available. a fire started inside a kia dealership in burns harbor indiana. the fire started last night from a vehicle that was in for service and spread through the garage. nobody was inside at the time. the fire was contained to the garage, but there is smoke damage in the showroom. three vehicles were also damaged. fire investigators will return this morning to find the exact cause. nine wildfires have forced the evacuation of thousands of homes in southern california. a nuclear power plant, university campus, and parts of a military base were also cleared out. andrew spencer has the latest. >> several more wildfires burned up on wednesday. with the fire burning so close to houses it's no surprise issues of 23 hausen evacuation notices were given out. >> the wind doesn't make it easier. wind can change and it seems like we are safe but that we have to pack up and get out. it's been very stressful. a lot of smoke and they're getting

even larger. >> in oceanside, flames devoured the brush getting close to homes below. firefighters are doing what they can to keep the flames at bay by the least 20 structures have been destroyed. smoke rising from the fire can be seen for miles as the plumes shadow the horizon. because of the fire has not been a discovered. but there were about so many fires in a short period of time. >> we have to leave it up to the investigators. it's too much of a coincidence. >> this rash of fires came early in the season. the temperature hit 93 degrees on wednesday was steady wind to fan the fire and conditions were already tried in southern california >>hines v-a hospital, near maywood, is being investigated, amid claims that some of its performance records, to get bigger bonuses.

nancy loo is live at the hospital with more. >> good morning. federal auditors were here just yesterday and officials with the hospital clave it was just a routine inspection. there are allegations lodged by a local whistle-blower, allegations similar to those against a number of other hospitals across the country. though woman who ran the hospital two years ago is narrow on administrative leave. she left to run the hospital in phoenix which is now under investigation. charges include record of manipulation, secret waiting lists which provideprevented sick veterans m getting care. an alleged scheme to collect bonuses for speedy treatment. while washington deals with the scandal, local

>> the man who once ran chicago's red light camera program, is now facing federal bribery charges. prosecutors say john bills took part in a two-million dollar bribery scheme to steer the city's camera contract to redflex traffic systems. in return, he got cash and a condo in arizona. bills' defense attorney insists, his client never took the money. redflex was ultimately dropped as operator of the red light cameras. police arrested one man and are searching for a second suspect in connection with at least two car jackings and a robbery in the streeterville neighborhood. the attacks happened within blocks of each other over a three day period, starting on saturday. all of the victims were held up at gunpoint, but nobody was injured. charges are pending against the 22-year-old man in custody. you'll see the latest warnings about the mers virus the next time you go to the airport. there are two confirmed cases of mers in the u-s. both are health care workers who arrived from saudi arabia. warning signs about avoiding the virus are now in place at security check points at 22 airports. the recommendations are similar season, like washing your hands and avoiding contact with sick people. mers symptoms include fever

cough, and shortness of breath. there is no vaccine, but the symptoms can be treated. some people in indiana can now send a *text to 9-1-1 for help. emergency dispatchers in 28 counties in indiana began taking text to 9-1-1 calls yesterday. officials say this is a huge advancement for people who are deaf, speaking impaired, or fearful of being heard. but there are some challenges. dispatchers say text messages aren't as fast, and they're also more difficult to track. auto-correct features could be confusing. the goal is to expand the service statewide by the end of the year. illinois' pension reform law will not take effect on june first, as planned. a judge in sangamon county suspended the overhaul until lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of the law can be resolved. unions, retirees and other groups argue that public worker pensions are protected from being diminished or impaired. the law, enacted in december, would reduce retirees' benefits and raise the retirement age to save the state nearly 145 billion dollars ... over 30 years. the state house could vote on a budget today that relies on extending the so-called temporary income tax hike.

the plan has the state spending 38-billion dollars. that's four billion dollars *more than what's coming in *if the temporary income tax is not extended. but the house may vote on the budget before they even vote on how to pay for it all. house speaker michael madigan says there's time to pick up votes for extending the tax hike. if the budget isn't balanced by the end of the month, it may have to wait until after the november elections. mariano's is rolling out another store in chicago ... but some city leaders want to know when grocery stores will come to their areas. bob mariano and mayor emanual announced plans for a mariano's at 39th and king drive in bronzeville. they've have been working to bring new stores into under- served areas of the city. so far, mariano's bought eleven closed dominck's locations. this dominick's store in the fifth ward remains empty. alderman leslie hairston says her community is in desperate need of a full service grocery store. >> i said i will help you anywhere but you have to be

everywhere. >> when they mentioned that this is what they were going to do, it should have been the dominant at 71 and jeffrey. >>the mayor's office says it is working with the aldermen on the task force to find a new grocery store for the south shore neighborhood. and, a mariano's spokesperson said in a statement, it is also looking at growth opportunities. wrigley field has a new look, and we're not talking about those controversial renovations. the iconic red marquee is now green. crews painted the sign green and the trim gold. now the sign looks like when it was first put up in 1934. this is all part of the season long celebration of wrigley's 100-th birthday. the sign will stay this way during the next cubs homestand, which runs from friday to wednesday. after that, the marquee will be re-painted red and white. that seems like a lot of work. >> maybe it will bring some good work. i mean good luck. >> it is helping the economy. rain continues through the

morning. as we get into the portions of today we think there could be a break in the action. we are stuck in a cool and wet pattern. so far as the airport we have a normal amount of rain. we expect to add to that number today. right now this temperatures are in the mid 40's. the radar shows the rain across the western part of the viewing area of the entire region should see some light showers early today. as we continue around the region, a low pressure system will set up overhead and will keep us in this what pattern. up to 53 degrees this afternoon. 70 percent chance of rain for this thursday. tomorrow we are up to 51. sunday we climb up to 65. at the end of the weekend we are dry. >>coming up ... an experimental treatment has *cured a woman of a deadly cancer. we'll tell

turkish government for the coal mine explosion. 282 mine workers were killed after a power distribution unit exploded in the mine. 120-more workers are still trapped inside. one miner says he doubts any of them are alive. an angry mob formed when the prime minister arrived. they blame the ruling party for being too lax when it comes to enforcing safety in the mining industry. inspectors say the air system was insufficient, which pushed the flames and smoke farther into the mine. the captain and three senior crew members of a south korean ferry that capsized last month, killing more than 280 passengers, were indicted for homicide. another eleven crew members were indicted on negligence charges. prosecutors say they left the sinking boat before many of the passengers. most of the victims were children on a school trip. nearly two dozen bodies are still missing. angry protesters shot and killed by gunmen at a protest camp. hours bitter protests stormed the airports compound with the

interim prime minister was meeting with election officials. he was forced to flee the building. the protesters then staged a sit-in. the demanded the ouster of the entire government. >> the mayo clinic may have found a cure for cancer. and this woman, stacy erholtz, may be the first *beneficiary of that cure. last june, erholtz went to the clinic with advanced blood cancer. none of her treatments worked... until doctors injected her with a massive dose of measles vaccine -- enough for ten million people. after just one dose, her cancer completely vanished. so far, she's the only patient to achieve full remission. but researchers say they're encouraged that the experimental treatment could work on others. a couple in iowa says a burger they got from a mcdonald's drive-thru was topped with a surprise ingredient. the man says he found marijuana on the bought the burger for his pregnant fiance. police say they did find drug paraphernalia on an employee at the mcdonald's. a sample of the substance was sent to the division of criminal investigation for analysis.

wildfires forced the evacuation of thousands of homes in southern california. a nuclear power plant, university campus and parts of a military base were also cleared out. there are nine confirmed wildfires in san diego county, where more than 9-thousand acres has burned. the causes of the wildfires have not been determined, but state officials say the drought they are experiencing could make it a dangerous year. crews are also dealing with near record heat and santa ann a winds. a family in central ohio huddled in the basement of an old farm house while a tornado destroyed their farm. just minutes after the dobbins family they went into the basement tuesday night, the tornado rocked the home for 30 seconds. it ripped through the farm, taking with it the barn and silo. more than 5 emergency crews were on standby and at least 20 first responders were there when they escaped. >> we all went in to the seller and we felt the walls shake and the rain came over us and we

the national september 11-th data museum is being dedicated today. the museum is built under the site of the world trade center. survivors and victims' families will get to see it privately before it opens to the public on wednesday. exhibits cover the planning of the attacks and what was left behind after the towers fell. there's also a film about al qaeda that some say doesn't draw a clear enough distinction between practicing muslims and terrorists. a cat runs to the rescue when a dog attacks a boy... and its >> she's a hero. >>four-year-old jeremy triantafilo thinks the world of "tara the cat." the boy was riding his bike outside his house yesterday in bakersfield california. suddenly, a dog lunged at him and bit him. the cat sprang into action, flinging herself at the dog and chasing it away. jeremy's dad, roger, put the video from his security camera online and it went viral. he told us over the phone, the cat got a reward. >> we bought her a personal fish

trending online this morning ... a baby in minnesota who survived an 11-story fall from a high rise apartment building is being called "the miracle baby." the father was in another room when the one-year-old boy fell from the balcony and landed on a small patch of mulch sunday. he suffered a broken spine and ribs, a concussion and a punctured lung. the boy is in critical but stable condition. now people are rallying for better apartment safety precautions for children. the prime suspect in the disappearance of an american teenager, is getting married... in a peruvian prison. joran van der sloot is serving 28 years for killing a woman. he's also suspected of murdering american natalee holloway in aruba. van der sloot struck up a relationship with a woman who visited a fellow inmate at the prison. van der sloot and the woman were allowed to spend time together in his cell. now, they're getting married... and she's already 5 months pregnant. the north korean dictator is now an action hero in a new video game. a company created a game
