers to help the nigerian government, that appears to be overwhelmed. an international outcry to find the girls continues to spread. malala yousafzai is among those speaking out for the girls' they are extremists. they don't really understand islam. it's a message of taking knowledge and

in south africa after a one day recess. charged with the murder of his girlfriend he says he shot her accidentally because he thought she was a burglar behind the bathroom door. the defense called a professor to talk about her stomach contents which seems to be a way for the defense to change the time one the prosecution presented. the accused boston marathon bomber argues he should be spared the death penalty. attorneys asked a federal court yesterday to declare the top penalty unconstitutional citing a botched execution last week in oklahoma in which a death row inmate had trouble with the lethal injection and died of a
